    Thanks for the post. My old AR270 just failed. I bought it used at a hamlets over 10 years ago, so it’s gotta be pushing 20 or more years old. Figure it’s time for a new one and this one looks good! Thanks!

    I highly recommend contacting Comet and ordering the 20-inch radials they make for their larger antennas. I was going to make my own, but took a shot and emailed their sales--the president of the company (wow!) emailed be back that they would be 18 bucks shipped. Threaded right in where the little shorties were before.

      Can you just go PL-259 on your coax directly to the connector on the antenna, or does it require you add that connector that has the grounding screws?

    • @jeffwilcox9987
      @jeffwilcox9987 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Norseman2 Mine is PL-259 direct to antenna. Some of the Comet antennas come with the choice of PL-259 or N-connector. The N-connector is technically better for water proofing and is rated for high frequency but, it’s not a big deal of the GP-3 as the antenna provides good water proofing by design and is is only rated for VHF and UHF. If you go to higher stuff, consider really good cable and N-Connectors.

    • @jeffwilcox9987
      @jeffwilcox9987 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Norseman2 Oh- to your question, there IS a mounting screw for grounding on the unit. It’s provided for in the design.

    • @Norseman2
      @Norseman2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeffwilcox9987 I mounted mine on a pole that is already grounded so I didn’t use that. I’m kind of a beginner (even though I’ve had my ticket almost 4 years) and just wanted to make sure that I didn’t need to use that piece. Thanks 🙏🏼

    Hey Brian , heard ya. I'm over hear in London , ky. Just getting started with ham 2m 70cm. I take my test on January 25th in Danville, ky. At 10am at the American Legion. I have a baofeng uv5r handheld and a QYT 980 plus 75w vhf 55w uhf. I purchased a DBJ-1 250w Ed Fong antenna. I'm about 1 mile south from Levi Jackson State Park. Hoping we can make contact after I pass my technicians license. Hoping you can teach me some things. I'm really not used to guy's giving their call sign so fast. They say it SO fast I can't understand what they're transmitting. Maybe you can give me a few pointers on that. Guessing you are somewhere close to Somerset. 73 for now and wish me luck on the test and the amateur radio hobby.

      Hey Daniel! Great to hear you taking your Tech test soon. Once you have your ticket, come join us on the nets and Simplex on Sunday & Tuesday. Levi Jackson will be a POTA activation for KY4CKP and I later this year as are several other parks. Stay in touch. As for speed of somone giving out a callsign, clear ennunciation of one's callsign is paramount as band conditions can vary widely. Something we all learn eventually. Stay in touch and join the club! FWIW: I use this antenna for Field Use (ARES drills and Charity events) and mount it to a 20 ft. guyed flagpole mast from Harbor Freight Tools.
    I connect it to my radio with LMR Class 1/2" Coax, and use a strain relief for the Coax just below the antenna mount.🖕🖕

    • @LCARAHAMRadio
      @LCARAHAMRadio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey VK1DON - This antenna works very well. Although Comet makes longer lengths with better gain, your results will vary given what is between you and the repeater. LCARA uses several different models from Comet and Diamond for repeater and personal use. We have some that are over 5 years old on towers that hold up very well. Getting the antennas high into the air is the best way to get good results. Good luck and thanks for watching!

      I'm about 22 miles from the repeater. I can hit it with a good HT antenna, but with the GP-3, it's loud and clear on low power. There are some hills between me and the antenna, but our antenna is on a nice high hill on a 100' tower.

    What is the distances between you and your correspondences ?

    • @LCARAHAMRadio
      @LCARAHAMRadio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ Панас Нетудихатко - anywhere from 7 to 10 miles in simplex. The terrain here in my area is very hilly, so it definitely helps to have this antenna up in the air to work our local Nets and specifically the simplex net which is radio to radio. Thanks for watching!

    • @user-rx5cb9cx6u
      @user-rx5cb9cx6u 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LCARAHAMRadio The problem with this type of antennas (with serial power of the elements) is that the main radiation is split into many small ones. In hilly terrain this may be good, but in normal flat terrain conditions this antenna would greatly lose to a folded dipole, for example. Best regards!

    Why did you not chose the GP-6

    • @LCARAHAMRadio
      @LCARAHAMRadio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mainly due to the length. The GP-3 is just shy of 6 feet which ships in one piece and works great for repeater and simplex use cases in my situation. The GP-6 is over 10 feet long and has better gain numbers but wouldn't benefit my station for the distances involved. Comet has many great products so one of their antennas will most operator's needs.

    • @jeffwilcox9987
      @jeffwilcox9987 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The GP-6 is a great antenna also. The GP-3 works well though and as mentioned, is a single piece and very low maintenance. And the numbers are good, quite good enough for many.
