Vallejo Game Air -- First Impressions

- Hey everyone!
I got my hands on the new line of Vallejo Game Air paints, and I thought I'd share my first impressions. In this preview, I look at what colors made the jump from Vallejo Game Color to Game Air; take an in-depth look at the primers and metallics; give a few side-by-sides with VGC counterparts to examine finish and color matching; and I give a brief demo while discussing their overall effectiveness.
Thank you all for watching, and I hope you enjoy these paints as much as I do!

First actually useful review of this paint i could find and it's 5 years old. Well done chap.
Great review. Just got an airbrush for Christmas and this review had made my mind up on what paint to start with. Thanks! :-)
I'm glad to see more videos from you now. To me this was actually one of your best uploads, thanks!
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it! I should have more videos on the way before too long. Thanks for watching!
Greetings from London UK. Excellent review!! Good job!! Thank you so much for taking the time to show us this. Atb Alan 👍
Thanks for this review! I've been very curious about these and now I'm really looking forward to them!
Thanks, Nick! They're really awesome -- you'll be quite pleased when you get them!
Great review, That's what I was waiting for! I already got the whole VMA line and I think the two will make an awesome combo. I'll get me the whole VGA set as soon as possible for sure!
Good choice -- these are a great combo with VMA. Between the two, you should have just about any color you want ... except turquoise and jade greens :) Thanks for attaching!
Thanks for posting this Andrew, looking forward to getting my hands on these!
Thanks, Sacrament! These are great and I know you won't be disappointed!
That was a really comprehensive review. Thank you for doing it.
Thanks! And thank you for watching!
I was curious how much I should thin down the new game air line, thankfully in your video you described a 3:1 ratio and that has given me a place to start. Thank you for your continued support to the wargaming community!
Thanks for the review. Can hardly wait for release of this set.
Hooraaaay! I really enjoy Vallejo Model Air, so the announcement of this new line from for game colors has me giddy!
Great job on the review. You answered my questions thoroughly.
Thanks, Jeff! Thanks for watching!
Hey Andrew, great review of Vallejo's new range. Great to see you back on TH-cam.
Thanks, Motan! I appreciate it!
I've been using Vallejo paints for 15 plus years And it was always a wanted line. Hopefully they will continue to expand their lines so the hobbyist can use 100 percent Vallejo products on their models and figures. It would be nice to see Vallejo oil paints. Thanx for the video and review!!
Perfect! I waited for colors like this soooo long. Thanks for your review. I have to buy those color range. I hope their are available soon.
I have waited for these forever, too! They won't disappoint. I've read that these paints have been shipped to distributors, and then they should be trickling into stores very soon. Hopefully you'll find them in the next few weeks!
Best review so far, I will try some in the future
Thanks for the review. I guess I'll add these to my Valejo collection. I love the model air line, so I'm looking forward
to trying these.
If you like VMA, you're going to love these as well. Thanks for watching!
Great news, thank you so much for this excellent review! Now I'm all excited.. Please make some of your cool tutorials with these colours!
Thanks, bcderue! I appreciate it! I will indeed be using these in my upcoming tutorials!
Thanks for sharing the great review. I hope to see an Ultramarine and green Dark Angel painted with these colors in the future. Very cool stuff. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Rookie! I appreciate it!
Thanks for that- awesome! Really looking forward to these
Thanks! You're going to love them -- they're really nice paints!
I hope that you'll continue to do your amazing videos
Totally agree with you regarding these pre-diluted paints. They are brilliant! I bought a cheapo airbrush and compressor combo from Amazon for around £50, and this exact set of paints. This was my third throw of the dice with airbrushing and the previous two airbrushes ended up in the bin. I could never get the mix of the paint right, which led either to a clogging head, a splatter kind of spray if too thick, or paint runs if too thin and generally a huge hill of pain. But even with a cheap airbrush which I have used for a month now, no clogs, no runs and a consistent finish every time. I would highly recommend Vallejo's airbrush cleaner too as it takes away the fuss of a messy clean-up afterwards. I have a SAGUD cleaning canister - also from Amazon, and just squirt some cleaner into the paint reservoir of the airbrush then spray through two or three times into the cannister and it is job done!
great review, thx for sharing your experiences and thoughts on this :)
Thanks, unkhter -- I appreciate it!
