      Well, do it on purpose cause if you do it wrong and it gets right side up, no one will know, but if you get it right by being upside down, then you can say that you meant to do that and it'd be a success. It's a win-win.

    My film tutors always say the script is often a guideline and there's an "on-set magic" because everything changes immensely on the days of shooting like someone will improv a line or something didn't work and it turns out hilarious/for the better. But me being a DoP, I'm still very anal about my shots haha. Loved the episode jack!

    filmmaking is all about compromise, honestly all of my favourite things i've worked on are things where the ideas changed a lot and we had to adapt to things that happened on the shoots, it forces everyone to be extra creative and work harder so it usually makes things feel more natural and less planned

  • @Reidy48Pages
    @Reidy48Pages 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    This was really good timing, because I'm legit watching this a day after my band completed the recording of our first EP, and we had to start from scratch three seperate times, but if we had used the first recordings we did for it, it wouldn't have turned out anywhere near as good as the final recordings, so I relate a lot to this video. This is cool.. and deep, apparently.

  • @AliceKikyou
    @AliceKikyou 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    This was so relatable and comforting to me! It's good to know that this happens to more experienced as well. I recently directed my first ad for a school project, and so many things went wrong. We were shooting outside, and snow had melted at the place we were supposed to shoot, so we had to drag snow to the set. Then the generator didn't work and when it did... our huge Arri light had fried out during some other's shoot and we didn't have time to change it. So we had to shoot the entire thing without additional light. All while it was freezing outside. Can't say I didn't learn anything from it.

    Jack, this relates to me right now on a whole new level. I'm currently directing a short film I wrote and which I've worked solidly for the past 8 months doing as much pre production as possible, having everything planned to the key. I've essentially being doing a production managers job aswell. And everything was perfect until last Friday (a week before we began shooting) when my lead actress dropped out and my main location cancelled, (because they had another production wanting to shoot there that would pay them- low lame). This being a student short film, and basically no budget, meant I had to go with it and find somewhere else. I also had to re-audition for the lead female role, arrange rehearsals, do location reccys, and book a new main location in the space of a week. And as stressful as it all was, I'm so glad it happened because now I have an even better lead actress and an even more beautiful location. So yeah, good to know that things don't always go well for you either. Wait, that sounded bad. I want things to go right for you... I do. But just, good to relate to someone. Okay bye.

    this is honestly one of the first things we learnt in school (I do like a dance/drama/music school thing). We have all of these projects in smaller groups. the numbers of the groups vary from two to ten and maybe more sometimes. and for a period of time we were not allowed to say "no" to ideas and things. and we always, always had to try things out. which resulted in things taking a bit more time and effort than we thought, but most of the times, the product got better that the original thought.

    In September I started an HND in film and moving image & last week I directed my first film over two days which ended up in 20 or so hours of shooting. I found the whole experience insanely stressful as we were on a tight time schedule, had very few crew and I was running on very little sleep.
    Hearing about the issues you came across whilst filming gave me a lot of insight for my own film as I also had mega issues with weather/light continuity even though the majority of the shoot was done indoors (frickin british weather...)
    It's good to hear people like you talking about the side of filming where not everything looks perfect and turns out as intended. I mean, I'm still a complete amateur when it comes to filmmaking but I'm hoping one day I'll be able to make something great that I'm excited for people to see.

    Rolling with the punches!! As an aspiring filmmaker this was a great video on, as you say, adapting and facing challenges. I suppose with creative mediums like film, it is often very rare that the final outcome will be pinpoint exactly the same as your initial idea, but it's all about excepting and embracing that. Also, pretty cool series! Nice work!!

    That episode was brilliant.
    I agree, I laughed way harder than I would have in a pub than you would in a park.
    A park isn't funny, babies don't belong in pubs so yes, great change!
    Overall yes I agree, things go wrong and that's why risk assessments are important, plan A and plan B.
    If something breaks what do you do? If someone's ill what do you do?
    I agree and I can't wait to binge watch season 2!

    I'd say this video delivers a message about life, but conveyed through the film making process... I feel like art often does that...

    Must be kind of weird to be talking about "Jack and Dean" in the third person, as they aren't you but they are you.
    But I love this video. Getting a behind-the-scenes look at how you problem-solved while making something that I've already seen and was amazing is very interesting.

      The Phantasm Thanks! It's not as weird anymore, it's become very easy to separate the two.
