My favorite genre is "rich people horror"... you know the ones with fancy houses by the lake/forest, uncomfortable evening dinners and everyone is a wine addict... He's an architect, she's a psychiatrist for children. And then spooky stuff happens :o
I liked the film The Luring. It's a psychological thriller and it takes place in Vermont, The house in it is remote but not typical remote if that makes any sense. Very creepy.
Would love, adore and appreciate a tier list of scream queens! I think there have been so many incredible actors who have been wonderful at their craft and it would be great to highlight them. it would also be a great opportunity to highlight some older actors from the 70s and 80s as well.
@@jadew2072 You guys smash two (or 3) sounds into one, usually vowels. I like how you put the list together. I agree that zombies belong in the 'Group Watch' tier at this point, the genre became so oversaturated in the late 2000s-early 2010s, despite the fact that 1978s' Dawn Of The Dead is my honest to God favorite movie of all time. Also, I agree with Action Horror being in 'Unpredictable', but Alien: Covenant? Really? You couldn't go with the original? 😄

Amazing list, Emma! I always get so confused to hear you say that Home Invasion isn't super effective for you as it is the one subgenre that really gets under my skin!
I loved Hellraiser too! For me, it’s definitely a combo of body horror, cosmic to an extent, and it’s got pyschosexual elements. They’re very hard to pin down to one theme. My fave sub genres are for sure psychological, vampires, gore, gothic
Hellraiser released in my country years delayed, I was 10 and my dad took me to watch it... Because I liked horror. Let's say that when the psychosexual elements kicked in, we both knew I shouldn't be there 😂
I feel like I’m the only person who loves anthologies. Whenever I watch reviewers talk about them they have the same opinion as you but I feel the opposite, each segment has the opportunity to blow me away. I especially think the framing device can make it fun, like Mortuary Collection. I always say I don’t like zombie things but two of my favs (Little Monsters and One Cut of the Dead) are zombie movies. (I’m also a huge resident evil fan.) it’s one of those “it has to be good” genres for me I guess. Body horror is the one I really struggle with personally, but I think that’s an extension of having BDD. Not feeling at home in your own body hits a little too hard for me. I really agree with a lot of your opinions overall! I’m always here for ghosts and witches!! More ghost films please, Emma wills it!
I agree with anthologies. It's true that over all they are only as good as their worst entry, but on the other hand, I don't have to love the entire movie to have found one really fun segment that kind of redeems the entire viewing experience. And Trick R Treat is probably a top 20 horror movie for me (maybe even top ten.)
Psychobiddy is my favorite subgenre. Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, Straight Jacket, Whoever Slew Auntie Roo? What's the Matter With Helen? Sometimes Aunt Martha Does Dreadful Things, Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker, Blood Rage (that works as a slasher and a psychobiddy)... it's a niche subgenre but I love it.
Love the tier list! It would be so cool to see you expand on your favorites/misses from each genre! Like horror comedy, I would love to find some lesser known films that you liked, other than what was mentioned of course

I LOVE anthologies. I always saw it as kind of a showcase for directors I've never heard of, and it leads me down rabbit holes that way. Plus I've always been more of a fan of bite sized stories. Something about the tight time frame, that leave certain questions unanswered, works well to keep things mysterious
Love the list!!! 💜 You asked a good question about Hellraiser. It's definitely body horror with gore/splatter, religious and occult themes. So it's a complicated movie for sure.
@@spookyastronauts Emma, maybe You can do a "Top Ten" Video for each of the 25 Sub-Genres, if You haven't ALREADY done that. (Sorry for not knowing if You have done this ALREADY) 😀

There is a lot of stinkers but there is a lot of great ones too.
I would put Hellraiser in the Splatter section. So much of it is focused on the graphic gooey practical effects, including the body modifications of the cenobites.
Today I just found out about the subgenre 'quiet horror' (I obviously don't watch much horror, I just like your channel). Quiet Horror I think is my A tier. Maybe you sort of covered it with cosmic and psychological? I'm more reader than watcher, and I love Shirley Jackson. My two fave horror movies are A Quiet Place (the oG) and An American Werewolf in London.
Obviously, there's SO many horror sub genres it would be impossible in a single video to remember and name them all, but one that I enjoy that you missed is one that I think of as "Entity" movies. I define this genre as modern/urban setting, and some sort of not easily classified being with it's own unique "rules" and lore. Examples are Smile, It Follows, The Babadook, Sinister, Slenderman, etc. It can't be stated to be a ghost or demon or based on folklore, or whatever, it's just some unnamed and unexplained intelligent thing that has it's own special rules. These stories feel like they borrow a lot from certain "creepy pastas" or SCP ideas.
