I basically agree with all your main points. Luckily, the 5th season is supposed to be the last one, so there's no more time for the missteps you pointed out or the many filler plotlines that mucked up season 4. So I hold out hope they stick the landing. And, yes, I would like a follow-up - spoilerific - video that further elaborates on the thoughts expressed here. At least if/when you are ever in the mood.
I agree with your observation that “Presentation Becomes The Identity, losing the content in the process” which compounds flaws further as seen where you highlight interesting twists and character developments are mangled with underwhelming tropes and cliches as well as being bogged down by non engaging dialogue. Hopefully season 5 will lean into the shows stronger elements. Excellent Essay as always! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
They knew they were getting a final 5th season so they did a season long "Empire Strikes Back" where everyone is at their lowest point and the adversary is about to win. They didn't need to spend 8 episodes to go down that slope but alas, that's what happened.
They dragged on the season with B plots that got nowhere. Yes, the last episode was awesome and we are in end game now, but does that really excuse how the previous episodes were as you described? You've perfectly encapsulated my feelings and qualms with this video. All the characters were inconsistent, too, expect the deep, or should I say... THE PEAK.
I am not as familiar with Kripke’s record - it’s the first show of his that I’ve watched, but what is happening with The Boys reminds me so much of what happened with The Preacher - another adaptation of Garth Ennis’s comics. In its later season it devolved into a parody of itself. The common denominators are the original material creator and Evan Goldberg plus Seth Rogen as producers. I wonder how of producer’s influence could this be.
I initially saw homelander as a representation of the US as a whole and I saw the show as a critique of capitalism, corporatism and militarism. But then they sort of made him a caricature of trump and focused only on far right evils vs good liberals which I think is far less interesting. I feel like the satire had potential to be much stronger but they exchanged that for shock value and low level garbage commentary. it's not even commentary at this point, it's just a direct copy of real events
The show is way to preachy, smug & shallow tropes which makes the writing almost seem like it was written by Reddit. You can tell the showrunner places personal ego above storytelling.

Can't believe this doesn't have more views
