@BrockMcGoff I thought you might like that quote. Great on ya' mate for this video. Cheers from Oregon! I had that quote for a bit on the footer of my email. Jung had lots of wisdom he wrote.
You made some great points! When I turned 30 a few years ago, I felt a lot more sure of myself and confident, so nice to hear that continues when you hit 40! I would add spend more time with close relatives and ask them questions about their upbringing, their stories, their life, learn from others who have even more lived experience. Thanks for sharing! And happy birthday!
I am turning 42 and these are all solid advice. Getting off social media is the best thing that I did when I turned 40 (I am only on TH-cam). Thanks for sharing your wisdom brother.
I think TH-cam is different, although they're really pushing short form videos, which is a bit alarming. But I think there's a massive difference between finding a 15-10 minute video and choosing to watch it (TH-cam, TV, podcast) vs. letting something like TikTok autoplay 7 second clips for you.
Been a subscriber for over 12 years now, here from PH🇵🇭, now turning 29... thanks to all the simplicity and authenticity of your videos... advance happy birthday🎉 "Maligayang kaarawan"👏🎉 as we say in Filipino
Useful advice as a 27 year old who's hit a crossroads and wants a change. I am fortunate to have a safety net and can live with my parents and ive even got a good job who have allowed me to take a few months off to take a break and figure out what I wanna do next... have lots of half baked ideas, few strong motivations, but I'm a busy bee who wants to do something fun and good for the world, couldn't care less about money, I'm sure I'll figure it out.
I feel the exact same. Life took a turn for me during COVID and I moved back in with my parents and switched careers to become a teacher. However, to Brock's first point over the last few years I found that teaching just took too much energy out of me. So I've since been thinking about what else I could do that's good for the world, but nothing has grabbed me. Since I've saved up money I've decided that at the end of this year I'm just going to hit the road and see what happens. I'm about to turn 30 and feel like I don't have any direction at the moment, but I am trying to make the most of not being tied down. I find that it helps to know that others are feeling the same thing, so just know that there are many of us that are still trying to figure it out as well and that you are not alone
Happy belated birthday Brock! Thank you for your videos for the last few years. I found you in high school when I lost my grandfather and have been a viewer since. You always have a way of making life make sense. Thank you my friend!
Others have probably mentioned this already but audiobooks are also pretty soothing whenever you don't feel like reading a physical book although I do still enjoy both options. I'm in my middle 30's so I appreciate the video Brock.
I'm really liking this wave of Brock videos. I'm 26 and now that I'm on my new health insurance, I'm really honing in on how I spend my time, money, and energy.
Thank you brother. I am 34 and i have dealt with schizophrenia for a long time. It was caused by my marijuana addiction. now after being sober for 7 years and seeing life from a different prospective i feel the same. Feels l like a big brother is talking to me about his experience and i know this gonna help me a lot. Truly practical and life changing video for me
Adding to "dont finish a book you dont like" if you bought it and feel bad about getting rid of it, look for Free Little Library in your neighborhood to pass it on and think of it as donating a gift to someone else.
Wishing you a very happy birthday, Brock. I found your channel a couple years ago when you still went by The Modest Man. You taught me how to dress and develop my personal style (one of the first things that got me started was the minimal white sneaker), and all through such an easygoing process that was full of encouragement, but devoid of any pressure. I absolutely appreciate how this channel is evolving with your audience as I often found myself pondering many of the things on your list as of late. There are so many platforms in this day and age that there are channels telling you to buy expensive things while others tell you to save every penny--there's no shortage of confusion in this world and I always come back to this channel to regain my sense of balance. So thank you for teaching me as much as you did, be it style, confidence, life lessons, or something else. It would be awesome to meet you in person one day, but in the meantime, all the best :)
Thank you so much for the kind words! This is really encouraging as I think about which direction to take this channel. Helping people regain a sense of balance very much resonates with me!
You've given me lots of new perspectives on how I want to better myself since I turned 30! I have no doubt you're going to rock your 40's! Happy birthday, Brock!
Great words of wisdom Brock! I live by a lot of this advice and you are soo right about if you don't live the traditional lifestyle that people give you grief about it. One of the biggest bits of advice I need to work on this year is to just worry about myself and my well being. Just want to enjoy things while i'm still around.
