As a rabid watcher of the show, I've seen far worse than RJ, but I genuinely think Johnathan here isn't serious. You can kinda tell that he constantly contradicts himself in his own arguments and it seems like he tries to seem dumb on purpose.

Re: the topic at 49 mins in I've said before that if I raised my son to believe that fairies were real, and convinced him that sneezes were a reaction to (and evidence for) pixie dust from these invisible fae, every time he or someone around him sneezed it would further cement his belief in the supernatural entities that we have no real reason to think exist. When I was a believer I thought I was going to heaven and I believed in heaven and hell. One of the biggest teachings in every church I attended was beware of having a false salvation. I forgot the verse but it talks about there being many people in hell that cried lord lord. It left you questioning your salvation so you would constantly pray for forgiveness because you were in fear that you fooled yourself and you are going to hell. Getting out of religion I saw it is a huge mind fuck. I don't fear being dead now but I do have fears of suffering bad enough to wish I was dead.
Fear is the biggest tool used for indoctrination, hence hell, hence the first thing they go to when you tell them you don't believe is Pascal wager "what if you're wrong". Fear short cirquits logic and is imbedded into the teachings so whenever you are thinking of any religious subject your logic does not interfere, so you don't logically examine what it is that you are believing in. It's honestly a rather moot question - "where" we originated. Evolution doesn't actually suddenly pop new specie onto the picture to toddle off and populate their niche. You'll see that camels originated in North America then crossed into Asia about 3 million years ago, spawning new varieties all along the way. Things evolve as they inhabit new environments. Hominids and hominins certainly did originate in many instances around the Rift Valley in Africa, but they evolved globally. When we look at our DNA, we see at least four other specie of human in our ancestry. That didn't happen in Africa. When we interbred with Neanderthal, it most likely was in Europe or east Asia. When we interbred with Denisovans, it was most certainly east Asia in the high mountains - those are some of the genes they passed to us. We have at least one and probably many more "ghost" specie in our genes that we came into contact with - outside of Africa. If camels, lions, bears, sloths, etc all had global distributions, there's no reason hominids didn't follow the same distribution patterns. Everything we see around us all took the very same amount of time to evolve as did we. Moeritheriums originated somewhere between Africa and southern Europe but then evolved into the myriad specie of sea cows, pigs, manatees, elephants, mastadons, mammoths and on and on - each of them originating in a different place. When you look at the stream of evolution as they are beginning to understand it, you see that origin of any specie is a really fuzzy and hazy concept. Everything has been evolving continuously into what we see around us today.

Mr. Q I’m still learning but I know other animals have ‘vestigial’ limbs or organs, whales and snakes have vestigial pelvic spurs which are remnants of legs found on each side of the cloaca. Whales and dolphins also have evolutionary remnants from their land walking ancestors. I’m not sure about our appendix as a vestigial organ, I read somewhere recently that our bones being less dense since we reverted to farming from our hunter/gatherer lifestyle, I’m not sure how or if tribes like the Hadza have been affected or not. Our wisdom teeth may have been more beneficial for chewing plant tissue at one time. The human coccyx or tailbone is the remnant of a tail. Hopefully someone can clarify. RJ and his fellow creationists drive me crazy. He should explain why in the hell the creator made the whale pectoral fin with the same bone structure as the human hand??? Actually about the death bed of a loved one subject, I never officially came out to my grandad, but he found some things of mine (a copy of American atheist magazine in my car). What he said to me was that he wished I'd just been honest from the start. That cut me. I thought I was protecting him by not telling him. So, Seth, no, I'd stay genuine and open in that situation. I'd have an honest conversation with them about where I stood. I feel like they'd appreciate that more than a hollow gesture.

