With ammo availability & pricing being what is is for 6.5g I’ve been pulling FMJ’s from my Wolf ammo and replacing them with 123 gr ELD. Accuracy and feeding has been fine so far.
Hard to beat the 123g Hornady SST on deer. You’ll want to keep the impact velocity over 1,900 f/s so about 400 yards is where a guy can reasonably limit shots to.
Not a fan of the plastic ballistic tipped ammo. I prefer the federal fusion soft point over the hornady black. My experience with the black is dead deer but not many exit the body at 200 yards.
IF you reload try the Nosler 120 grain BT over a near max charge of CFE 223 powder. This combo works good for me. The Hornady stuff is hard to beat in factory ammo and shoots good in both of my guns. Great shooting and enjoy your Grendel. One bad thing about owning a Grendel is you will start shooting it more and more and your other rifles less and less.
My daughter's loves Hornady 123 gr sst ammo. My rifle absolutely loves Alexander Arms 129 gr SST. It also likes the Alexander Arms 95 gr vmax. I'll have to check the new build after I get it finished.
Man, that Ruger sure likes the Hornady stuff. I was hoping to see the Wolf steel case shoot another group like the .8 group when sighting in. But even at 1.45, it's pretty good for cheap steel case ammo.
Based on your awesome results it’s definitely time I build a 6.5 Grendel upper. I just ordered a barrel. The fact that a 6.5 Grendel upper will snap right into an AR lower like 300 Blackout is really sweet. All of these amazing calibers are murdering my credit card! I think the Wolf is pretty decent for how much it costs. It just seems to be inconsistent in the calibers I’ve seen.
my dad and I sighted in his grendel wit wolf, we had a group that was touching at 100 yards. pretty decent. of course we got it at $.80 a round :( so I'd hope it would be decent
Id love to see who tee take these hornaday rounds out to far ranges..im excited about that and super happy to see a actually good video of the 6 5 grendel veing shot at long range.
It's probably been said already, but I think you need at 5 shots in your group to really find which ammo is better. If ammo supply wasn't such an issue I would suggest 3 groups of 5 rounds each to really see any difference in accuracy. It does look like your gun likes 123 gr rounds just fine though. The eld m looks like you can shoot it just like it is using max point blank ranging.
For the 1000 yard shots you need to find some of the federal GMM 130 gr. I have shot many deer with 6.5 Grendel and the SST do the best ... the ELD-m seem to not hold together as good.
Are you saying your hunting with Eld Match round ammo on deer? They are not designed to expand and are specifically for match shooting to give you the best accuracy from your rifle. The Hornady Precision Hunter ELD-X is a very accurate Hunting bullet and will perform very well on deer sized game.
Thank you for this video. Really nice comparison. In my “regular” hunting rifles, I find those SST’s are devastating on game. I will try them in my grendel AR for hog hunting.
My gun loves the Black as well. I think you need to shoot a "dirt round" when you change bullet types. First one is always in a different spot then the other 2 tighten up.
@@pliofcho4237 The Hornady ELD match the Hornady Black, and the Wolf Fmj are not deer hunting rounds as you may know, they do not expand to ethically kill any species of deer or antelope in the field. Coyote's and other vermin might be acceptable game to shoot.

Shot mine @ 900 yards with Hornady black 123gr eld-m and so impressed with their performance. My handloads using 123 eld-m out to 1120 yards. Amazing bullets.
That's a very nice rig there! I'd use the SST's for deer hunting. Shot a pronghorn in Colorado about 6 years ago with them in an AR I put together in 6.8 spc II. About 100 yards facing me. He dropped like a rock and I found the core of the bullet between the rear quarters.