Thanks Emma. Your lists, help me in my own thinking about horror. I have identified several more rather large genres that have been squatting in the middle of us all for years growing and growing. I'm going to do something in the next on Cabal Horror. I'm nit going to tell you what it is yet. But I'll let you know when I post it. Also I'm making a bigger distinction now between subject horror (vampires, zombies, haunted houses, etc) and mood horror (found footage, J-horror, folk horror, etc.) and these almost seem like two entirely different ways of categorizing horror films and often have films that totally overlap in other ways of defining genres. But that's the fun isn't it. Then again I have a LOT of physical copies so I had to choose between which style of genre keeping I was using. So rather than use any of the mood horror for my shelves it's all subject horror. Which means found footage films are in all the categories that they deal with, rather than a separate section for each sort of mood or style. Anyway I will be making many more pieces on horror genres.
To me slashers are the definition of Unpredictable, so I got to agree. There is a ton of hidden gems in the genre like The Burning, House on Sorority or My Bloody Valentine, but so much of it sucks like Pieces or The Mutilator. However, some films in the big franchises are great like the Friday the 13th sequels and the original Halloween, while other entries are overrated such as the first Friday the 13th or the Halloween sequels. It feels like you don't know where the good slasher films are, because of how rough some series can be and how some of the worst standalone slasher films are more popular than the best ones. It's just a mess all around for me, and I don't know if I am going into a good movie or a bad movie.
Great tier list! And thank you for saying things aren't back to normal re: covid; they really aren't. And I'm one of those sickos who still enjoys watching apocalytic horror, some zombie stuff, pandemic stuff...so thanks for making me feel at home here on this corner of the internet. :)
I do consider Hellraiser as body horror :) My favourite subgenre is Gothic. I just adore the atmosphere and the way it isolates characters to expose their psychology. And the use of light, dark and empty spaces to create scares. The Innocents has to be one of the more underrated horror films of all time, it's so beautifully made and the lady on the lake is one of the enduring images that sends shivers down my spine. And an all-timer performance by Deborah Kerr. I'd love to see some more Cosmic Horror coming through, it's my other fave. Done well there could be some spectacular films in the future - a chance for a filmmaker with a real vision to create something awesome. I've heard that Guillermo del Toro is interested in creating such a film and doing it right - and I think he'd be the perfect person for the job. It's tricky though, it will require a sort of balancing act between what is shown and what is suggested (to keep the 'beyond comprehension' of it all) - so I'm thinking sound design, playing with settings and lighting, maybe an oceanic setting would provide the mystery and depth needed.
Great job in putting this list together, Emma. My tier list turned out to be quite odd in its results. Psychological Horror was the only subgenre that made it to Most Anticipated, though I am figuring "Mystery Horror/Thriller" to be a subgenre very close to Psychological. That's just showing my love of older films, I think. I have "Slasher" as Good Time, but "Gore/Splatter" at Watchlist Purgatory. I love murder mysteries, just not gory ones. 😉 Action/Horror, Alien and Creature Feature also all Good Times.
I just watched a indie horror film called The Luring and I really liked it. It's super creepy and weird but in a good way. I like that it had fractal effects like how the lights dim in some scenes putting the characters in this void so when the devil talks to the protagonist he's really talking to his soul.
You are the only person I’ve ever heard even mention ‘The Wind’ and I had the most bizarre glitch in the matrix experience with this movie. I watched it 3 times because I kept forgetting that I watched it (I did the same thing with Constantine) BUT the second time I watched it I swear the villain was genuinely supernatural and the husband eventually believed the wife because he saw it for himself but when I watched it a 3rd time it was back to being her losing her mind in the harsh conditions. It really messed me up because I can’t find anything about an alternate ending being shot.