Mary's story and outlook on life is really inspiring and I'm so glad she called in with this episode. When I was a god-fearin' catholic when I was a kid, I was terrified of death. I mean, sure, everyone is averse to dying because it means not being able to possibly do more cool shit in life. But I remember one night laying there in bed, crying myself to sleep, because I started thinking about how some day I would die and have to face that god/Jesus character and very possibly (or very likely) be judged negatively and cast into hellfire for eternal torture for something I didn't even know I did. That boogeyman in the sky was like a nightmare to think about. Thankfully I started thinking for myself and rid myself of religion by the age of 15 (the catholic adults in my life weren't too happy about that), and now in these days of middle age I'm not afraid of death at all. Afraid of the process, sure, because there's the potential of suffering a terrible death with agony in a hospital bed or something; I'm hoping to either go in my sleep or in an instant from a massive heart attack or something. But the thought of being dead doesn't bother me. Some worry about an afterlife or lack thereof. I look at it this way: either there will be some kind of continued existence for my consciousness, in which case cool because the universe would be my oyster to explore and endless adventures would await, or my consciousness will slip away into nonexistence and I wouldn't mind because I wouldn't have any existence in order to lament my lack of existence in utter nothingness, and I'm fine with that.

I want their very last states of mind before nonexistence to be gratifying. Our forbears put us to bed with fictional reassuring stories, so let us return the favor as we finally put them to bed. Mary, I hope you read this. My dad passed of cancer 2 years ago and he had a similar outlook to yours up until the very end. I wish every day that I could talk to him again, to say thank you for everything he did for me, to get his advice, to talk about his beautiful grandchildren... but being an atheist myself I doubt that will happen. His strength facing death was truly inspiring, as is yours. If each of us accepted that this is the only life we have and that we should cherish it and appreciate our world and all the people around us, we'd have a heaven right here. For the record, Matt was describing biological concepts - DNA, evolution etc. From my perspective as a biologist he got everything right. (Just a small remark for the fact deniers out there). I've seen microevolution in the lab myself. Evolution is as close to a fact as any non-provable concept gets.

When I was in Seminary, one of the students opened his room for veneration of holy relics that he had collected. I met this guy, an orthodox christian priest at the time, who was friends with at the time my room mate. One day they walked in with a old half rotten piece of wood, a bag of 2" metal crosses in chains with a hollow in the back, and a candle. They proceeded to tear splinters from the wood and with molten wax fix the splinters in the hollow of the crosses. Guess what they were going to claim the splinter of wood came from. I heard the that priest is some big shot in the orthodox church now, he must have made a nice bit of $$ for the church with his scams.

I sorta doubt that Jessica will ever read this, but if somehow it happens, or if someone in a similar situation reads this, I just want you to know that I was your kid when I was a kid, and as I grew up I started to see through my grandmother's (and my dad and stepmom's) crap. Especially in the modern world, christianity in a lot of instances really does require a sort of self sustained bubble around a child (especially once they become a teenager, and have to choose between the magic book and getting laid) to make sure they stay in the faith, otherwise a secular middle school and high school paired with not going to church on the weekends, paired with the absolute lack of evidence really tends to decimate these silly notions. I would also note that when I was a teenager, it was me trying to read the bible in order to understand it better so that I could try to convert my mother that led to me realizing how silly it all was, and ended in my atheism. Do anthropologists have problems reconciling an African human origin with the development of language and culture in the Middle East? Not at all....

When I was a believer I thought I was going to heaven and I believed in heaven and hell. One of the biggest teachings in every church I attended was beware of having a false salvation. I forgot the verse but it talks about there being many people in hell that cried lord lord. It left you questioning your salvation so you would constantly pray for forgiveness because you were in fear that you fooled yourself and you are going to hell. Getting out of religion I saw it is a huge mind fuck. I don't fear being dead now but I do have fears of suffering bad enough to wish I was dead.
Fear is the biggest tool used for indoctrination, hence hell, hence the first thing they go to when you tell them you don't believe is Pascal wager "what if you're wrong". Fear short cirquits logic and is imbedded into the teachings so whenever you are thinking of any religious subject your logic does not interfere, so you don't logically examine what it is that you are believing in. You just accept it.

