Who Was Rabbi Akiva? Israel: The Land and its People with Dr. Abramson

  • Certainly one of the greatest Rabbis of the entire Talmud, Akiva son of Joseph did not begin his study of Judaism before adulthood. His trajectory of incredible spiritual growth was punctuated by moments of great personal tragedy, and his martyrdom at the hands of the Romans after the failed second-century Bar-Kochba revolt has an enduring legacy in Jewish history.

Dr. Abramson, I hope you will continue to include one or two jokes per lecture. I don't think they are distracting at all. "Come for the history, stay for the jokes" I also appreciate the fact that you don't really edit your lectures. This makes those of us who are far away feel like we are seeing a real person, sharing real knowledge. Thanks again for all your work and openness. I'm really enjoying your approach and this aspect of world history.

Dr Abramson is a great scholar and lets the chips fall where they may in regard to Christianity . In one lecture he teaches that the Christians might have been wrongfully thrown of of the Jewish Temple around the year 100 and that many of the disputes between the Jews and Rome were mainly the fault of the Jews.
He is a great Jew because he is a great scholar.

This was the finest lecture I've ever heard you give! Historically correct, Spiritually uplifting and flawlessly executed.
Regarding the "Christians" in Jerusalem during the first revolt, they purportedly fled to the city of Pella in the area of the Decapolis. The Jerusalem church was predominantly Jewish, both ethnically and in practice, except for their belief that Jesus was the Messiah and was raised from the dead. According to The Acts of the Apostles there were Pharisees who belonged to the church in Jerusalem that James the Just, the brother of Jesus, was the leader of.
As always I have been informed, educated and enlightened by your scholarship.

    *Abstract*
This lecture explores the life and teachings of Rabbi Akiva, a prominent figure in Jewish history during the first and second centuries CE. The lecture delves into Rabbi Akiva's personal journey, from his humble beginnings as an unlettered shepherd to his rise as a renowned scholar and spiritual leader. Additionally, the lecture provides historical context by examining the political and religious landscape of Judea during this turbulent period, including the destruction of the Second Temple, the rise of Jewish sectarianism, and the Bar Kokhba revolt. By analyzing Rabbi Akiva's life within this broader historical framework, the lecture offers insights into the development of Rabbinic Judaism and its enduring legacy.
*The Life and Teachings of Rabbi Akiva*
    * 00:00:00: Rabbi Akiva's profound influence on the speaker's understanding of Judaism is acknowledged, setting the stage for a lecture divided into two parts: one focusing on Rabbi Akiva's life and teachings, and the other on the historical context of his era.
    * 00:04:00: The primary sources for understanding Rabbi Akiva's life are explored, including Midrash, Talmud (both Jerusalem and Babylonian), and the Mishnah. The limitations of these sources as historical documents are also discussed, emphasizing their focus on conveying religious and moral truths rather than strict historical accuracy.
    * 00:33:00: Rabbi Akiva's origins in Lod and his early life as an "Am ha'aretz" (unlettered person) are described. His initial animosity towards the Pharisees and his transformative journey to becoming a leading scholar are highlighted, with emphasis on the role of his wife, Rachel, in inspiring him to pursue Torah study.
    * 00:45:00: Rabbi Akiva's influences and teachers are briefly mentioned, including Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Nachum Ish Gamzu, known for his saying "Gam zu l'tovah" (This too is for the good), which resonates with Rabbi Akiva's own outlook.
    * 00:47:30: Rabbi Akiva's spiritual leadership and advocacy for the poor are emphasized, citing examples such as his rulings on leaving portions of the harvest for the less fortunate.
    * 00:49:00: The tragic loss of Rabbi Akiva's 24,000 students, commemorated during the period of Sefirat HaOmer, is discussed, with various explanations for their deaths presented.
    * 00:51:30: Rabbi Akiva's mystical inclinations and his exploration of Kabbalah are explored through the enigmatic story of the "pardes" (orchard) and the profound impact it had on him and his companions.
*Historical Context: Judea in the First and Second Centuries*
    * 00:13:00: The lecture delves into the diverse Jewish sects of the first century, including Sadducees, Pharisees, Essenes, Zealots, Samaritans, and early Christians, highlighting their competing ideologies and the complex religious landscape of the time.
    * 00:24:00: The political backdrop of Roman rule in Judea is explored, starting with the decline of the Herodian dynasty and the increasing Roman encroachment on Jewish autonomy. The impact of emperors like Caligula and Nero on Jewish life is discussed, leading up to the First Roman-Jewish War (66-73 CE) and the destruction of the Second Temple.
    * 00:53:30: The Second Roman-Jewish War (132-136 CE), also known as the Bar Kokhba revolt, is introduced, focusing on the leadership of Simon Bar Kokhba and his messianic aspirations. Rabbi Akiva's support for Bar Kokhba is noted, despite the disagreement of his colleagues.
    * 00:57:30: The tragic aftermath of the Bar Kokhba revolt, including the martyrdom of Rabbi Akiva and other prominent Jewish leaders, is recounted. Rabbi Akiva's final moments and his declaration of the Shema prayer are presented as a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to Judaism.