this video started me wondering, is there an "opposite" of Folk Horror? and then I thought about how Folk Horror tends to be rural and about poor people; Gothic Horror! also tends to be period horror but set in huge mansions and about counts and the ghosts of powerful families, rich people SpookyAustronauts, the opposite of Folk Horror is Gothic Horror; you're welcome ❤
I had to play along here! :) Maybe these would change over time, and I have favourites even in the ones I'd consider risky (e.g. The Witch), but I think I'm happy with these choices XD S - Most Anticipated: Psychological, Possession, Witches A - A Good Time: Slashers, Gothic, Home Invasion, Occult, Religious, Aliens B - Unpredictable: Action Horror, Found Footage, Ghosts, Vampires, Christmas Horror C - Risky Cinema Trip: Apocalyptic, Folk Horror, Cosmic Horror D - Group Watch Only: Gore/Splatter, Zombies, Anthology, Body Horror, Comedy Horror, Creature Feature E - Watchlist Purgatory: Western, Werewolves
Okay, got to get into this :) ...I expect to find out a lot about myself by filling this out, lol S- Most Anticipated: Comedy, Cosmic, Creature, Werewolves A- Good Time: Action, Body, Christmas, Occult, Witches B- Unpredictable: Anthology, Apocalyptic, Folk, Ghost, Gothic, Home Invasion, Psychological, Western C- Risk: Aliens, Found Footage, Religious, Zombies D- Group: Slashers, Vampires E- Watchlist Purgatory: Possession, Gore My approach to this, thinking about the theater experience, is to default to Unpredictable and adjust from there based on my heart rate :D I also want to say that my 'Group Watch' only isn't a dig against those movies, it is just that my friend group makes those more fun. Also, this is ordered in terms of "What types of movies I enjoy" rather than 'what is more scary or horrifying'. Finally, I think of Hellraiser as Creature, just with Body Horror elements.
I think its interesting that you said you werent scared of the home invasion genre. As someone who lives alone in tiny studio, thats probably my biggest fear. I literally have no escape route besides my front door and nowhere to hide but my tiny closet. That being said, I can totally see how my situation wouldn't really make for engaging cinema unless it was more psychological, like being stalkedl. If someone breaks in with the intent to kill me, thats a super short story because I'm just gonna die in like the first 5 minutes. The end, scare time over
christmas horror just reminds me of how much I want a final destination christmas movie. it would be the perfect combo of campiness, and could get really subversive/ creative
Western horror seems like such a small subgenre. I can think of maybe 5 or 6 off the top of my head, and some of those are combined with other subgenres like Near Dark, Nope, or Tremors
@@spookyastronauts I mean I'm not bashing it by any means I love that film. I just always thought of western horror as set in earlier times is all. Lol.
I'm not sure I understand your opinion on home invasion.. You don't find something true-to-life scary but you love ghost and possession movies? Those do it for you? What is it about home invasion that doesn't work for you? Genuinely curious.
I concur. I love supernatural horror but it doesn’t really scare me the same as a home invasion or slasher, something that could actually happen to me in real life. People are the scariest thing out there in the world, not ghosts or demons.
I meant I’m not scared of someone breaking into my house. Just not a fear of mine, just like I’m not scared of bugs or spiders… I know they exist but don’t scare me
"They're Watching" is one of my favorite recent witch movies, but like you say, it's sort of a reveal instead of the core theme. These days it feels like witches overlap too much with folk horror, which makes sense.
Most Anticapated: Slashers, Home Invansion, Alien, Creature Feature, and Physchological Good Time: Action Horror, Found Footage, Apocalypic, and Possesion Unpredictable: Ghost, Witch, Anthology, Gothic Risky: Cosmic and Gore (just cause sometimes the gore is just over the top and way too disturbing) Group: Comedy, Zombie, Vampire, Xmas, Body Don't care for: Werewolf, Religious, Occult (aside Midsommar, I really liked that) , Western, and Folk
Hellraiser is more Cosmic Horror than anything else, and this is because the puzzle box opens a gateway to another dimension - very much like Event Horizon does. The Thing 1982 is probably the most beloved of Cosmic Horror films, and probably the 70s version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, though yes, they could be in the Alien category as well. Bird Box, Color Out of Space, The Endless and Underwater are more recent examples of really good Cosmic Horror.