Keep this up Brock. I like these new kinds of videos. I find myself watching way less “style”videos compared to years ago, as I already have my personal style down. I love it when a channel grows with the person, and myself. If that makes sense
I am a decade older than you. Even from my perspective, with my additional 11 years of life experience, all your advice is on point. Some even made me reflect and realize how accurate they were.
Ordered a custom pair of Dark Olive Green Chelsea boots after the video that you made. Your experiences & videos DO influence real life decisions so… Thanks.
Let me begin by saying what a truly eye-opening and informative video it was. I must agree with about 95% of the recommendations you suggest. I will be retiring from my secular employment this May 2025 for 5 years. I just turned 70 on January 1st, and since my retirement, I have had the opportunity to do and explore many of the things you have spoken about. In fact, a close friend of mine invited me to travel to Las Vegas and it was my very first time there, it was a different experience, I have also traveled outside of the United States, and recently visited New York City it was a solo trip and quite an interesting time and I just started taking classes as a senior citizen at a local community college, which means my classes are free and I have gotten back into my passion of calligraphy and writing with fountains pens...it is said 40 is the new 20, I'm not sure I exactly know what that means, however as you age and gain more knowledge you will not fear getting more mature but rather come to appreciate your own personal life experiences greatly. Thanks for sharing.
I'm 37 and there are some things I'm grieving about, like the fact that I still don't have a spouse or family, but I've been able to achieve more financial independence over these past 7 years as well as become more useful to others. Even though I have not been focusing on working out enough for several months now, I'm still a lot more physically capable than some people I know who are several years younger. So, those are some wins.
I hear you. I’ll be 37 in a few months. I don’t have a spouse. I don’t have children. I’m not grieving over it though. I believe I don’t have those things because I don’t want them as much as I think I do.
34 myself, but still don't have a partner nor a sense of financial freedom. Still just toiling away at relatively low salary positions. Only problem now is, I'm dealing with a genetic autoimmune condition and cervical instability. My advice to people under 30... Start prioritizing your health. You can't do sht if you're not healthy. You don't want to end up tired and unable to impose your will on things when you still have so much ahead to do.
Happy birthday, Brock! 🎉 I'll be 29 this year God willing and it's always interesting to hear the learnings from older people. 8:03 "Nothing happens after midnight" - Sometimes it does haha A few weeks ago my cousin and I were singing to songs we heard growing up and reminiscing about the people haha 10:18 I don't know if you've read the Stoics but this is something Marcus Aurelius reminds himself about - "You always own the option of having no opinion. There is never any need to get worked up or to trouble your soul about things you can't control. These things are not asking to be judged by you. Leave them alone." Even 2000 years ago there was so much to have an opinion about apparently 😄 Saying "I don't know" is indeed liberating.
Gracias por estos consejos, tengo 22 años y veo tus videos hace poco más de un lustro. Tu contenido me ha ayudado a mejorar, cuidarme más y salir de una mala época. Feliz casi 40 cumpleaños :D
I am 38 and this past decade has been the most purposefully lived period of my life. Here are my tips: 1) Read books that will change your life (Health, Finance, Psychology) and implement them right away 2) Keep a Journal (Write down lessons you learned, the good and the bad) 3) Exercise like your life depends on it (I went from working out 3x to 6x a week and now I am in the best shape of my life) 4) Stop worrying about investing in the right stocks and start worrying about investing in the right people and moments (family, life milestones, memories). 5) Take a lot of pictures and videos of your kids if you have them. When you're older, those captured memories are like injections of happiness worth more than gold.
I like the greys too! I see things like hair dye, make up (or any grooming) sort of like clothes: it's just an option you can play with when you feel like it. I'm not trying to fool anyone into thinking I'm younger.
I'm not sure why it seems like we reason very much alike. I can relate with most of what was written. With the way the world is currently, it's quite difficult to get 'modest' content online. All we have now is flash and extravagance. Living for the now..
I stopped saying i'm sorry because Blake Lively told Anna Kendrick stop apologizing it's a fd up female habit in the movie A simple favor, and also because they say that sometimes it's better to say thanks than to say sorry. Maybe it depends on the situation and if you did something wrong you should definitely apologize.
Thanks! Just keep trying different styles until you find a couple you love. Don't be afraid of hairloss treatment (if you're losing it). Find a good barber/stylist and stick with them so they get to know your hair. Tip them well!