These look great. Thanks for the review.
They are indeed quite great! Thanks for watching!
Great demonstration. My buddy got a set of these too and he loves them.
Thanks! I have a feeling there will be a pretty unanimous consensus that these are awesome!
I have this line on the way in the mail now! I can't wait to try them out! I just started using an airbrush recently, so I don't really have any of the Air lines from Vallejo. I'll have to get a couple of the VMA colors you mention make up for the ones lacking in the VGA line. (That's Video Graphics Array paints :D )
Yay, you're alive!
Indeed I am!! :) Thanks for watching!
Thanks, this gave me just the info I was looking for.
Nice review just ordered me the set from amazon
Excellent review. Great info here. You always post awesome videos. I can't wait to get my hands on this set. Do you still use your own mixture for thinning the paint or is the thinner in the set the way to go?
I still prefer my own, but the thinner included works really well too. I don't think it has quite as much drying retarder (if any), but it seems to help the paint flow smoothly without any trouble -- so that's good!
Great review very interesting . Thanks a lot for shearing
Thanks, Aceface! Glad you liked it!
Very good to see and hear. I think I'll end up ordering some of the colors to start off with. I went all in (and my roommate did too) on minitaire and haven't really been happy with how they worked. Roommate was especially irked at some of the minitaire paints. We've been trying some of Golden's paint line and while I haven't tried any of their High Flow paints through an airbrush, their more standard fair have turned out pretty good on the Convergence army I'm working on. I guess I'm just a glutton for punishment, finding new and interesting paints makes me want to try them all.
Haha, yeah I have way more paints than any human should ever have. Sorry to hear you and your roommate were disappointed with the Minitaire. I had high hopes too. But I really think you'll like these paints a ton. I'm already eagerly waited an expansion set :)
Great review thanks for posting this video mate :)
Thanks, and thanks for watching!
Great review, thanks!
Yeah. I'm buying this set.
Thanks, Zaph! I appreciate it!
This is awesome. I use game air a lot through my airbrush and it does have a lot of issues with the big pigments.
I know nothing about Warhammer model painting or model painting but this video felt really informative. Great video... just bought the black paint so I could get dark soft colours for my art (on paper)
Guess I will be double dipping. Really great review.
Great video - Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
I've been considering picking up some of these for brush painting, now that I have seen what a properly-thinned paint will do to improve the quality of my work. I prefer dropper bottles for easier control of proportions when thinning, and it's nice to see a line that's got most of the colors I'd want from VGC without the thickness and nozzle-clogging I get in those bottles.
Thanks for the review, I'll be replacing my remaining VGC colors with VGA as funds permit. If I like them as much as you have - and this review seems to indicate that I will - I'll be recommending them to readers of my Sage Brush painting blog. Thanks again!
Great review!
Thanks for the details, and in taking the time to put in the text labels in the video in the comparison shots.
one question: what is your preferred thinner for VGA and VMA?
thanks!
Thanks, dave! I always thin my paints with the same mixture. In one dropper bottle, I mix up a solution of 50% distilled water, 40% drying retarder (I use Liquitex Slo-Dri, but any will work), and 10% flow aid (I use Liquitex Flow-Aid, but, again, any acrylic flow improver will work). I like this mix for any paints. The VGA set comes with a bottle of airbrush thinner, and I have tried that out, too. So far I think it works quite nicely! I don't know what the formula is, but it seems to work pretty well!
Hey great review!
I am wondering if there is an equivalent to heavy black green? I am painting my dropzone commander UCM army in it and a game air would be amazing to speed it up :)
Damn nice. This might pull me back into painting.
Sweet! Sometimes it just takes a new product or shiny new toy to reignite the painting spark. Hopefully these will do the trick!
Thanks! really relevant video
Thanks Kommissar! Hope you enjoy the paints if you decide to try them out!
Is there any specific ratios you would recommend for Vallejo Game Air in regards to thinning?
I just picked up the full set of Game Air paints and I'm wondering if there's any thinning that needs to be done to achieve the maximum desired result.
I've been hearing around, including this video, that Game Air is designed to go straight through the airbrush without further thinning, but since all I'm used to using currently is thinned P3, I'm not sure what to do.
