Bought a 2014 RT-S SE6 a few months ago and after 3,300 miles I am still loving it like the first time I fired it up. Just a fantastic road trip machine. Took it on the Dragon twice and it took the corners at speed like a champ.
Neato!!! I currently own a Yamaha Strat (09') S model with 4200 miles and have been thinking about an R/T as I'm disabled. What interest me most is stability, especially when your'e at a stop + having a reverse gear for backing (which is difficult now with an 850lb bike). I appreciate your technical expertise and honesty of this video!
Cool Docdaugh ! You should take a Spyder for a spin and see what you think. They sure are fun, and the stability (along with reverse) is a major bonus! Those XV19's are awesome bikes, but can be a hand full in slow tight spots due to their weight... Thanks for watching and commenting!
I like the way you could go over those rail road tracks, at 4:44, without slowing down or swerving to hit them at 90 degrees. I have always had to approach tracks with caution on two wheels.
Lol, yeah, you don't have those concerns on the Spyder. However, you do need to careful not to pick up bad habits when switching back and forth between 2 and 3 wheels... I'm a heavy front brake user on two wheels, and can scare myself once in a while when grabbing for the missing front lever on the Spyder... Lol Thanks for watching and commenting Scott9084!
Thanks for the video Shawn , not ridden since i was 17 and fearless ,but im 61 now ,so i think its a spyder auto for me . Riding here in the UK is not like the US but i will move over to Spain in the winter months and there is a little more room over there. Pete
Excellent video, really enjoyed this ride. Even the wife wants to get on one! I an Currently on two wheels and she swears blind that she will not get on the back. Nice to see that the "larger vehicle owners" have the same shortcomings in other countries. Just as bad here in Australia. Many thanks for sharing this, cheers Andy
It's great to see how many couples start to ride together once again, or even for the first time with the purchase of a Spyder. My wife somehow lost her nerve to ride a motorcycle. She simply can't shake the feeling of being uncomfortable with the balancing at low speeds. She works in the parts side of the business and knows how spendy a simple drop can be. The Spyder has opened up a whole new world for her! LOL on the "shortcomings"...! Thanks for watching and for the awesome comment!
Nice and informative videos Shawn. Keep them coming. I have just purchased a Spyder RT Limited and am looking forward to chalking up the miles on it. I also purchased the BRP shop manual because I like to do my own maintenance on it. Also like those running boards - may look into a set for mine!
Still on the fence on the spyder's , must test ride one for further comments, which in your opinion ( doesn't have to be long) 2 wheel in front or 2 wheel in back ? Maybe if you test ride again ,vlog difference between trike and spyder.
You really should at least test ride one. Though that almost makes it more confusing because they really are fun, and you can't tell for sure why. I've ridden plenty three wheelers with the wheels in the back and I've wholeheartedly disliked them. They pitch back & forth and have a very unsafe feeling to them. From the moment you drive across the parking lot, the Spyder has a totally different feeling. They are stable and smooth. You never have an unstable or unsafe feeling, and you can bomb into corners. They have all the VSS of a modern automobile, and will get you back on track should you do something crazy. Thanks for watching and commenting Mike!
It comes in two transmission packages. An SE6 that's semi-automatic and a SM6 that's a manual with a clutch and shifter just like a motorcycle. Thanks for watching and commenting!
The 2014's range from $14.9K up to $30.5K MSRP. There are three body & chassis types and different versions of each. Here is a link that will let you see them all: can-am.brp.com/spyder/ My favorite is the RS-S with the manual clutch: can-am.brp.com/spyder/spyder/spyder-rs/spyder-rs-s.html Thanks for watching and commenting Marty!
i just made a test drive with a new one and i almost lost control of it on the freeway trying to change lane... at about 60 mph... geez you better keep your legs very tight on the tank when youre doing fast movements with this thing specially if you want to keep your butt on the seat but in any event, the ride was cool.....my friend loved it!!!! im gonna buy an rt-s white 2015...... i cant go very fast because im not used to it not like mr. up there in the video reving in the 5-6-and up!!! very cool sound the 1340 cc has..... ride safe cost 27500 can$.... :-)
I have been a owner for 4years, Patrick, dont fight the steering, just make flowing lane changes, dont try and turn to short, it will come right, good luck mate.
I don't know anything about can ams, but typically you get that sudden clutch engagement feel as you roll on from a DSG box (or I mean technically it can be a single plate, but point being is no torque converter). I thought they had the rotaxes which run centrifugal clutches but I mean shit, you can bolt anything up to it. Looks like a solid upgrade from 2013's.
The new 1330 motor has done away with the centrifugal clutch, it's now hydraulically controlled. Has a very positive engagement. No more slipping along till the 3,500 rpm full engagement is reached and burning up clutches when not shifted correctly or hauling big trailers... The engine is still made by Rotax, which is owned by BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products), the maker of Can-Am, Evinrude, Sea-Doo and Ski-Doo products. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hi Kenneth, these 1330 ACE RT's pretty much came out of the gate trouble free. There were a couple campaigns early on, like an Ignition Switch inspection (may not allow you to open seat or front cargo) and a couple firmware updates, but no real problems. You can run the VIN for any open campaigns on BRP's site can-am.brp.com/spyder/ by scrolling to the bottom of the page. The second service is recommended at 9,300 miles, so you may check to see if that's been done... Other than that, turn the key on, push start and have a ball..! Lol Thanks for watching and commenting!
i am more concerns about the changes they made to the engine just as moving the master cylinder back, adding some more fans and improving the censers to prevent the over heating issues they had in the earlier models