I enjoy psychological horror however I do think it's played out at the minute. This is a video game so not horror movies exactly but I'm a big fan of Alone in the Dark (the original especially) and there was a recent reboot that I also very much enjoyed. However it shifted what in the original was very much supernatural with only a thin thread of psychological horror, that was more of a misdirect if anything, into a story that focused specifically on the psychological element for much of the middle act. On it's own this is fine to me. But in a world where so much of the hyped up popular horror media (new or old) on the internet these days, is psychological horror, it felt cheap and tired to place extra focus on that small element of it. So I don't dislike the subgenre but I do think it could take a break at this point in horror as a whole, not just in movies. It might actually feel less played out if only focusing on one medium, I don't know. (side note, I'd argue Halloween actually had more in common with a gothic story than your typical slasher initially. Michael Myers was essentially a human shell for an inhuman, supernatural force of evil from ancient times. This force invades the supposed normality of a typical modern setting which becomes totally unfriendly and dangerous on Halloween night. I've always felt Halloween likely took some sort of inspiration from Dracula actually. Lots of similar elements. Ancient evil force in the shape of a man, eccentric Dr attempting to stop this force only he has any sort of understanding of, Mina/Laurie in contrast to Lucy/Laurie's friends. I'd seriously argue that after Halloween 6 that whole series totally lost itself and subsequently became more of a typical slasher than what it had been up to that point)
I’d say Hellraser is Creature Feature + Eldritch/Cosmic Horror, with a little Gore/Body. Have you watched In Fear yet? I think Cosmic, Comedy, Psychological and Folk/Occult are my top picks
I generally think of Alien as sci-fi/horror rather than action. Splitting hairs maybe...but I'm less inclined to watch action/horror if there's no sci-fi element. Also, in regards to found footage.....that's a tough one and I think you nailed it. I will absolutely watch every found footage movie I can(my favorite subgenre), but the majority of them are not very good.
I would categorize hellraiser as gothic splatter. But I could see fantasy and it definitely has body horror. But the biggest theme I always take away is the hopelessness and depravity of the human race/ experience and that reminds me a lot of the splatter and gothic genres the most.
This was an interesting exercise. I realized from this that I apparently like period-piece horror, because my S level was Folk, Gothic, Western, Witch, and Psychological, 4 of 5 of witch are usually and/or necessarily set in past eras, so that's interesting. I love Westerns anyway, and horror Westerns are great, and there just aren't enough of them. The bottom, E level of my list is Comedy, Christmas, and Werewolf. Aside from some classics, for whatever reason, I hate holiday themed things. Movies, Music, Board Games, Clothing, just about anything really. And I like the holidays, themselves (especially Halloween), but put a holiday theme on something not directly related to the holiday, and I'm out. And, while there are some great Horror Comedies (Tucker and Dale, Sean of the Dead, etc), most of the time, when I see something is a Horror Comedy, it just gets stuck in my watchlist purgatory. I like Horror. I like Comedy, but something about the combo doesn't do it for me.
They do need to do a sequel to the Nun set in the 80s where the nun is up against Sister Michael from Derry Girls. The two scariest Nuns outside the sound of music. Be like Freddie vs Jason for a new generation
Creature features at the last spot. 😭 Kaiju is not part of the tier list but it’s also part of creature features too, so it depends on how you view it. 🐢🦖
Much to think about here. I keep thinking of the ones I really love, like found footage or cosmic horror, where I always want to give them the benefit of the doubt but 97% of the time are absolute garbage. Guess that means I’m always willing to give them a go, just in case!

Action/Horror, Alien and Creature Feature also all Good Times.
Yes we need more ghost movies, like The Others or The Orphanage 😁
It really messed me up because I can’t find anything about an alternate ending being shot.
this video started me wondering, is there an "opposite" of Folk Horror? and then I thought about how Folk Horror tends to be rural and about poor people; Gothic Horror! also tends to be period horror but set in huge mansions and about counts and the ghosts of powerful families, rich people
SpookyAustronauts, the opposite of Folk Horror is Gothic Horror; you're welcome ❤
I had to play along here! :) Maybe these would change over time, and I have favourites even in the ones I'd consider risky (e.g. The Witch), but I think I'm happy with these choices XD
S - Most Anticipated: Psychological, Possession, Witches
A - A Good Time: Slashers, Gothic, Home Invasion, Occult, Religious, Aliens
B - Unpredictable: Action Horror, Found Footage, Ghosts, Vampires, Christmas Horror
C - Risky Cinema Trip: Apocalyptic, Folk Horror, Cosmic Horror
D - Group Watch Only: Gore/Splatter, Zombies, Anthology, Body Horror, Comedy Horror, Creature Feature
E - Watchlist Purgatory: Western, Werewolves
Okay, got to get into this :) ...I expect to find out a lot about myself by filling this out, lol
S- Most Anticipated: Comedy, Cosmic, Creature, Werewolves
A- Good Time: Action, Body, Christmas, Occult, Witches
B- Unpredictable: Anthology, Apocalyptic, Folk, Ghost, Gothic, Home Invasion, Psychological, Western
C- Risk: Aliens, Found Footage, Religious, Zombies
D- Group: Slashers, Vampires
E- Watchlist Purgatory: Possession, Gore
My approach to this, thinking about the theater experience, is to default to Unpredictable and adjust from there based on my heart rate :D
I also want to say that my 'Group Watch' only isn't a dig against those movies, it is just that my friend group makes those more fun.
