  • We had a lot of interest in the Yellow Speedster/Dirt Car/Yard Cart, so we figured we would show you the "finer details" of the car. We use those words very lightly because there are some absolutely insane modifications that will surprise you! Let us know what you think we should do with it, we love your suggestions and input! Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe to keep up to date on our builds and adventures!

If you shorten the steering column, the entry and egress might work better. Then a roll bar and some kind of wind screen would be useful looking. Finally, a plywood drop in seat would be more comfy. Do consider making it complete and functional. It looks like a blast from the past. Bo.

So your butt hole is supposed to grip that stud and keep you fastened in the car ? Wouldn't seat belts work better ?

You might be surprised just how many home built dirt midgets had that (lack of) build quality back in the early days. Modern racing rules were written in blood over many years.

    • @ldnwholesale8552

Ofcourse, a V860 would make it a midget. As would 12" dia wheels. I was not thinking!!

Matt, it looks like they were trying to build a midget race car 12" wheels were used. They must have had some knowledge of midget based on the mounting of the steering box and the radius rods. If you want you can buy fiberglass body components to make it look similar to a kurtis Kraft. Definitely make a raised front cowl toward the cockpit .

As a kid i had access to piles of Popular mechanics mags going back to before WW2 . They often had articles on how to build little dirt cars like this. And this looks to have been started to fit in with three quarter rules. I think the oldest mag i had ,had an article on building one using a Chev Four. A great engine to find would be an Essex Four ,those were the engine of choice for those who knew how good they were . Big cars sometimes used 1/2 a Hispano Suiza V8 aero engine.....V8 60 speed gear is far too expensive and always was, which is maybe why the car was never finished. Then again, a Simca Vedette V8 (French V860 ) might be a nice choice.

Building a set can be the cheapest if you have a scrap yard to source the parts, but you will spend a lot of time building them and for me the time outweighs the money I'd save... or do what I do.. put it off forever until you find a set for pennies at a swap meet or flea market haha. -Matt/ITG

The varity of engines was pretty staggering ,including evinrude outboard motors. NZ has a great vintage speedway thing going and drivers from NZ were racing in the US before WW2. Someone has started to build a speedway car. Very crude but basically what they often were 50 years ago. Though basically a useable thing. Needs a proper rear spring and 16" wheels with suitable tyres and run in second gear. So then needs a clip or chain to hold the gearbox in gear.
With those baby tyres I suspect they wanted to use top gear.

Thanks for the input. I agree with you for all points. I'd probably run an in-out gearbox if I was to make it into something. I think I know where a few are stashed in an old garage.... might need to make a visit..

When you're an old farm boy you have to use what's behind the Barn, pa will be unhappy if you use the new tractor for parts. I've seen quite a few contraptions like this in my day and time.

You should contact the Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley, NC. They love early home built stuff there.

It is very cool! I know you have many projects but this would be really neat to make a race car. Hang on to it and display it as is until such time you can start working on it. I would love to watch the videos.

That was my initial idea Roger. I need to dig up some Model A or 16" wires wheels this summer to put on it. Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG

Matt you got to strap a cinder block to your rear to make that front spring flex. Lol.

That's a killer idea. Would be neat to make it an old down and dirty dragster! Maybe add a square rollbar like they did "back in the day" haha. Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