So do we have a date when they are coming out?
Nice, when did this come out?
wow i didnt even know about this line but i need it!
Haha, indeed! These are great and I feel like the community is going to love this new line.
Im fairly new to airbrushing and just had my first bad experience last night trying to use VMC oily steel in my airbrush. Even with thining and using a dab of flow improver i got a few clogs and cleaning out the sparklies was a hassle. Regardless, my dunecrawler is looking great, but how do the VGA metallics compare as far as flow and sparkly stuff? Honestly after having to disassemble to clean the sparkles I don't want to use metallics in my airbrush again, but if the VGA is easy to get out with just cleaner and a ratty paintbrush I might pursue it.
what air brush do you suggest for gaming (starter one that i can abuse)
Hey Andrew,
It's good to have you back in the hobby after your long break. I really love your professional videos. I have never seen the minitaire paints in any shop here in Europe but many people are using Tamiya acrylics for their airbrush (beside Vallejo Air). Have you ever tested the Tamiya colors?
Best regards,
Marcus
Hi Taugrumbler~ I have not used any Tamiya acrylics through the airbrush, but I have used Tamiya Clear Red and Smoke for blood and oil effects. I will take a look at some of their acrylics and see how they work -- thanks for the tip!
Hi. This vallejo air is good for Garage kits ? such as Girl anime resin.
Thx so much
How do you thin your various model air and what PSI do you use? I can't seem to get regular model air to work, whether I use it straight from the bottle, thin it with vallejo thinner, add retarder, or even add windex as my hobby shop guy advised. They keep drying out in about 10 seconds and giving me irregular spray patterns. Everyone talks about how great they are, but I can't seem to get them to work.
hey schnauzer,I don't own an airbrush, but I love to use VMA as a brush on paint would these be worth my time painting with?
Hey kinda late, but... Schnauzer... you said there is an alternative or equivalent for the Game Color Ghost Grey...
Can you tell me which model air color is this alternative? I really wish to find a Ghost Grey for my Airbrush.
Hello, I' new to model painting, and specially air brushing. Right now im only using the air brush for priming.
I'm using Vallejo Surface Primer and i have looked around and some people say that it works fine straight out of the bottle, with no thinning.
So that's what i have done, with kinda good result.
But you are talking a lot about thinning and mixing if I'm not mistaking? And what si your thought about thinning, when it comes to the Surface Primer and this Air colours you are talking about in the video?
Can you use these with a brush since they are already thinned? Cause I don't want to go through the troubles of a thinner
How does the VGA metallics compared to the old VA metallics? I love how vibrant the Vallejo metallics in alcohol but not the VA metallics. Cheers.
sorry about this being off subject.
Can't seem to get signed up on your site?...
Hi there.
I have an airbrush question for you.
I have been using the Harder and steenback infinity for a few years now and I love the airbrush. But it seems to have more over spray then it should have. and it has for as long as I can remember?... The paints that I use are not too thin or thick. I use mostly VMA's and Badger Minitair. any ideas of what could be the problem? and how to fix it?
one more question.
I just got myself the Badger Renegade Krome and I am stoked to try it out. Problem is that is doesn't connect to my air hose? IS there a certain adapter and/or hose that I can get to have it connect properly? I'd prefer to be able to switch back and forth between my airbrushes with a few problems as possible. The badger also seems to have come with some other kind of adapter for another kind of hose? (Iwata?)
Great man!
Cheers,
Killax
I might have to pick up the primers and metallics at least from this set. I'm glad the metals work well painted on. Did you try hand painting some of the other colours?
I did! I painted Electric blue by hand on the Khador model. That was the paint I mentioned covering in 3 coats when thinned 1:1, but I kind of ran out of room to put that footage. But they cover about the same as VMA, so they're great for regular brush work too. The metallics are the very first paints I'd recommend from this set -- they're pretty flipping sweet!
Would you by any chance mind posting what the color matches are in Model Air that you mention for paints missing from Game Air? Thinking of picking up those paints to fill in the holes.
