It's interesting to note that in the first example, when substituting 2 for X, the term -2^2 does not mean that -2 is squared =4. Because-2 is not in brackets the the minus sign applies to 2^2 = -4. I used to have trouble with this but an online video helped me out

I do have a question what do you do when you have a variable as the x value for example F(x^2)=x^2+2 would you mark it as 2x^4 +2 or could it be counted as x^4 +2 ? how would you apply the the given f(x) function ?

why is -2 squared = -4 instead of 4?
Our first problem has the opposite of two squared or negative two squared, not the square of negative two. In our first example, -2²; means -1 ● 2 ● 2 which equals -4. Squaring negative two is written as (-2)²; which means (-2)(-2) and equals 4. Thanks 4 watching!
