They tried to drive to the paint and simply couldn't, then they were forced to kick it out for ugly contested 3's without much time on the clock. Kyrie and Luka were playing high IQ defense. The mavericks don't need to play flashy defense to be good. They just need to play fundamentally sound high IQ defense.

What they aren’t realizing is that OKC is making 42%3PT in open 3s. The problem is that they are only getting 16 open 3s per game, while they got 23 open 3s per game in the regular season. So this is absolutely the Mavs defense, cuz they are limiting the open looks and contesting as much as they can. Those are harder to make.

As much as the Mavs have displayed great defense, most people of Okc’s missed 3’s are from uncontested, unforced, rhythmic shots. Sometimes the closest defender is 5 feet away. If those shots are made it’s can range from being a Thunder win to a blowout.
@@jeremianderson4861when you are contested on most shots it affects your shot mentally..So you miss open shots too..And most of open shots came from offensive rebound that's been tipped out so it ended up being kinda rushed to avoid close out..Dallas has given up on doubling Shai mostly stay home on perimeter shooters whereas okc has been giving up open 3s to role players

Only thing I disagree with Paul abt is Kyrie.. he doesn’t need to score & he knows it. This whole series, he been setting the tone on defense. We all know Ky can score whenever he wants. That’s not what’s needed to win with the way this current Mavs team is built. Because you have THJ, PJ Washington, & Derrick Jones Jr. who can get buckets as well, and obviously Luka.

Kyrie is playing winning basketball rn. He is being a floor general. Kyrie is trusting his teammates to make shots and they are knocking them down. Pj Washington is becoming a legit 3rd option with the way he is playing. Kyrie is the leader of the mavs and has sacrificed high scoring nights in order to get his guys going and build their chemistry and confidence. They are literally getting better every series💪🏾