It's honestly a rather moot question - "where" we originated. Evolution doesn't actually suddenly pop new specie onto the picture to toddle off and populate their niche. You'll see that camels originated in North America then crossed into Asia about 3 million years ago, spawning new varieties all along the way. Things evolve as they inhabit new environments. Hominids and hominins certainly did originate in many instances around the Rift Valley in Africa, but they evolved globally. When we look at our DNA, we see at least four other specie of human in our ancestry. That didn't happen in Africa. When we interbred with Neanderthal, it most likely was in Europe or east Asia. When we interbred with Denisovans, it was most certainly east Asia in the high mountains - those are some of the genes they passed to us. We have at least one and probably many more "ghost" specie in our genes that we came into contact with - outside of Africa. If camels, lions, bears, sloths, etc all had global distributions, there's no reason hominids didn't follow the same distribution patterns. Everything we see around us all took the very same amount of time to evolve as did we. Moeritheriums originated somewhere between Africa and southern Europe but then evolved into the myriad specie of sea cows, pigs, manatees, elephants, mastadons, mammoths and on and on - each of them originating in a different place. When you look at the stream of evolution as they are beginning to understand it, you see that origin of any specie is a really fuzzy and hazy concept. Everything has been evolving continuously into what we see around us today.

Mr. Q I’m still learning but I know other animals have ‘vestigial’ limbs or organs, whales and snakes have vestigial pelvic spurs which are remnants of legs found on each side of the cloaca. Whales and dolphins also have evolutionary remnants from their land walking ancestors. I’m not sure about our appendix as a vestigial organ, I read somewhere recently that our bones being less dense since we reverted to farming from our hunter/gatherer lifestyle, I’m not sure how or if tribes like the Hadza have been affected or not. Our wisdom teeth may have been more beneficial for chewing plant tissue at one time. The human coccyx or tailbone is the remnant of a tail. Hopefully someone can clarify. Edit; I didn’t see Daniels second comment when I wrote this. Aron Ra makes some good videos, there may be some more info on his channel.
RJ and his fellow creationists drive me crazy. He should explain why in the hell the creator made the whale pectoral fin with the same bone structure as the human hand??? How stupid of a creator to add all of those irrelevant bones for a fin that flaps back and forth vs a human hand that can play violin, etc? You could liken it to a young architect giving blueprints for a building to his boss with a bunch of extra steel, concrete, etc being used in one area of building for no reason whatsoever.

Actually about the death bed of a loved one subject, I never officially came out to my grandad, but he found some things of mine (a copy of American atheist magazine in my car). What he said to me was that he wished I'd just been honest from the start. That cut me. I thought I was protecting him by not telling him. So, Seth, no, I'd stay genuine and open in that situation. I'd have an honest conversation with them about where I stood. I feel like they'd appreciate that more than a hollow gesture.

Read Mark Twain's Innocents Abroad, which includes a trip to the Holy Land, where the pilgrims took plenty of souvenirs. It's amazing there is a rock still standing there. If there had been a cross standing, pieces would be in the parlors of a thousand American God botherers long before today.

The beginning of civilization did NOT first happen in the Levant either, Matt. It took place somewhere in subsaharan Africa, then worked its way northward.
I think the current prevailing theory is that civilization began in multiple parts of the world around roughly the same time, usually around large river systems like the Nile, Tigris and Euphrates, the Indus Valley, the Yellow River and the Mesoamerican region. There was no single Cradle of Civilization, in that case.

Yes he is, but he sounds like he is 16 years old or so. Not sure why they think it was a prank, he was respectful, I think he was just too young and been indoctrinated without having been exposed to counter arguments. This might get him to think more on the subject, but they should not have treated him as if he was an adult.