Well done Professor - Yasher Koach I listened from Melbourne Australia *Down Under!) and enjoyed it immensely.
Quick question: Why didn't you mention the Midrash that when Moshe Rabbenu (Moses ) asked G'd what in the future will Torah study look like.
This shows in part the greatness of R AKiva the teacher, foremost educator:
I think this Midrash goes something like this:
G'd showed Biblical Moses Moshe Rabbenu, a vision of one of Rabbi Akiva's Shuirim (Torah lecturers.) Rabbi Akiva was describing and explaining the crowns on the letters on a Torah scroll. Moshe didn't understand exactly what was being said and felt faint then someone in the lecture asked Rabbi Akiva what was the source of his comments and Rabbi Akiva ansered "its a Halacha given to us by G'd transmitted to Moshe Rabbenu on Mt SInai!" Biblical Moshe was relieved

Acts 15 put converts of the Way bound to kashrut slaughter (and fit foods). Jacob writes that they then on Sabbath will continue to hear more about torah as Moses is read in every city. A sabbath disregard simply never occurred to Rav Shaul nor anyone else in the movement. It remains today outside of the will of HaShem to disregard the sabbath for all converts and believing peoples, so say the Hebrew prophets who speak of the Messianic era's final halachah: Zechariah 8, 14, Isaiah, and more. -- Love your lectures and tune in for them all!

And then his Jewish followers died out and his "chief" disciple Paul, who said to do away with the teachings of the Torah, facilitated the ending any possibility of father-to-son transmission which proves that Jesus was a very unsuccessful teacher and certainly not the messiah. Thank you for your input.

    • @BuckthornStudios
      @BuckthornStudios 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Shalom. I wonder, who gave you the interpretation that Rav Shaul said we are to do away with the torah? The Roman Catholics of Edom? He said no such thing, but the very opposite. Shimon Cephas said: "Shaul is hard to understand, and the unstable and untaught [speaking to the new proselytes from the pagans] twist his words, as they do all the Scriptures [torah], to their own destruction." If I have given Shaul too much generous judgment, I will withdraw any support of him. He claimed to be a proper Pharisee to the end of his days. He said, in court, he was a pharisee and never committed *any* transgression against the traditions of the fathers. Though gossip said otherwise, he was never proven to have done this. It was lashon hara. Christianity still lies about him. Yeshua of Nazareth also said Moses is to be understood and followed, and, not a jot or tittle would pass away from the torah until heaven and earth pass away. Yeshua also commended his disciples to the adjudication of the pharisees, whom he endorsed (when they were upholding correct torah). Christianity lies about Yeshua also, though they have no teachings handed down from him to support it. Let us be sure this tzaddik is rightly judged, without listening to heresay.

    Rav Abramson:
I think it is extremely naive to state that Josephus was "trying to be a historian." Almost all that he wrote praised Rome and criticized his fellow Jews. I think that a much more honest word to describe what this lap dog of the Romans did would be to call him a traitor, who lived to praise his employers, the imperial family of Flavius which adopted him.
Some modern scholars have dismissed him as a reliable source for anything historical. This lecture is one of the most superficial and uncritical presentations of Jewish history that I have ever heard coming from a Jew, and I found it a disappointment.