They have been testing this Spyder for more than three years, and was actually going to be released in 2013, but they felt they didn't have enough long term (extreme mileage) tests to be 110% sure everything was perfect. The master cylinder hasn't moved, the new engine configuration has moved from it. The 2013 RT's were using the 2014's frame in advance, as they pulled installing the 1330 ACE in the 2013's at the last minute as noted above. The radiators/fans were moved for two reasons, the original location of the radiator no longer exists due to inline triple, and to greatly improve rider comfort during low speed riding. Don't be fooled by all the hype over the 2013's overheating! They did run hotter than previous years due to new 2013 emissions that BRP had to conform to. Out of the mass quantities of 2013's we sold (#1 dealer last 2 years), only two riders were truly unhappy with the heat. With the preventative heat shields and the ECM reflash that the EPA finally approved, everyone is happy! Please be open minded on what you read, hear and believe... I work closely with BRP tech guys and see all this 1st hand from what's really going on! The problem we fear now is that the customer's are so happy with their 2013's they may not want to switch to the awesome new 2014's! Time will tell once the season really kicks in for us. But the sales have been fantastic for the 2014's so far, so that's a good sign. Thanks for watching the video and taking the time to comment 101southsideboy !
Would you recommend these for a beggining female rider? I really am impressed with the Can AM Spyder, especially the RS-S. Any feedback is grateful, thanks in advance.
I want this 2014 model so bad but i have heard such bad reviews on the internet...i was hoping they took care of some of the issues on the 2014 model..I have a 2011 ninja1000 and a 2014 bmw c650gt scooter..i love the scooter because it handles like a sports bike, adjustable windshield ,storage and i can put my feet forward like a crusier...I was wondering how fast is the RT from 0-60 , the top end speed and how it handles at speeds 80+, i would to replace this with the bmw scooter but it handles great in the wind and it can keep up with 600cc sports bikes with no problem after i installed 28gram weights..DO you have any information on the 0-60 and top end? RT only
They are a lot of fun! You really should try one, you'll be surprised how fun and different they are. The Spyder owners are attracted to them like Harley owners are to their bikes... Thanks for watching and commenting sir!
I almost think the guy was trying to mud me down... I was closer to him than the camera depicts. Got a mist of muddy water from it. You can never predict what crazy people will do! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Shawn, is it possible for you to take a test ride on this Spyder with your wife on back, showing how easy it is to get on & off & how she likes the ride? Maybe that'll help sell my wife on the idea. If the company or your wife isn't up for it I'd understand. Take care, love your test rides of all these bikes. P.S. Do you guys ever get in bikes with sidecars? If so I'd love to see that.
I would be happy to record that for you Robert. I'll be driving this Spyder quite a bit, so I'll get a chance to do this soon. Sure would be nice for you and the Mrs to get out for some rides! We very seldom see bikes with side cars anymore... Thanks for the kind words Robert! I'll try to get you a video soon.
I hear ya Ak! My wife says that we should be able to shoot them with those suction cup darts with an "Idiot" flag hanging off... Once you get three flags, You're Out!" lol It was a perfect day for a ride. Now it's 18°F with a few inches of snow... Crazy weather!
Looks like it hauls. Bookmarked the link so I can look through the 2014 line up. Can't wait until my wife heals up so we can go test ride one. It looks like a blast to ride. I think he probably didn't like you pulling out on him & he was just being an ASS. Or he wanted to get your pretty white bike muddy. Definately an ASS
I hope she heals soon too! I'm looking forward to your reaction after riding one. Make sure you record it if possible. I overreacted verbally when I pulled out, but quickly realized I had a turn lane, or medium to pull into, and I let him go buy. But I'm thinking that may have set the guy off... Thanks Robert!
See how people (Cagers) are, for no reason what so ever some boneheads want to mess with the biker. Pure jealousy/envy. You handled that with grace Shawn.
1984bornagain Not ALL Cagers are boneheads. I've ridden thousands of miles on bicycles, quite a bit on dirt bikes, and a little bit on road bikes. While I'm currently only driving cars, I love the Can Am RT and hope to get one soon. I've seen sooo many street bikers ride like "boneheads," though rarely on touring-type bikes. Overly aggressive (sometimes offensive) riding, sometimes risking others on the road seems to be shared by bikes and cars/trucks. Visit the "cruise" of most cities on a weekend night and the ratio begins to shift towards the bikes being at fault. At least thats been my experience. That said, I have great sympathy for two and three wheelers and know that the majority are safe and decent riders. Shawn, I loved the video and really appreciate you taking the time to post it.
Knuckle head is right.. Guy in the 4x4 must be upset cause he can't get the chance to take his deesell off road.. I really hate those.. Anyhow the can am is nice, not my style though.. Will have to test ride one one day for shts n giggles.. It sure is pretty though.. Just hard for me to go beyond 2 wheels, but the concept is great
Damn white 4x4 man! These Spyders are definitely a different bread... They are fun in their own special way, but not a 2 wheeler replacement for sure. Thanks for watching and commenting dbest1a!
They are for sure hard to put a finger on... It even gets more confusing when you ride on, as they are so different than anything out there. If I had endless income, I would have one for sure, just because they are so different. The one thing I'm not a huge fan about is they draw a crowd every time you stop somewhere... I kinda like to fly under the radar. Thanks for watching and commenting Kevin!
looks like the best spot for a spyder reply ----- well I have made the plunge shawn , watching you have all the fun , was not good enough { hahhaha , bought a used 2012 r-t spyder , 5,000 miles on her , haven`t seen any thing around with the low miles and price , and this one popped up... will have too change my i.d. photo now ! looking forward too a super fall ride with the wife !
Naw, man... You need to give one a ride, you'll be surprised how fun they are! There's no age groups or stereotypes with Spyders, as outsider's seem to think... That's the biggest joke when you get around a group of Spyder riders. They mostly all still have their sport bikes or cruisers also... The kids, and kid-at-heart's get into some crazy customizations and high performance mods on these things. They are a ton of fun and growing faster than any bike segment in history. Thanks for watching Dave!