In my opinion, all are good for hunting whitetails. Every hunter has their preference. And who are we to judge one another! Go with what you're comfortable with. Happy Trails!
I really like the Federal Fusion in 6.5 Grendel. However, they are darn hard to find. I reload the Sierra Pro Hunter in 120 grain with great results on whitetails and hogs. Thanks for sharing Who Tee Who!!
awesome video was looking at getting my 11yr old his first center fire as thinking 223 but I have to say this 6.5 Grendel might be a better option for hunting hogs
6.5 Grendel looks like it would be amazing to shoot through an AR, good energy out to 500 yards and able to deal with larger game than 5.56 while still having low recoil and 1 MOA accuracy. But the bullets are a little expensive.
It's still relatively easy to find, just not in bulk. I have a Diamondback DB15 chambered in 6.5 grendel and I absolutely love it. Great rifle shooting a great round.
Here it is 10/17/2024, and I have loaded and tested a few 100g HP's. Only fire 3 at one center. Tow were on ea. other and the third was out a little at 100 yds. I loaded with the Sierra bullets. I am about to lock center's in with the 123 HP. That H-123 ELD is also center.
Have you tried out Underwood Controlled Chaos? I’ve struggled to find a good 6.5 Grendel round that doesn’t over penetration at close range (under 100yrds).
The best factory ammo I've tried in my match-barreled AR-15 was the Hornady ELD-M. My hand-loaded rounds with the Barnes 100 grain TTSX and Stabill powder are not only super accurate (sub 1/2 inch 5 rounds) but also work very well on critters. I had sub-par results with the Hornady SSTs and the Federal 130 grain GMM factory loads.
I would love to see five or ten shot groups to really show consistency. I've really wanted a Grendel for a while. I've got an American Predator in 243 and absolutely love it. Thanks for putting out great videos.
I missed 3 deer back to back with the sst in my ballistic advantage 20" upper. Went back to the black 123 eld and have taken 7 deer the last 2 years. All neck shots. I've heard too many hunters say they loose deer going for heart because it pokes holes well. The last deer I took was at alittle over 300 yards. Neck shots drop them in their tracks. Love my 6.5 Grendel. You'll have to come up 39.81 moa at 1000 so hope you hit

As good as you think the Grendel is it's even better in an AR. It's looks like your rifle uses AR mags. I've had great luck with Elander mags myself. The 24 round mags have been reliable.

It's pretty much all I load but have shot plenty of the others. have had success with the hornady 120gr also. the wolf likes shorter barrels judging from my 2 rifles. The other cool thing is it'll have almost the same trajectory as 308 so you can use the same dope and be in a few inches out yonder. the heavy 223 75gr-79gr should also share that trajectory but I haven't proven that for myself but Primary Arms says it does.

I bought this exact rifle but got a lemon. Mine wouldn't shoot under 1.5" with anything even after using all the tricks like barrel lapping, bedding work, trigger job. Before lapping 2" was the best group with an average 3". Best group of 1.5" after lapping . Took my gunsmiths advice and sold it. Hated to see it shoot so poorly because I liked the rifle & really wanted it to be a shooter
I called the Hornady Black....that stuff is amazing....I use it in all my hunting rifles....and never fails me. Hurts the wallet a bit...but when trying to kill a deer or bear.....I only want to take 1 sure shot.
Before the ammo shortage i had a hard time finding grendal ammo around here in western new york. During the shortage and now i found quite a bit if that makes any sense🤔🤣.
Take a bowl. Put in 3 of each, let someone else, blinded pick 5 cartridges and shoot a good string and se what happens at 100 yards, are a mix good enough for a hunt at max 100 yards. Just what could happen when new ammo could not be found and You only have some in the emergency box?
Man you need to reload. Honestly I have had the best results on deer with the 120 gr speer gold dot. it doesn't have as high of a B.C. as the SST but I have not recovered a bullet from a deer. And it seems to kill deer really good. I've killed deer with the 123 SST,120 pro hunter ,120 gold dot. And the factory 120 gr hpbt ppu . The gold dot is my pick, and believe it or not the 120 hpbt ppu slays deer, I know people think it's a bunk bullet But it works pretty well. Welcome to the club.
WhoTWho this is a Great Video on the 6.5 Grendel and some nice ammo. I wish you would have mentioned the Hornady Black, the Eld match rounds and the Wolf steel Case FMJ are Not for Deer hunting as they do not expand upon impact as you know. They are simply for target shooting and killing coyotes, possums, raccoon, and other vermin if needed.
I love this Ruger.... mine is very accurate! I hate the magazine, though! Too bad they don't have smaller magazine.... flush fitting, and easy to carry. Who needs more than 4 or 5 rounds? I know I dont... The big Mag makes the rifle a lot harder to carry in the woods. The Grendel is powerful enough to kill a deer with one shot.
Thank you for making this video about the 6.5 Grendel I know it’s probably been up here for a minute but you need to clamp that device down better and did you warm up the barrel first with a couple of rounds before you start shooting or did you do a cold barrel shot?