@23 minutes that photo of “The Last Supper” is an insult and an abomination unto The Most High G-d of YISRAEL whom I worship.. it’s very sad indeed, to see and hear that so many people still think and believe and teach that the “Renaissance” paintings of YaHshua and His disciples are a “true” resemblance or likeness even,of the True Yahudi Messiah.. and His true disciples, of the Early “Church” followers of YaHshua 😢🥺🤥

No Mr. Abramson...people SHOULD indeed read the Gospel. Why not exactly? Because you say so? People can judge for themselves. Here's Yehoshua's aka Yeshua's lineage...
    Matthew 1
    The Genealogy of Jesus Christ
1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3 and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram,[a] 4 and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of David the king.
And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, 7 and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph,[b] 8 and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, 9 and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10 and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos,[c] and Amos the father of Josiah, 11 and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.
12 And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel,[d] and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, 14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, 15 and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.

Btw the Chabads are also called Messianics.
Disciples of Yeshua the Nazarene are still called Netzerim in Hebrew, not Christians nor Messianics but Nazarenes. Shalom

I love Dr. Abramson and his lectures and have learned much from them. However, when it comes to the New Testament his understanding is based on Christian thought which is in itself is faulty and misleading. Yeshua was a Torah observant and Torah teaching rabbi. Basically, Yeshua's disagreement with the Pharisees was over their turning the Torah into a burden for the people instead of the Delight that the Torah is. Sha'ul (aka Paul) said I am a Pharisee not I was a Pharisee. It is erroneous to suggest that Paul was teaching that the gentiles who were coming to Faith in Yeshua has the Messiah we're not to keep the Torah. Just the opposite is true. This can be seen in Acts 15 at the Jerusalem Council where are the Gentiles forgiven a few things to observe to show that they have left the Pagan temples they were then go to the synagogue on Shabbat and learn Moses. The Gentiles were really the scattered sheep or the Lost 10 tribes of Israel.

@@HenryAbramsonPhD Thank you for your reply Dr. Abramson. Looking forward to your lecture! I listen to a couple a day! Also, I hope I didn't cause offense. It's just that Yeshua and Sha'ul are so misunderstood because of 2,000 yrs of erroneous Christian teaching...all of it! There is no such thing as "church" in the NT. It's all about Israel...only! In fact, the Greek word for "church" is kuriakos (NOT ekklesia as 99.9% of Christian Pastors and Theologians will tell you!). Kuriakos is NOT found in ANY Greek manuscript of the NT (and there are thousands). It's just not there. Check a Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words!
Ekklesia IS used in the NT approximately 114x. Interestingly, the LXX uses this same Greek word with similar frequency (98-100x) when translating the Hebrew word "qahal". The LXX was in use for almost 3 centuries so the congregants in the Synagogue would have been very familiar with it's usage. And who did they think it was a reference to? Themselves no doubt! So when the NT (a misnomer) uses it, it refers to the same "called out" people!
Why didn't King James mistranslate the word ekklesia in the Tanach as "church" as he did in the NT!?! Because it would destroy his Replacement Theology! The word "church" effectively creates a false dichotomy:
      OT/Israel/Jews/Law/Bad
      VS
      NT/Gentiles/"Church"/Grace/Good
      This is heretical! Anyway....
Keep up the great work and may HaShem bless all the works of your hands! Shalom Achi!😊

Akiva regarded Bar Kochba as the promised Messiah. He was clearly wrong, a rather fundamental error that led to the Roman diaspora. Doesn’t this erro raise a question about the authority of his teachings? Deuteronomy 18:22.

No Rabbi Akivah was right. Bar kochba could be considered the expected messiah at the time. Turned out he wasn't the outright for sure messiah as we found out
But for any christians reading this how do you know Bar kochba wasn't the messiah? Was it because he didn't fulfill the messianic prophecies in tanach and was captured and killed by the romans? Sound familiar?
