    isotunes has been pushing their products quite aggressively on every youtuber so it's refreshing to hear an honest opinion. Much appreciated 👍

  • @DuceDesigns
    @DuceDesigns 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    So here's the thing, frequent exposure to anything above 85db is considered likely to cause significant hearing loss over time, I think we all agree on that. These products are designed to reduce sound volumes to keep them below 85db. So why then would any company add an feature that would likely cause you to play music through them at volumes that would take the noise level over 85db? That would entirely defeat the purpose of the ear defender aspect of the product and probably open them up for being sued in a few years time when all of our hearing is shot.

      @RagnBoneBrown  2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      As explained in the video - these volume limiters are not intelligent - they don't know the volume of the audio source. Therefore limiting it creates an issue where it is too quiet. I have plenty of other headphones that don't have this issue, therefore it's the choice of the manufacturer. If they want to play if safe that's fine, but it makes for a product that is useless

    Hi Keith - We’re sorry to hear you weren’t completely satisfied with the LINK 2.0. As a small family owned company, we strive to do things differently than bigger companies - we take customers' feedback to heart and do everything we can to improve. While we understand we can’t satisfy everyone, especially when safety must always be a top priority with our designs - we are continually updating and expanding our product offering based on feedback. We will be passing along your thoughts to our in-house engineer and hope you consider giving our other products a shot in the future.

      @@ISOtunesAudio That's the problem, if you want to buy a pair of Isotunes LINK, they cost £89.99. You get 10% off from a youtube discount code, takes you to £81, at which point the shipping is added back on so you pay £86, making the discount fairly pointless. I feel the shipping should be free regardless for a product in that price range.
      Thanks, I hope you take it on board !

      Get rid of the stupid volume limit function!!! Nobody wants it. We’re all workers and half deaf already. If we can’t get the volume we need then the product is useless and we end up wearing the loudest earbuds we have and damaging our hearing worse.

They simply aren’t loud enough to listen to things clearly, especially podcasts and spoken word which is what I want to listen to mostly when sanding. Thanks for the review. The charging situation would make me think twice about the stihl as I already have enough charging cables in the workshop! Great video as always. 👍

    Thanks for this! With all the hype I was seeing from woodworkers & such, I recently got the ISOtunes Pro 2.0, (their little earbuds) and am very disappointed with them. Sound quality is also lacking and the volume needs to "go to 11". They turn themselves off randomly (oddly, at the end of songs - go figure), and a coworker said the microphone is a 4 out of 10 while quietly in my office. I'll be looking into the Stihl set :)

    I've had the stihl dynamic bt's for four years and thought they were brilliant. The wiring recently started cutting in and out so I purchased the isotunes link 2.0, in my opinion the isotunes are miles better. Interesting video, and I have to agree with you about the ISOtunes defenders... but for different reasons.
    I've had the Link 2.0s for about a year now and I only use them when I absolutely have to because I find them actually painful to wear (I wish I'd returned them when I first bought them). The underside of the headband feels reasonably soft when you push the rubber strips back and forth, but when wearing the defenders the same rubber strips put an incredible amount of force directly downwards onto my head - with no give at all - and I can only wear them for very short periods of time, regardless of how much I try to adjust them. They even leave deep furrows across my scalp. Wearing a woolly hat (or a folded Buff) under the strap makes little difference and only adds about half an hour, if I'm lucky, before I have to take them off for the rest of the day. It's such a shame because otherwise I find them perfectly okay in terms of features and sound quality, although I do only listen to podcasts in the workshop.

    You’ve got to try the new Isotunes air defenders. Night and day from the links for sound. Still quiet to conform with osha but the detail is wild, I’m almost thinking HiFi levels. You wont be bumping in the defenders but you will be immersed, hearing it the way it was recorded. I was very very surprised as I am in full agreement with your review of the links.

    Thanks for sharing! I did look at both of these a while back, but was a bit shocked at the hefty price tag. Even now, the Stihl headphones are just over £100. I tend to listen to Audiobooks when I'm plodding away, so the low volume issue with the IsoTunes would definitely be a dealbreaker.
    I don't consider myself an audiophile, but I've been using JBL noise-cancelling headphones for all but the loudest work - sanding, table saw and the like - where I switch to 3M ear defenders, so would probably not be all that excited about decidedly below average sound quality. 👍

  • @hansangb
    @hansangb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @6:52 I believe the sound is limited by design to protect your hearing. I don't know Isotunes, but I heard that from a number of people and it makes sense. People jack up music to overcome ambient noise, and don't realize it's damaging the hearing. I wouldn't think a limiter design is in play since a recording with low RMS/LUFS/dB still should be able to go up to the limiter, no? Finally, you actually didn't review how well it protects your hearing. I could have missed it, but I don't recall how well it does at protecting your hearing.

