    Where was this video when I was preparing to move here 3 months ago? This is great info - I'm sure new residents will love this! We are on a year-round school calendar and it's so much better than a traditional calendar!

      Year round is AWESOME! So much time off throughout the year. People often don't like it because it isn't what they are used to but once you realize you can get so much time off and take vacations AND there are tons of track out camps here for when your kids are out, it's a game changer, IMO.

    Really great video. Thank you! For students whose magnet schools are their neighborhood school, are they part of the magnet program? Or do they do a "normal" curriculum? Do daycares in the area run programs that work like traditional summer programs for year round kids? What do working parents do when their kids are out of school so often?

    • @EllenPitts
      @EllenPitts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great questions!! All the kids in the school do the same curriculum whether they are traditional students or magnet. There is no difference and they’re all in the same classes together.
      There are tons of “track out camps” throughout the year with lots of different variety of options as well. It’s a great program!

    Really good video, Ellen. Can I ask you something? My son will be 5 yo on Oct/22, and I'm not sure if he will be able to start kindergarten at that year or if he needs to wait until 2023. Is there any difference if we chose the year round or the same rule is applied? Thank you very much!

    The all year schedule works for people with 1 child or if you have children that are the same age. If you have multiple children of various ages, when they enter high school, or middle school, that have different schedules, it can be a nightmare. You will NOT be able to go on vacations as the dates, and sports seasons don't work. You have neighbor schools with sports programs that are in complete conflict with the all-year-round schools. Thus, there are sports programs not offered in schools with an all-year-round calendar. They really need to move it back to the normal calendar schedule for all schools so there can be some semblance of normalcy when you have children that differ in age!

      I know so many people who absolutely love the year round schedule. And only a few that dislike it. I think that is one of the good things about Wake County Schools, is that there is choice so if something works well for you, you have access to it. And if not, you can make a different choice.

    I was thinking the same thing about school leadership and then a K-12 education reporter for the News & Observer told me they wouldn’t put much stock in the area superintendent. They’d rather focus more on the individual school. What’s your opinion on which area has the best leadership? Southwestern, Northwestern, Southern, or Western.

      I don't really know. I generally recommend speaking to the principal of the school you are interested in. That can give you the best insight into whether the school will be a good fit. If you would want to work for that person, they will likely be able to hire teachers that you can relate to.

    We are looking to move to the Raleigh area, but the school grades are incredibly low. Without visiting the schools its hard to judge if this is a good way to choose where to move. How much should I trust those schools ranked as a 2. It is odd that the higher end neighborhoods have schools with this ranking. Thanks!

      It can be very confusing... It basically boils down to this: Wake County evenly distributes funding for schools. So they use the same curriculum and the same quality of teachers throughout the district. However, even though the resources across Wake County are evenly distributed (unlike other counties and states) there is still a correlation between poverty and test scores. Maybe poor kids don't speak english as their first language. Maybe there aren't parents at home at night to help with homework. Maybe they can't afford tutors when the child needs it. There are many things that impact test scores. But test scores really aren't the whole picture. I would recommend calling the school principal. If you have a good rapport with the principal, the school will probably be a good fit.