love my Grendel, shoot it more than any caliber right now and have tried all those factory loads, but never good results, but mine loves handloads! Easy under .5" MOA with 5 shots @ 100yrds using 95g & 130g AMAX, also like 123 & 108 Lapua
The wolf bullet mic out at .261 and 6.5 is .264, love the Grendel round and have harvest many deer with it.
On my 1915 Swede I used 90 gr. Nosler at accuracy load , any more powder went wild . I got 3 inch exits close range .
Great grounps sir, didn't expect much from the wolf stuff but still wasn't bad
Just what we wanted to see :). Just need an expansion vid, and the long range vid you mentioned and we'll be right :)
Equipment wise , barrel length, rifling ratio , and finally barrel profile 👊🏼🤙🏼
Paper plate targets .... LOL YOU ROCK MAN ...... I did that when I was a dirt poor security guard.
Duramag (C-Products Defense) makes 5, 10, 15, & 20 round "AR style" mags in 6.5 Grendel / 6mm ARC. Coated stainless mags - always worked for me.
Can't beat the SST bullets! The barns are great but not awesome lol. Now you need a 6mm arc. Mine will be done in 2 weeks I hope.
That rifle will flat out shoot good job great video
I would like to see how it does at 300 400 and 500 yds because those are more of a hunting range for most of us westerns
I wish you had some Barnal. As steel case goes, that stuff can compete with match ammo.
Thank you for making this video about the 6.5 Grendel I know it’s probably been up here for a minute but you need to clamp that device down better and did you warm up the barrel first with a couple of rounds before you start shooting or did you do a cold barrel shot?
love my 6.5 grendrl.. it's an 18"heavy fluted barrel ar15. the only thing I dont like is how much ammo costs for it(if you can even find it)!!!
Sweet set up hope u had a good Easter buddy.
Sure did
@@WHOTEEWHO good happy to happy to hear it
You move your gun when you reload or move your bolt to rechamber
Performance wise on deer, SST are amazing but so are barnes vortex.
I'm going to have to load some of those 6.5 tac tx projectiles in my Creedmoor
Excited for this. I did a similar video with my ruger american 6.5 grendel as well and curious to see if the groups are similar. Also did one with my howa mini action 1500 6.5 grendel. That's a fun rifle as well
I can’t wait for the drop video! You’ve convinced me to Grendel in the ruger American
Already filmed it! Will be out this week!
I had nothing but great accuracy with the Wolfe ammo. Serbian made... Like Privi Partisan ammo.
Same plant.....
I hunt with the Hornady black 123 htbt and it's pretty accurate too
This little thing is fast and accurate so far, make a tool for the boys this coming season. Good shooting and gods speed to ya WTW YA DA MAN 🎥💯👍💪🏽
I love it!
Joel, if you can watch the premiere. Hope great Easter with family 👪, !!
@@randyadams03 catching it this morning soon as I got up. Get up before 4 every morning so it’s better to catch them in the AM for me. Hope you and yours are doing good, thanks for the kind words Randy. Good shooting to ya Sir 👍👍
Just killed a 100lb white tail doe with Horandy Custom SST, definitely gets the job done.
Adam, my Ruger predator 6.5 creedmoor likes the Hornady blacks, yours probably will too in grendal
I had a load in 25-06 with the SST that was a half in. All day but they destroy way too much meat a shoulder shot deer was a waist the off shoulder pulled off with the skin and I could put my hat in the hole in the ribs I switched to ballistic tips but I liked the canalur on the Hornady they are great if you don't want to eat what you shoot
Freind of of mind as a 6.5 Grendel that round is amazing but myself ill stick with my 30-06 for hunting
Love your videos
Appreciate you watching bigtime
The only reason I'm considering this boolot is because I can buy an upper and bcg for my AR15 and have the best of both worlds in my favorite rifle setup.
👍👍
The first round after an ammo change may shoot at a different location. Almost seems as though it needs "seasoned" so to speak.
After 4 months or longer of waiting here in Arkansas my local gun shop finally got som Hornady Black eld math ballistic tip 123 gr . I bought my rifle and asked if they had any Ammo they said no , so i said no worry's ill find some , Boy i had no idea how hard it was going to be to find .
In a 24" upper, those 123 SST shoot cloverleaf groups for me.
