I feel Gaia's theme meshes with the gameplay better. It feels like the mechanisms makes more sense. Having to convert a planet for your species makes more sense than having to make a marsh into a forest first. I also prefer the variable setup options and end game Scoring. Love both but I ended up selling TM.
8:36 ... Yeah, I keep saying "Terraforming Mars" constantly when I mean "Terra Mystica" also. I like Terra Mystica + expansion the same as Gaia Project. But that just means if Gaia Project comes out with an expansion it will push it ahead of Terra Mystica.
Yeah, but Gaia Project actually incorporates the tech tree (cult track in TM) better as part of the game. I just feel that it is an objectively better game (for other reasons, too).
Yeah Bryan, but between already having Terra Mystica + Expansion with a laser cut stained storage insert as well as laser cut player mat overlays to keep everything in place, and lukewarm reception toward having yet another Sci fi 4x theme type game with same Terra Mystica styled art, is it really still worth also getting Gaia Project?
Great overview. Honestly I am fairly disappointed in Gaia Project. I love TM and was hoping for something different... Not just a variable map and retheming which is what we got. Not to say it isn't great in a vacuum, but no real reason to play both when they are 95% the same game.
Completely disagree, Gaia Project offers a much more exciting and complex tech tree, giving players far more options. As well as this I like the factions a lot more than Terra Mystica as they are all very different where in TM they arent quite as unique.
1) Variable Scoring 2) Modular Board 3) Tech Trees Which Are Better Implemented Into The Gameplay 4) Introduction Of Gaiaforming - New Mechanic 5) Introduction Of A New Resource & Gameplay Elements (Tech Tree) Around That Element - QICs 6) Better 2 Player Game 7) Inclusion Of A Solo Game Using Automata What More Do You Want? I Cannot Honestly See How Anyone Would Not See That Gaia Project Is The Better Game. Unless You Want To Play With 5 Players. In That Case, Terra Mystica Is Better For You (But Gaia Project Is Still The Better Overall Game).
Terra mystica always feels more abstract to me. The tech track vs the "going up In red" track really is no contest. Gaia Project just has a way more thematic feel to me. For this reason, GP gets the win.
GP according to some is better than TM because of the tech track and better components. simple solution...upgrade TM tech track and improve its components. then TM becomes the obvious choice.
I wish this was better planned out while presenting. Should of actually set up all the pieces to see how it looks better. Grabbing a plastic bag of components and showing them through a bag was not a good idea. Should of planned out what you wanted to talk about and lay out the components. Good effort, better planning would of come out with a better video and better comparison.
Why do people talk about the research tracks like it's something new and amazing. It's already available in TM! Terraforming and range is on the faction boards. More income is on the favor tiles. And more knowledge income is basically priests. GP has less interaction and are more forgiving. And you can't learn the best strategies for the factions as the map always changing. It should pay of to play the same game over and over. So no thanks, i stick with TM.
I wondered wtf people were saying too, so I went back and squinted...apparently GP got rid of workers and gold etc and just has a track to move along to keep track of it, which is kind of nice, you don't NEED cubes in front of you to have fun, especially when the cubes are just monies.
I believe the themes are irrelevant for purpose of choice, because the mechanics are the big selling point. Gaia is mechanically superior, but some people still enjoy TM because it allows for a more aggressive play style and/or can be played in 5 ppl
TM looks way better imho and have wooden pieces. This games are nearly the same so the way they look is pushing me in TM direction. Sorry for my english :P
Bryan what’s up with the diet coke on the counter. As a diet coke diva, that’s sacrilegious. You need to treat your soda like a fine wine. Chilled to the proper temperature to retain the CO2.
Seen the vídeo on how Gaia project is and owning Terra Mystica.. it seems that Gaia is more prone to analisis paralisis with the tech three and youre going to choose many times in a game. The favors are like the tech but you will have like max 2 or 3 in a game and you can deny them for other players, an euroish type of strategy). Seems like Gaia has less interaction, the temple chart feels is like a race. Gaia strategy complexity seems more "in your face" and TM is more subtle mixing oportunity and player direct and indirect interaction.
The artwork on the player boards and technology track in Gaia are ugly as sin. TM wins the beauty contest hands down. Also since Gaia's rule set are 100% TM + 10% extra stuff, I fail to see how its easier to teach. But either way Gaia really is just TM in space, with a sprinkle of complexity, so you don't go wrong with either :)
For me, I love Terra Mystica and DO NOT like Gaia Project. I played Gaia Project first in the fall and really struggled with it. Maybe I had a bad teacher or just a bad experience. A hunch made me buy Terra Mystica at a convention last week and I LOVE IT. I found the theme easier to follow, it was smoother, faster, and so much easier to learn. I’ve since watched a few videos about Gaia Project and my opinion of that game hasn’t changed and I have no desire to play it again. I’ll stick with Terra Mystica.

I dont mind as I love Terraforming but you have a
point

Great review, but Terra Mystica is beautiful. I found Gaia Project looked like a prototype
Yeah but big props in him being able to say Gaia Project was a beautiful game with a straight face. He had me rolling in the floor with that one.
Exactly. The GP board is hideous. Still probably the better game, but not the prettier one.
The brown score track is the ugliest thing in GP. Why not have it grey like everything else.

Yes
good discussion, i'm liking what i'm seeing from gaia

Always Play The Game yeah that’s the weird one to me. They are good alternates if you have to buy one. I do love the research track in GP though.

Just found your videos Bryan, you have some seriously great content. Really enjoy the way you explain things. Thanks!
Austin Hernandez hey thanks so much!

TM's tight, tight, TIGHT economy leaves my brain fried. I'm looking forward to Clans handing me a ton of money on Turn one and letting me go nuts.
This is what makes TM better than GP.

I wish Gaia Project had wooden pieces 😞
I'm way more into Fantasy but that all doesn't matter if you mostly play 2-players. Gaia is the only game that works with two.
Wow! What a great comparison.

You make a lot of mistakes. Saying Terra Mystica takes the belt when you just said a second ago you prefer Gaia Project... lol
Stefan Lopuszanski it was really hard to keep it straight watching it back I could see the internal struggle in real time lol!
we can like more one game and the other be a better game!! you dont make a point!
Clans of Caledonia FTW !!! :-D
Aliens vs Predator? Humans FTW!!
waynez78 haha just a joke ;-) Because this one is also inspired by Terra Mystica and I know some people prefer It than Gaia Project. Me included :-D
Ah i see, I yet to play clans or gaia myself.
You dont have to stress through the review. You stumble on your own words. Take your time and slow down. You already have our attention 👍

greg rawls I cant believe I didn’t see this until now. Literally laughing out loud.