About number 19...Of course everybody is free to not vote, but they should keep in mind that people have fought and died to be allowed to vote. And there are still people in the world who are fighting for that right. Don't ever take anything for granted
To be fair, I didn't tell anyone not to vote. I vote. But I also wouldn't judge or shame someone who doesn't. In fact, I'd rather someone NOT vote if they don't have time (or won't take the time) to actually form opinions on who to vote for. I don't think people who vote are morally superior, especially since so many are ill-informed or simply voting along party lines.
I agree with almost everything with you've said in this video excepting for the not voting part and there's a very obvious reason to that and if you're still oblivious to that fact, well you do deserve to be shamed.
Great video, but I do have to respectfully disagree with you on the not participating in politics part. As someone who comes from a country who has lost its right to freedom of speech (UK), please Americans never take your rights for granted. There are MASSIVE problems in my country which if you are not careful will get you a criminal record for pointing them out. It is your duty as a citizen of one of the most free countries in the world to protect that freedom from radicals (on both the left and right) who would take them away from you and your future generations. Putting fingers in your ears and ignoring reality is how my country reached this pretty dire point. All your other points I completely agree with though!!!
Some really good stuff here, but a few things i find hard to understand: Dude video games are absolutely great, but everything in moderation. I agree hundreds of matches of League of Legends is a waste, but God of War Ragnarok, Tears of the Kingdom, etc. They are excellent and great adventures. Lack of political involvement is good but still we should all have a basic responsibility to know the candidates we vote for every 4 years and commit to that. Countries with highly Involved democracies tend to resolve society issues better. Lastly, i dont necessarily disagree with the travel advice, but i think almost every American should absolutely leave the country at least once or twice and see and explore countries that speak different languages and challenge you. Understanding more about the world provides a lot more value and enjoyment in life.
I agree with all of that. And my gaming critique is mostly aimed at the repetitive online (addictive) games that are so popular these days. I have no problem with playing through a game like TotK, or even playing some multiplayer with friends. But you have to be aware of the additive nature of it, and I think it's only appropriate if you're checking the boxes in other areas of life (fitness, family, work), which most people who game a lot are not. I agree that it's a good idea to do enough research and cast your vote every 2 years, and for local ballot initiatives. I don't think everyone should vote, tough. Like if you're not willing to do any research, you don't deserve an opinion (IMO), and I'm okay with that kind of person not using their vote. Traveling abroad is great, although not available for everyone. I think the USA has so much to see, and you can really expand your horizons by seeing the different people and cultures in your own country. But yes, seeing more of the world can be a powerful experience, if you can swing it. Thanks for sharing!
Don't agree with your take on "Being Informed". I believe it's everyone's civic duty to put in some effort to understand what's going on around them and to participate in shaping the society they live in (and that includes voting). Sure, today's media landscape makes it really hard to make sense of things because there's so much noise. But burying your head in the sand *is* neglecting your civic responsibility. And even on an individual level, it's only a strategy that works if you're privileged enough to not have to worry about politics ever affecting you. You don't have to pay attention to everything, sure. But you should put in some effort, and hone your skill of sorting the signal from the noise. Your life and stability is built on the past efforts of others who have participated and shaped society for the better. Don't take it for granted.
I only said that you don't have to (and shouldn't feel pressure to) be informed about *everything* going on in the world. And if you do want to "be informed" and form an opinion, you need to earn it. As you said, that takes time and effort, so you have to choose a limited number of things to really care and be informed about. I do vote, and I participate in local efforts (e.g., neighborhood association, local elections, etc.). But I'd never judge someone for not doing those things.
@@BrockMcGoff You do mention "everything" in your video, but the example you chose of "try telling someone you didn't vote" gives the impression that you don't have to care about even your own nation's politics. While I don't necessarily think making people feel guilty about not participating is the solution, I do think we should try, collectively, to make civic engagement more of the norm. Kudos for voting and participating in local efforts. Wish more people did that.
Carl Jung said, “Life really does begin at forty. Up until then, you are just doing research”.
Love that!
@BrockMcGoff I thought you might like that quote. Great on ya' mate for this video. Cheers from Oregon! I had that quote for a bit on the footer of my email. Jung had lots of wisdom he wrote.