    I’ve been looking out for this video since you mentioned it on the podcast - thank you and well done for making an honest review about a product you’ve been gifted! I’ve had the isotunes on my wish list for a while as a supposed “premium” option over cheaper unbranded items, so it’s good to hear this opinion - I won’t be getting the isotunes any longer. A product that fails in one of its two core purposes is not worth any amount of money.
    I do think that marking the isotunes so low for their older (but still “current”) USB connection is maybe a bit harsh. It’s still universal and most people are never far away from a micro-USB cable. I think I’ll wait and see if Stihl release a new version with USB charging though, as a proprietary connector like that would score 1/10 for me, as I don’t want to be searching around for a specific charging lead - in the meantime I’ll just keep using my in-ear wireless earphones under standard ear defenders!

    The IsoTunes Link 2.0 seem really odd, I'm hoping it's an issue with your pair. I've got the original versions and although the audio quality isn't amazing it's ok. I'd say it's only slightly worse than my Sennheiser PX100-II. As for volume, I've never really struggled with it, I've always been able to easily hear anything I'm listening to (pod casts, audio books, radio 2 etc.) even when cutting steel using my chop saw or using my DW745 table saw or angle grinder etc.. From the isotunes website they say the "SafeMax" limit is the same so I can only guess yours have a problem with them? Hopefully this gets isotunes to sort out either an inherent problem with the 2.0 version or improve their quality control a little :) (Oh and thanks for the video, it's always good to see others experience with this type of product)

    I bought 2 different pairs of iso tunes products, the free’s and the extra 2.0’s after they’d been “recommended” on two well known TH-camrs, turned tv personalities….. both version were uncomfortable, too short a battery life, but most importantly too quiet for listening through, and completely useless as hearing protection…. Having perceived for several weeks in 2020 having contacted isotunes direct they recommended that I used them with “quieter tools” ( that was their official response!)
    I would give them “straight back”, or possibly “not the time of day in future” if I could even be bothered to make a review video of them.

    Having used my 3M worktunes every day for 2 years, they're giving up the ghost with the same problem everyone else reports (left ear cutting out due to unsubstantial connecting wire) I bought the equivalent priced 'Prohear' off Amazon and started the returns process a few seconds into trying them out - absolutely awful sound quality and very quiet (as well as feeling awfully cheap) The controls look similar to the ISOtunes so I wonder if the guts of the products come from the same factory? So I'll definitely count out the ISOtunes - what's the point in the product if it fails at one of it's primary functions. I wonder if anyone with any audio experience actually designs these products - or maybe folks have become too used to listening to music through phone or laptop speakers?
    I'm considering the Stihl's but I'm now wondering whether the 3M worktunes are actually very good compared to the rest - The sound and volume is pretty good (I listen to lots of classical music in the workshop which hasn't been heavily compressed or normalised - so the fact that I can enjoy a string quartet whilst running some heavy industrial equipment and extraction is actually quite impressive) I also like the fact they only have one button to control it with - it means you're not fumbling around trying to find the correct button if answering a phone call. Who even needs volume control on a headset itself - seems like a pointless function. Even if the 3M does only have a lifespan of 2 years, this averages out at pence per working day to own and run. Worth it if you actually enjoy music whilst working.

    i use the isotunes aware. i don’t have any issues with quality, durability & battery lasts well. i’m unsure how you can make an assessment between 2 products when you’ve only had one for 2 weeks and used it once versus a product you’ve used for hours for months. maybe the issue is you don’t like isotunes due to the sound quality that you perceive to be lousy & this has tainted your view?

    I've had the 3M worktunes for around two years now. I was very happy with them up till recently when I started losing audio in the left muff. I opened them up to see if there was a loose connection on the left hand side. All looked good which is strange because when I wiggle the wire that goes in the left muff around the audio comes and goes. There's no damage evident on the exposed part of the cable either. I'm looking at buying myself a new set, but what one's to buy, 🤔🤔

    Can the earphones be detached from the headhand on these?
    Wanting to use on brushcutter/forestry helmet for work so have face protection.
    I know stihl do an adapter for my style of helmet but seem to be for the version thats got the mount already. These are the cheaper ones than the helmet versions and i would still need the adapter bit anyhow! 🤣🤣 so wondering if can actually get away with these instead!

    I've had the 3M bluetooth connect for almost 2 years, I absolutely love them but the cables are damaged and I'm pretty sure soon enough they won't work anymore :( I don't know why but here in europe they're like 100€+, I bought them on the US amazon site and it was 60€ with all fees included at the time. I'm bummed about the cables because I love them. They work really well, the battery life is insane, they are comfortable in hot and cold weather, they would be pretty much perfect if it wasn't for those damn exposed cables :(

It's been like that for a few months and still works fine but I'm pretty sure they're not going to last me 5 years unfortunately. I don't feel like I've abused it either, it's always on a stand if it's not on my head. IMO if you are going to offer a comparison review on two product you should have taken the time to at least try out the communication quality on both models rather than just the one. I have the ISOTunes Link Aware and find them to be very good with regards to volume, hearing protection, but most of all, the ability to hear speech and anything else in that sort of noise range without taking the ear defenders off. The music sound is also very good, but at the end of the day, they are for hearing protection and not high end cans. I use them when I'm using my planer and thicknesser, and when I'm strimming and on the mower and don't find these to have any issues with not hearing the music.