Mary's story and outlook on life is really inspiring and I'm so glad she called in with this episode. When I was a god-fearin' catholic when I was a kid, I was terrified of death. I mean, sure, everyone is averse to dying because it means not being able to possibly do more cool shit in life. But I remember one night laying there in bed, crying myself to sleep, because I started thinking about how some day I would die and have to face that god/Jesus character and very possibly (or very likely) be judged negatively and cast into hellfire for eternal torture for something I didn't even know I did. That boogeyman in the sky was like a nightmare to think about. Thankfully I started thinking for myself and rid myself of religion by the age of 15 (the catholic adults in my life weren't too happy about that), and now in these days of middle age I'm not afraid of death at all. Afraid of the process, sure, because there's the potential of suffering a terrible death with agony in a hospital bed or something; I'm hoping to either go in my sleep or in an instant from a massive heart attack or something. But the thought of being dead doesn't bother me. Some worry about an afterlife or lack thereof. I look at it this way: either there will be some kind of continued existence for my consciousness, in which case cool because the universe would be my oyster to explore and endless adventures would await, or my consciousness will slip away into nonexistence and I wouldn't mind because I wouldn't have any existence in order to lament my lack of existence in utter nothingness, and I'm fine with that.

I want their very last states of mind before nonexistence to be gratifying. Our forbears put us to bed with fictional reassuring stories, so let us return the favor as we finally put them to bed. I think we can help euthanize religion by helping our irredeemably indoctrinated elders pass away. With the emergence of each more secular generation, the previous will fade into extinction, taking their treasured faiths with them. We can compassionately make this cultural evolution more gentle, subtle, and less jarring.
Mary, I hope you read this. My dad passed of cancer 2 years ago and he had a similar outlook to yours up until the very end. I wish every day that I could talk to him again, to say thank you for everything he did for me, to get his advice, to talk about his beautiful grandchildren... but being an atheist myself I doubt that will happen. His strength facing death was truly inspiring, as is yours. If each of us accepted that this is the only life we have and that we should cherish it and appreciate our world and all the people around us, we'd have a heaven right here. I can't say it to him any more so instead, through tears, I'll tell you - thank you.

For the record, Matt was describing biological concepts - DNA, evolution etc. From my perspective as a biologist he got everything right. (Just a small remark for the fact deniers out there).
I've seen microevolution in the lab myself. Evolution is as close to a fact as any non-provable concept gets.

When I was in Seminary, one of the students opened his room for veneration of holy relics that he had collected. He had a piece of the original cross (although the white wood and rounded ends looked more like a pop cycle stick), the rubber shower shoes Jesus wore when he walked on the water, the pencil Moses used to write the Pentateuch, and the apple core from the Garden of Eden. AMAZING!!!!

I met this guy, an orthodox christian priest at the time, who was friends with at the time my room mate. One day they walked in with a old half rotten piece of wood, a bag of 2" metal crosses in chains with a hollow in the back, and a candle. They proceeded to tear splinters from the wood and with molten wax fix the splinters in the hollow of the crosses. Guess what they were going to claim the splinter of wood came from. I heard the that priest is some big shot in the orthodox church now, he must have made a nice bit of $$ for the church with his scams.

I sorta doubt that Jessica will ever read this, but if somehow it happens, or if someone in a similar situation reads this, I just want you to know that I was your kid when I was a kid, and as I grew up I started to see through my grandmother's (and my dad and stepmom's) crap. Especially in the modern world, christianity in a lot of instances really does require a sort of self sustained bubble around a child (especially once they become a teenager, and have to choose between the magic book and getting laid) to make sure they stay in the faith, otherwise a secular middle school and high school paired with not going to church on the weekends, paired with the absolute lack of evidence really tends to decimate these silly notions. I would also note that when I was a teenager, it was me trying to read the bible in order to understand it better so that I could try to convert my mother that led to me realizing how silly it all was, and ended in my atheism. So in the end, it all worked out.

I commend Seth and Matt for their patience and kindness in the way they speak with so many simple minded, gullible people. It's fascinating to observe god/religion believers when they are confronted with sincere questions about their assumptions. I personally am uninterested in dealing with them myself. Life's too short.