Man, this may have been my favorite video of yours to date. Been doing a lot of reflecting since turning 30 in Dec and this was great to hear
I'm glad to hear that, thanks for watching!

Well said, Brock. This video is much, even desperately needed, and I’m 23 years ahead of you in life. And - happy birthday!
Fantastic video, Brock. Probably your best! Pre Happy Birthday and thank you again for your content.
Thanks, Will!
Happy Birthday, Brock! And thanks again for the really helpful video 🙏🏼

No matter how you style it, your hair is always fire!
I’m about to turn 40 this November, and I agree with about 90% of the things you mentioned here. And that’s okay! Great video, thanks for sharing.
Nice, enjoy the last bit of your 30s!
"Apologizing is not about admitting guilt." Needed to hear this one!
I'm really liking this wave of Brock videos. I'm 26 and now that I'm on my new health insurance, I'm really honing in on how I spend my time, money, and energy.
I'm glad it's resonating, I like making this sort of content!

Good call!
Wishing you a very happy birthday, Brock. I found your channel a couple years ago when you still went by The Modest Man. Very thought-provoking for me as I turn 30 this year. Subbed!
Welcome to your 30s!
You've given me lots of new perspectives on how I want to better myself since I turned 30! I have no doubt you're going to rock your 40's! Happy birthday, Brock!
Great list, Brock.. and happy birthday.
Love these. Your vids are filled with a peaceful sense of wisdom I appreciate. Happy early birthday!! 🥳🥳
As a man of 42, I can confirm many of the items on your list, Brock. I also appreciated your TLC reference. Stay stylish!
Thanks! Glad someone caught that haha
Thank you, Brock. Happy 40th!
Great video, Happy Birthday! And yes buy the watch or watches :)
42 year old man here. Great advice!
That's great to hear!
Ordered a custom pair of Dark Olive Green Chelsea boots after the video that you made.
Your experiences & videos DO influence real life decisions so… Thanks.
Nice, hope you like them!
Wow the first couple of the list so great and I am writing it down. I feel energetic.
I just turned 29 so this video came at the perfect time! Thank you!
Happy upcoming Birthday, mate. This one is probably the most value packed into 19 minutes I've seen yet
Thank you!
This video was very well done.
Thank you!
Had a real shitty day today and your video helped me calm down a bit. Keep grinding 💪🏻
So glad to hear that!
I felt great at 30, but my first year in my 40’s was hard. Feeling better at almost 41, though. Hopefully it’ll keep getting better
Glad things are getting better!
HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY!!!!
Happy 70th, that's a big milestone! Sounds like you're doing retirement the right way. Very cool!
I turn 30 in a few weeks, excited to watch this
Thank you so much, it was perfect timing to learn your wisdoms, thank you for everything and happy birthday!
Great video, thank you - I sent it to my 2 daughters.
👏 👏 👏 👏 amen! You don’t need to have an opinion on everything! Also, even if we do, we don’t need to share it. 10/10 Brock, hit the nail on the head!
Thank you, Bandrew!
I'm 37 and there are some things I'm grieving about, like the fact that I still don't have a spouse or family, but I've been able to achieve more financial independence over these past 7 years as well as become more useful to others. Sounds like you’re doing well
34 myself, but still don't have a partner nor a sense of financial freedom.
Amazing video. You are correct about most of it, my friend. Happy birthday.
Thank you!
Happy Birthday, almost to 50 and still a good list
Happy birthday, Brock! 🎉
I'll be 29 this year God willing and it's always interesting to hear the learnings from older people.
8:03 "Nothing happens after midnight" - Sometimes it does haha A few weeks ago my cousin and I were singing to songs we heard growing up and reminiscing about the people haha
10:18 I don't know if you've read the Stoics but this is something Marcus Aurelius reminds himself about - "You always own the option of having no opinion. There is never any need to get worked up or to trouble your soul about things you can't control. These things are not asking to be judged by you. Leave them alone." Even 2000 years ago there was so much to have an opinion about apparently 😄 Saying "I don't know" is indeed liberating.
That's a great quote, thanks for sharing!
Okay, sometimes fun things happen after midnight, usually with family or old friends.
38 here, this is a great list!
I like how "Go Deep" came right before "Having Kids"
Great video man. Happy Birthday.
i should try these, better than nothing, really good video, hopefully i listen and act now. cheers
damn. I feel called out . Thanks Brock. This is one of your best.