***** While I have been waiting for an answer I have been doing a little research with Vallejo's color equivalency charts at cdn.acrylicosvallejo.com/0049261608364909a238add9b4a53745/CC073-rev05.pdf and by converting Game color to Model Color to Model Air I got the below Equivalencies. As you can see per Vallejo only four have exact matches, though I have seen listings on places like Dakka Dakka that are more lenient and have more matches.

I am so glad you made this video. I will save my money for these paints. I almost bought the Minitaire line.....
Thanks! Glad to hear the video changed your mind. These are really quality paints that I'm sure you'll love.
SchnauzerFaceMinis Did you happen to see the message I sent you?
Hi there.
I have an airbrush question for you.

Turquoise, Foul Green, Jade Green, Scurvy Green - got these, love them. Would miss. Terracota is also awesome.
How did you find the finished texture? I got some and they leave a sticky, almost rubber like finish. Did yours do this too?
do you have to thin these paints before using them in the airbrush
Been waiting for these a while, ever since Rogland showed off on facebook some prototypes he was sent. Vallejo says they've been sent out to their distributors, and I've seen a few sites listing them for preorder, so hopefully it won't be too long,
I've been waiting a while to find some good yellows.
Awesome! Can't wait for them to start making their way to the distributors and local stores. These yellows are really nice. I like Reaper Lemon Yellow, but it's a little desaturated compared to these. If you play Imperial Fists or any army that utilizes yellow, these are going to help a LOT!
Good review buddy, thanks for putting it up! How did you get them?
Thanks! I emailed Vallejo to ask where I could buy them, and they were kind enough to send me a set to review. Very cool of them!
When do we see those new videos using VGA?
They are coming out the 15 of august here in the UK
So Schnauzer, when's the next video? watching your tutorials is awesome for people who have no idea what to do when painting models.
just ordered the full set :)...I too bought the minotaur set..and while I got a lot done, the cons are pretty dead on in your vid..lotta gloss, still needs lots of thinning. I DO like their Ghost Tints, especially the Oil Discharge, which gets used a LOT.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that is disappointed with Minitaire paints.
I think a lot of people felt let down. I have spoken with quite a few people on FB, TH-cam, various forums, and locally who were disappointed as well. It looks like several people have voiced their disappointment on the comments of this video, too. But you'll love these :)
I have about 15 of the Minitaires. They are very glossy and the metallics are glittery.
*** Black Knight Games will have Vallejo Game Air at GenCon! ***
We will be in the Iwata booth (#2631) and will have the full line. We only have a limited stock, so we expect to sell out quickly. If you want to try the paint out for yourself, we will have paint and takes throughout the day so you can see for yourself.
Obviously, we will have Iwata airbrushes and compressors and Armorcast, who donated the paint and take projects will be in the booth.
Jay Adan, my TH-cam buddy will be giving demos and so will I.
There will be a lot of free swag as well!
Thanks for this video Schnauzer. You did a great job of going through the quality of VGA. I have been testing the line myself, and just love it.
If you are going to be at GenCon, please stop by and say hello.
Take care,
B.
Good evening, can you give me a tip. What a good airbrush is for a beginner (dual action) and can you tell me what brand of brushes you using?
grtings
The wolf grey from the VGA line isn't anything like the fenris grey/wolf grey from vgc, how
Do you deal with this?
I'm looking at my bottle of VGC Wolf grey side-by-side with my bottle of VGA Wolf Grey, and they look extremely similar. It could be you got a bad batch of the new one?
Have you tried the Gunze paints? A lot of Aircraft modellers think they're the best airbrush acrylics on the market.
Any further thoughts after getting to spend more time testing them out?
I still love them! I've been using them a lot recently and they're great. Still wish I had some nice turquoise shades, but adding P3 Turquoise Ink to VGA Electric Blue gets me the right color. Other than that, they're my go-to paint.
This looks very very promising :)
I'm only starting out with airbrushing still, but I can see how this will make things better.
I don't hope you mind me asking this (cause I didn't do alot of research on it yet... so google might know the answer as well), but I noticed you spray your varnish with the same airbrush you use for the paints. Doesn't this cause an issue? Also, I heard you mention you had a .15 nozzle, how do the VGC paints go through this? Cause I was actually thinking of getting a H&S ultra for the .2 nozzle, but I was worried it might be too small and have problems with the VGC line.
