      @AlejandroMangold 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Why do you say that legato is not a way to shredd? It is a technique, and if you master it you can become a shredder, such as with alternate picking.

    • @AlejandroMangold
      @AlejandroMangold 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      yes, I know, besides alternate there is sweep picking, multiple-finger tappin', skip-string picking, etc. But legato is another valid technique just as these other are. And most important: why do you say that shredding implies an aggressive sound? That's another misconception. Shred is to play with speed, virtuosity and technical complexity and skill, no matter if it is smooth or aggressive or in between. If it is aggressive what defines it, then thrash rhythm guitar parts would be shred (that's aggressive for sure).

    • @mariahthompson5223
      @mariahthompson5223 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't know if I agree completely. Michael Romeo of Symphony X does tapping sequences which are magnificent. I guess its probably like a sweep tap that he does, but if its not shredding, then the term really is misused.

All on the same guitar. Tried to get Robin Trower's when he played the Canyon Club in Dallas, but he wouldn't sign it. Just ignored me after his show when I asked him. Eric's tone is far nicer than Petrucci's. Everyone spergs out about JP but his sound now is boring and his fast runs are like a robotic Al Di Meola. JP has gotten stale, Richie Kotzen, Tosin Abasi and Guthrie are superior.

    Yngwie was far more than a shredder. Never mind his speed, his rhythms and his phrasing were incredible as was his TONE. none of that buzzy distortion or gimmicks. Plus he revolutionized rock guitar when he came onto the scene when everyone was trying to copy Eddie Van Halen. Yngwie blew everyone out of the water when he came to the US. Listen to his work on the Alactrazz recordings and even the demo on youtube. My god...I would say he surpassed his own idols.

      Yngwie is a showcase of technique. That's it. That's why he gets boring so quickly. He introduced neoclassical shredding to the guitar playing world but that's all he did. He has no notable songs or artistic output aside from being a technical curiosity.

    • @kingcrimson234

      Way, way higher. If not #1 if we're just talking about shredding. Not only can he play like 5,000,000 notes per second, but all of the notes are well-chosen and 100% clean sounding. And for some reason, this video shows some of the least impressive clips from ALL of these guitarists. It's weird.
      Like they put Buckethead above Petrucci. I mean, I loves me some Buckethead, but he simply can't shred like Petrucci can. This list is supposed to be about the best shredders. And come on now, Michael Angelo Batio above Petrucci for best shredders?? Dude... what?
      And Eddie Van Halen. Come on, he's a good guitar player, but he's not in the top 10 of shredders. Much less #3.
      But seriously, if we're talking pure shredding, JP should have been #1 out of all the guys in this list.

    • @virathiyam5401
      @virathiyam5401 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He can be # 1 if you think about it.

    • @ericdono9218
      @ericdono9218 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely. John Petrucci is the peak of all this shredding thing. It started by Ritchie Blackmore, revolutionized by Eddie Van Halen, pushed by Yngwie Malmsteen, improved by Steve Vai and finally perfected by John Petrucci. Then continued by young guitarists such as Misha Mansoor, Tosin Abasi, and the likes. John Petrucci to prog and metal is like Jimi Hendrix to blues and rock. He's also a riff god and wrote many 7 string and shredding classics giving the big guitar and shredding as a style some musical legitimacy. When 7 string guitars just got popular most other musicians only used it to do the chugging thing or for downtuning convenience. JP wrote symphonies with it! Many other shredders shred the guitar as if it's a violin or a piano. JP shreds and he does it really without having to mimic monophonic instruments.
      So as far as shredding goes, he really is #1!