Hit 20 a couple months ago, some did hit me. Will keep them in mind❤
Nice, enjoy your 20s, they're a special time!
Gracias por estos consejos, tengo 22 años y veo tus videos hace poco más de un lustro. Tu contenido me ha ayudado a mejorar, cuidarme más y salir de una mala época.
Feliz casi 40 cumpleaños :D
Regarding apologies, I'm Canadian, we apologize about EVERYTHING.
Just hit 25 and it feels terrifying - thank you for this video, Brock!
You're SO young haha, enjoy the second half of your 20s!
I agree with the walk part. I’m in Minnesota, so walking when it’s -10 degrees outside is hard. I try it, but sucks.
Nice video but I would recommend getting educated/informed and voting. Look at what we're loving through right this minute.
This was a very helpful video.
Appreciate the thought that was put into it
Thanks for watching!
Great insights. Looking forward to the video when you get to 50 :)
I’ll be 51 this year and enjoy this channel immensely. The best piece of advice here: go walk 😬
I am 38 and this past decade has been the most purposefully lived period of my life.
Here are my tips:
1) Read books that will change your life (Health, Finance, Psychology) and implement them right away
2) Keep a Journal (Write down lessons you learned, the good and the bad)
3) Exercise like your life depends on it (I went from working out 3x to 6x a week and now I am in the best shape of my life)
4) Stop worrying about investing in the right stocks and start worrying about investing in the right people and moments (family, life milestones, memories).
5) Take a lot of pictures and videos of your kids if you have them. When you're older, those captured memories are like injections of happiness worth more than gold.
Solid advice!
Embrace your age by not dying your hair. Loved the silver fox look.
I like the greys too! I see things like hair dye, make up (or any grooming) sort of like clothes: it's just an option you can play with when you feel like it. I'm not trying to fool anyone into thinking I'm younger.
This bro is the best. Lakes and rivers that you are used to...LOL But all solid advices.
Great content Brock. Thanks. 17 rings a bell 😉
Happy Birthday...Love the TLC - Waterfalls song reference
Went to college for music… still paying for it 15 years later…
Thank you for your wise words. :)
Another awesome video! Where do you get your overshirts?
This one is from Ash & Erie (link in description)!
I really liked this video!
I turned 40 a couple of weeks ago. It's nice to see we are both 1985's kids. Happy birthday!
Happy birthday to you too!
Happy birthday ❤
Thank you!
This was very instructive
Completely agree on the "wasted a lot of 20's" feeling. Youth is wasted on the young.

I'm not sure why it seems like we reason very much alike. I can relate with most of what was written. With the way the world is currently, it's quite difficult to get 'modest' content online. All we have now is flash and extravagance. Living for the now..
Happy Birthday daddy

You have great hair! Any tipps for the younglings?
Thanks! Just keep trying different styles until you find a couple you love. Don't be afraid of hairloss treatment (if you're losing it). Find a good barber/stylist and stick with them so they get to know your hair. Tip them well!
In McGoff I trust
Very Good!
You look good and dress well for a 40 year old 👍
Thank you sir!
I just turned 41
Happy birthday!

"Nothing good happens after midnight" is a depressing outlook. If that's true hang out with cooler people!
So...it's cool to stay up late?
About number 19...Of course everybody is free to not vote, but they should keep in mind that people have fought and died to be allowed to vote. And there are still people in the world who are fighting for that right. Don't ever take anything for granted
Agreed. Thank you.
Very good points, Thanks for sharing 😊.
Highly recommend 4000 weeks by Oliver burkeman !!
12:33 I thought the dancing uncle was only famous in india 😂
I agree with almost everything with you've said in this video excepting for the not voting part and there's a very obvious reason to that and if you're still oblivious to that fact, well you do deserve to be shamed.
I didn’t say not to vote.
I mean my entire life I’ve been hearing 40 is liberating and confident. But if you are in the sex industry like me. Kiss your work goodbye 😂
you look gorgeous tho!!!!
Fvck those ageist bastards
15:51 i disagree with this. i can't swim at all
Some really good stuff here, but a few things i find hard to understand:
Dude video games are absolutely great, but everything in moderation.
Bald is beautiful! Embrace it!
"I do think we should try, collectively, to make civic engagement more of the norm." I can definitely agree on that!