Also, this is ordered in terms of "What types of movies I enjoy" rather than 'what is more scary or horrifying'.
Finally, I think of Hellraiser as Creature, just with Body Horror elements.
I loved this
“Jesus wept know what I mean.” Hahahaha you are amazing
I think its interesting that you said you werent scared of the home invasion genre. As someone who lives alone in tiny studio, thats probably my biggest fear. I literally have no escape route besides my front door and nowhere to hide but my tiny closet. That being said, I can totally see how my situation wouldn't really make for engaging cinema unless it was more psychological, like being stalkedl. If someone breaks in with the intent to kill me, thats a super short story because I'm just gonna die in like the first 5 minutes. The end, scare time over
Have you seen 'No One Will Save You'? It's a grey aliens horror movie that came out last year, I really enjoyed it.
Yes I reviewed it!
christmas horror just reminds me of how much I want a final destination christmas movie. it would be the perfect combo of campiness, and could get really subversive/ creative
Omggg yes
Thought process 🔥🤘🏼 Only thing missing is, Its So bad its good genre tier 😂
Hellraiser is above/beyond all categories. Favourite horror movie for me for 30 years.
One Werewolf & Comedy Horror - Wolf Cop. Still yet to watch Wolf Cop 2..
Wolf Cop is fun!
Western horror seems like such a small subgenre. I can think of maybe 5 or 6 off the top of my head, and some of those are combined with other subgenres like Near Dark, Nope, or Tremors
I never considered Nope to be a Western Horror. I do like Westworld.
Leave nope out of this haha
Just not a fear of mine, just like I’m not scared of bugs or spiders… I know they exist but don’t scare me
Would you consider Giallo films to be a sub-genre of Slashers? And regarding Hellraiser, I think it would be under gothic body horror.
"They're Watching" is one of my favorite recent witch movies, but like you say, it's sort of a reveal instead of the core theme. These days it feels like witches overlap too much with folk horror, which makes sense.
Most Anticapated: Slashers, Home Invansion, Alien, Creature Feature, and Physchological
Good Time: Action Horror, Found Footage, Apocalypic, and Possesion
Unpredictable: Ghost, Witch, Anthology, Gothic
Risky: Cosmic and Gore (just cause sometimes the gore is just over the top and way too disturbing)
Group: Comedy, Zombie, Vampire, Xmas, Body
Don't care for: Werewolf, Religious, Occult (aside Midsommar, I really liked that) , Western, and Folk
Okay, so Emma's ultimate movie would be a psychological horror movie about the ghost of a space witch :p
Sounds great
You know you’ve been following Emma for a while when you remember she didn’t like action horror and are genuinely surprised for that step up 😂
Hellraiser is more Cosmic Horror than anything else, and this is because the puzzle box opens a gateway to another dimension - very much like Event Horizon does.
Tales from the Hood is a great anthology
I would put Hellraiser in Occult I think. The hell dimensions and the puzzle box and the bargaining etc. but deffo also body horror
I got a great western for you! The Burrowers. Trust me, hidden gem
I really enjoyed The Wind.
They do need to do a sequel to the Nun set in the 80s where the nun is up against Sister Michael from Derry Girls. The two scariest Nuns outside the sound of music. Be like Freddie vs Jason for a new generation
Rare exports is my favorites Christmas horror
Where would you put Anna and the Apocalypse? It's a Christmas musical zombie horror comedy.
"i am there.. middle of the cinema" lmaooo
Amazing idea :))
Did I miss you talking about Giallo’s?
"Watch List Purgatory" as a concept feels like you're calling me out and I don't appreciate being made vulnerable on this level, Miss Missy.
Been watching "scary" movies for 55 years... my fave have always been Creature Features
what subgenre does the final destination fit in?
action horror imo
Creature features at the last spot. 😭
Kaiju is not part of the tier list but it’s also part of creature features too, so it depends on how you view it. 🐢🦖
I cathegorize hellraiser as cosmic body horror.
I watched the new Netflix film, The Deliverance, last night. Not a perfect movie, but I gobble up possession movies, too!
Love Found Footage Films 🎥 🍿
Folk horror all day! You couldn’t pay me to watch home invasion films.
Home invasion is probably my favorite
Check out The Crescent (2017) for a fine Canadian cosmic horror!
Much to think about here. I keep thinking of the ones I really love, like found footage or cosmic horror, where I always want to give them the benefit of the doubt but 97% of the time are absolute garbage. Guess that means I’m always willing to give them a go, just in case!