Sorry for the noob questions here, and I do hope you can answer them.
(Also I'll take a look at the rest of your channel haha, your dakkadakka post took me here).
Glad to answer any questions if I can! As long as I maintain the airbrush and clean thoroughly, there's no problem using varnishes. I would suggest spraying some cleaner through the airbrush after varnishing, but there's nothing to worry about. The VGC paints don't go though the .15mm that well, which is why Vallejo has created this VGA line. They work great with the airbrush. Also, I LOVE H&S airbrushes. You'd be making a very wise choice by buying one of those :) Thanks for watching!
Just what my Infinity models need :)
My Infinity needs ANY paint right now -- been unpainted for over a year!!
Need to see a vid of you painting a tag or two mate, I suggest a PAN O Cutter or Combined army Avatar ;)
Q: Is Vallejo Game Air Gory Red a good copy of Citadel Mephiston Red paint?
Where is the juggernout model from?
Did you thin the paints when using them without intentionally over thinning? If so what dilution?
Nevermind!! was impatient
Any chance you could do a tutorial for a tyranid hauraspex? Not sure how to spell it but it is something like that. Thanks man, keep up the good work
I will have to give that model a Google at some point. I've never done a real Tyranid video, so I need to at some point. I'm going to take a little break from GW, since 95% of the TH-cam painters already paint GW. But at some point I really do need to a Tyranid video!
I can not tell you how excited I am for these. I already have all the VMA's and Badger Minitair paints. this will top my collection off very nicely.
I agree with you on some of the minitair paints for sure. Their metallic paints are crappy compared to the VMA ones.
I wanted to ask you about the surface primer. I have tried it many times from different bottles, but the primer seems to clog my airbrush and come out grainy. Does this happen to you? how do you fix it?
I haven't had that problem with the primer. I've used the black and white primers for about 2.5 years and I've never had a problem. black is smoother, imo, but I've never had white clog my airbrush. Sorry i can't help -- that's unusual!
They are advertised as being able to shoot through a 0.2mm nozzle without thinning. What are your thoughts?
Hi Michael! I tested out the regular (non-metallic) paints unthinned through my 0.15, and they actually worked OK. If you're looking for paints that can go without any thinner, these will work but they really will work better thinned 2:1 or 3:1. I like adding thinner because I feel like it helps the paint run through the airbrush smoother and cuts down on tip dry and clogging. I always use the primer without any thinner, and that works just fine. I think these paints are pretty much the same consistency as the primer. Someone left a comment on my FB that they shouldn't have to thin these because they're "airbrush ready." I disagreed because I feel like "airbrush ready" really has more to do with the size of the pigments and not the consistency of the paint. I'm happy to throw a few drops of thinner in the airbrush if it'll help the paint flow and keep clogs to a minimum. But if the pigment isn't ground finely enough, there's absolutely no way to remedy that. Also, if the coverage is the same at 2:1 as it is straight from the bottle, throwing that extra drop of thinner in there will extend the life of the paint by 33%. Hope this helps!
good to know the silvers don't have that glittery effect that a lot of airbrush silvers do, I recently picked up Cyriss and they are just a bore to paint without something fast and efficient like an airbrush
These are pretty awesome. I have to say, though, that I painted a Cyriss model recently using Alclad II Lacquer metallics. WOW those are awesome! Even better than these. But they're kind of a pain to work with (they're not acrylics). But if you want to dig around on the internet, I recommend picking up Alclad II Magnesium (dark metallic) and Alclad II Aluminium (brightest metallic). They have to go on with an airbrush over a gloss black undercoat, but man are they smooth and reflective. Your army would look pretty sweet using those paints! If you prefer the ease of acrylics, though, these are pretty awesome.
How many bottles come in the line
Do you need to use the retardant to avoid clogging like vgc? Or just 1/3 thinning with their thinner?
I would have liked Jade and Scurvy Green to be in the range, since those are the base for my jade-colored Skorne.
Ah! I just painted a couple of jade Skorne Mammoths. I used Scurvy --> Jade --> Foul Green, and that trio looks stunning. It worked OK on a Gargantuan, but I wouldn't count on them airbrushing with much precision on 30mm models. Oh well -- maybe they'll get a release in the future.