Shawn Smoak Ah, I see, wow, that is pretty high up, though I guess y eah, it def. makes things a bit easier when loaded.
What's the difference with the Standard and the Limited, looking to get an RT soon.
Does riding get boring after a long distance trip?
Any videos on wiring harness ?
hey Shawn, I am considering buying a "14 spyder rt-s limited with 9,000+ miles on it. Anything I should look out for with problems?

No heat issues at all. I can ride in the summer, in shorts, and not feel any radiant heat. That was fixed for the 2014 model.
Where is this ?
Would you recommend these for a beggining female rider? I really am impressed with the Can AM Spyder, especially the RS-S. Any feedback is grateful, thanks in advance.
How much do the cost ...
The 2014's MSRP range from $14,899 up to $30,499 USD...
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Shawn Smoak Just got a price to buy one in New Zealand $48.590.00 That's crazy ....Looks like I wont be getting one :-(
Good lord that's high! Sorry man...!
What's the price range
Is it auto or like a regular bike?
This one is the 6 speed semi-auto version...

Is it a 50cc

Nice ride despite the dirt bag in the truck. Looks like that Spyder was a blast to ride. One of these days I will have to take one for a test ride.
They are a lot of fun! You really should try one, you'll be surprised how fun and different they are. The Spyder owners are attracted to them like Harley owners are to their bikes... Thanks for watching and commenting sir!
Very comprehensive experience. Thank you!
Shame that dirtbag in the pickup tried to spoil your day. I applaud your composure!!
Thank you very much briotone ! You are too kind!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
HOW MUCH does that one cost?
Hi Robert, in the states they range from $22,499 to 30,499 msrp for the RT model...
Thanks for watching and commenting!
is this one automatic
Shawn
Do you take phone calls?
i shared at my blog.
That guy in the white truck was driving like a fool, people in a hurry to go nowhere, but thanks for the test ride
I almost think the guy was trying to mud me down... I was closer to him than the camera depicts. Got a mist of muddy water from it. You can never predict what crazy people will do!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
That idiot had to blow smoke in your face too!!!!! The turn radius is crazy. Now I really want one and may get one.
Shawn, is it possible for you to take a test ride on this Spyder with your wife on back, showing how easy it is to get on & off & how she likes the ride? Maybe that'll help sell my wife on the idea. For long distances i would say yes to it, but otherwise i think a regular bike feels more "natural" i suppose
I agree! But there is something so different about them, I can't help but have an attraction to them...
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Very Nice Snowmobile.....I mean ..Wheelmobile!!!
Looked like a perfect day to cruise. I hate A-Holes that drive like that, especially if they've got a poor dog in the back.
I hear ya Ak! My wife says that we should be able to shoot them with those suction cup darts with an "Idiot" flag hanging off... Once you get three flags, You're Out!" lol
It was a perfect day for a ride. Now it's 18°F with a few inches of snow... Crazy weather!

I overreacted verbally when I pulled out, but quickly realized I had a turn lane, or medium to pull into, and I let him go buy. But I'm thinking that may have set the guy off...
Thanks Robert!
Shawn Smoak Well sometimes those guys with BIG trucks are overcompensating for the lack of something else in their lives & are just A holes
lmao... I'm sure that you're right there Robert.
Changing seats on a spyder

The kids, and kid-at-heart's get into some crazy customizations and high performance mods on these things. They are a ton of fun and growing faster than any bike segment in history.
Thanks for watching Dave!
