- In this video, I show you another way to fix your grass growing problem. When your soil or dirt is too hard, it can cause issues with the grass growing and thriving. This can primarily be caused by the ground being too hard. You may be able to help this grass growing problem by using gypsum, which can allow the water to flow better into your soil, especially when the problem is caused from too much salt on your lawn. Excessive salt can come from fertilizing and the composition of the water being applied to your lawn. See my overview of how I try and solve my dry and hard soil composition problem by applying gypsum in this video! Gypsum helps to loosen compacted soil, somewhat similar to aerating, which allows the roots of your grass to grow and provides other benefits such as adding calcium and reducing aluminum toxicity to your lawn.

Did the gypsum work? I live in Georgia and have severe compaction in my backyard which has killed a good portion of my lawn.
Hey Jason, my grass is emerald zoysia so it won't fully come around until it stays warm consistently, but I feel like it definitely helped. The clear distinction between the back area along the fence and the other part of the yard has disappeared.
Can we just use used gypsum boards (wall boards used in home construction)? They are made up of gypsum. Grind them up. Spread on lawn.

Is 8 months long enough for a follow up video yet? Can you try to search the lawn for yellow pellets ? Could you identify when they all finally dissolved?
That's what I'm saying. If this gypsum stuff doesn't show results in 8 months then it obviously doesn't work.
From my research it appears that if you have hard clay its best to invest in a couple applications of mechanical coring (aeration). This has the best long term benefit in terms of softening the soil to promote root growth and fertilizer absorption. Gypsum does't really work and is a waste of money and time.

I have to agree with you. And that's why this video disappoints me but I'm not giving him a thumbs down because I'm going to allow for his different grass-type and probably has different soil type where the product and may help.
In a fit of frustration and rage I put a ton of gypsum got my sister's clay front yard where every 3 to 6 years she has to replace it.
As far as I can tell all I did was Spike calcium numbers which is tying up the phosphorus; have not seen a difference softening the soil. In all Candor I didn't use the vendor he is pushing I use some other store bought one from Home Depot.
But just yesterday I unearth some deadside from when a plumber was here working on the sewer and I can't believe the hardpan underneath the sod; in fact as far as my flat shovel is concerned the hardpan is just as hard as the concrete sidewalk that's a few yards away. I have to use a narrow Spade to penetrate it.
Core aerator by hand I performed earlier this spring but buy is it labor-intensive. And the yard is so small that it really doesn't pay to rent the machine for $60 and then the hassle to bring it here and then bring it back to the store.
Clay sucks.

Many thanks for your answer. Unfortunately they're not shipping to Germany...Can I use a normal gypsum like the one they're using to build something or is that an other type of gypsum. In the german area they're not losening up the lawn with gypsum. More likely with sand or compost. Sooo confusing and there is no german seller which sells agriculturel gypsum.