I really want to try these guys out on my robotech minis they look like they would be perfect for them
I need to pick up some Robotech minis -- they're pretty cool!
I really want to paint them up right I'm thinking the cartoon colors but more realistic probably preshading . As for buying the game or model air I'm a little shit out of luck I lost my job after buying them and I can't find a job so they will have to wait but spending all that money on the paint and them turning out the be crap has really shaken my love of badger
That and I bought the renegade velocity airbrush only weeks before the krome came out so I was pissed at that
Please please please make some tutorials with these paints :) they look awesome!
Will do! In fact, every tutorial will probably have 75% or more Vallejo. P3 and Reaper are still pretty great, too, but I'm really in love with these right now!
SchnauzerFaceMinis The only thing that annoys me is that i already have the whole vgc range, so they'll be effectively useless once i get these :(
Do you know whats is the diffrents between "Vallejo Model color and Game Colors ?? I paint mostly GW miniatures =)
+DiMoNico1981Swe Model Color is more realistic, gritty colors for people doing like World War 2 models. Game Colors is bright for Warhammer-types.
Really nice!...And I would love to see the completed Juggernaut.
Thanks Jonny! I should probably do another Khador jack tutorial, but I've done Karchev and a Kodiak so I guess I should give other factions some love. But maybe a white alt-scheme Spriggan? That could be fun...
It's like a photonegative of Minitaire (or what they were supposed to be). Can't wait to get these.
Are the Minitaire no good? I have not had a chance to try them.
There not really that good I found that they separated on the model after I sprayed them and some of the replacement paints they sent me were a diferent shade then the paint it was replacing
APHEX_TWIN I would literally rather use Apple Barrel or craft store paints. I can't think of a worse paint commercially marketed at miniature painting. However, Badger airbrushes are fantastic.
Daniel Ebling And that was probably a GOOD batch.
I completely regret buying them and I haven't really used them since I got them
How do they stack up to the scale 75 paints?
Good question! I've actually never used the Scale 75 paints, but I'd like to give them a whirl at some point.
Thanks for the reply and thanks for the video.
If I gave you two Forgeworld Primarchs, a Warmaster Horus and one of you choice could you send the Horus painted back to me? I would love it if you made videos on both and kept the one you chose.
My reaction upon seeing the title of this video... O.o
I honestly had to read it twice to make sure I saw what I thought I saw, then I thought "wtf?". This may be the single greatest thing to happen to airbrushes and wargamers in a long time (and yes, I am exaggerating a little, but is kind of awesome).
Haha, that was my same reaction when I first read about these new paints. I don't think my wife understood why I was so excited, but this is HUGE news!
thanks!!!
Thank YOU for watching!
Can you tell us your thinning recipe? I just discovered your channel
Hi! I use a mix of about 50% distilled water, 40% drying retarder (I use Liquitex Slo Dri, but any acrylic drying retarder works) and 10% Liquitex Flow Aid (again, any flow improver works). I mix all that up in a large dropper bottle, shake, and then thin with that. Works great for me!
I've had the same level of disappointment with Minitaire. In my case they all dried very glossy, and had to be thinned down on a 2:1 in order to actually go through my airbrush (an 0.3mm). The black and white are especially temperamental and too thick for what I want to do.
Conversely, their ghost tint paint has been fine and I've used them for a bit of OSL work to good effect. The colors do have a nasty habit of being different from bottle to bottle (oil discharge being the prime culprit for me), so I think Minitaire needs to up their quality control and maybe go back to their paint formula and work on making them better.
I agree -- I really, really, really wanted to love Minitaire because the color line is just gorgeous. But beautiful colors do no good if the formula is bad. I have given up on all of them, and even the ghost tints give me trouble (though they're still worth using, imo). I don't feel like these VGA paints were rushed to market the way Minitaire seems to have been, so hopefully you'll like these a lot more!
My experience with Vallejo Model Air has been nothing but fantastic, so I'm eager to get my hands on their new line. Minitaire I'm hoping will improve over time, because as you said their line is full of gorgeous colors and their pricing is amazing for the amount you get, but as they stand now it really isn't worth spending money on for the level of inconsistency.
