    This was my childhood playground during 1950s-60s when it was closed and overgrown pathways just added to the awe and fascination. Climbing the locked gates was rewarded by hours of exploration during school holidays. It was my ‘Secret Garden’ - inspired by reading the Frances Hodgson Burnett book in junior school. What an adventure and totally captivating. The wildlife, flowers and atmosphere were such a joy. Thanks for sharing this lovely memory ❤️👍🏾

      it seems the youth of Stokey used to do this, me and my m8's where in the 80's. You had Abney and Clissold Park, used to stay till it was dark, when all the gates where closed, and had to find a good wall to climb

    This cemetery is "dying" from gross neglect. How wonderful London has decided to restore this hallowed ground to it's former beauty.
    Thank you !!!!

      Yes, Abney is one I hadn't heard of but , as it's the nearest to E4 where my daughter's live I shall be heading there soon . So far I've had a few walks in Chingford Mount looking for the grave of my half cousin & got a huge surprise when I found where his headstone had been erected in 1968...gone now ! However, there were several plots, together, absolutely covered in flowers, letters (fan letters as it turned out) ...they were the graves of the Kray twins , their family and, heartbreakingly , Frances , Reggie's wife...just shows you how much history must be held in all London cemeteries 😮

    • @davidrenton
      @davidrenton 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      compared to the 80's, a lot of work has been done and it's not neglect, it's been allowed to grow wild and it's give it so much character, plenty of small paths criss cross it , where you can find solitude with just birds, squirrels and the trees.

  • @kirstenfoster8266
    @kirstenfoster8266 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Hi all. I appreciate at first sight Abney can seem 'uncared for'. However it is NOT being 'restored to its former glory'. It is already a glorious, well loved and managed nature reserve (continuing its original purpose as a park and green space). The greenery including (especially) the ivy and other undergrowth covering graves is an incredibly valuable habitat for all kinds of wildlife from bugs to birds. There is NO BATTLE with nature - the site is nature's legally protected home. The restoration work is to the listed former office/workshop buildings at the High St entrance and the funeral chapel (not consecrated, purely a space for funeral ceremonies) at the centre, and also involves the creation of a cafe, office/visitors centre and classroom near the high st entrance. However, the rest of the site will be maintained as a rich green space and legally protected nature reserve. Thanks for appreciating the unique beauty of this space for all life human and non-human!

    • @michaeldillon3113
      @michaeldillon3113 ปีที่แล้ว

      In town's like the one I live where so many habitats are either lost or in the process of being destroyed our cemetery is a rare area of biodiversity ( as well as a haven of peace for the living as well as the dead ) . ✌️

    This cemetery is the perfect mix of faded grandeur with an air of mystery and magic, lots of winding pathways leading to secret places overgrown with beautiful vines and wildflowers. So much nicer than pristine headstone poking out of a perfectly manicured patch of grass. Thank you for a wonderful tour of this beautiful place🌸 🌳 🪦

    Lovely! Just so lovely! Not only the tour of this beautiful old cemetery, but to hear that wonderful lilting voice of my favorite tour guide, Sinead. Lady, I believe I could listen to you read an encyclopedia and it would be entertaining just to hear that soft, soothing, Irish lilt. I am a chronic insomniac and you just don’t know how many nights the sound of your beautiful voice has been a lullaby to ease me off into sleep. It works as nothing else does. I always look for you especially when new videos have been posted. I love the others as well, but you just have that something a little extra. Prayers that life is treating you well! @@silverstars7882 Most of the old pubs are still here, the Old Shillelagh, the Red Lion, the Rose and Crown, Church St is mainly restaurants, pubs, little cafes, a violin shop, bike shop and it still has the unique feel, the only 'brand' shop is Nandos, which replaced the old Vortex Jazz club, a lot of small independent business's, craft,toy,clothes,green grocers shops, even a posh butcher and health food supermarket. It's become quite posh and houses are very expensive.
      the biggest shock is the 106 bus is reliable, and there are more bus routes not just the classic 73.

    Great stuff Sinead, factual and very interesting. It's a shame so many of the headstones are overgrown with ivy and plants but I understand it would be an impossible task for a gardener to cut all that back continually! Loved your Jack The Ripper tour too -though I regret having looked at that colourised final photo -now burnt into my memory! Ah well, it's not like you didn't warn us -I can't "unsee" it now! You have the voice and accent I could listen to for days! Thank you! 😊

      Now quite expensive to visit at around £16 and over £40 for a family. English Heritage ☺Went there in 1992 and it was open, peaceful and atmospheric, just a little shop there. We went down to Merlin's Cave and the beach, and up to the ruins. There were steep slopes, sheer drops and uneven surfaces but it was all free and very memorable.

    Beautiful tour. In recent years, as I have worked on family genealogy, I've gotten intrigued with cemeteries. During the quarantine, a friend and I would take short trips out into the countryside near where we live with a cup of coffee. We did it just to get out of the house but ended up stopping at cemeteries. Oddly, in several I found graves of people I had known but never knew where they were buried. In one, we found a grave of a person who'd died in the late 1800's. It had one of those Victorian fences around it and the poor plot was over grown with thorny cat brier. We went home and got tools and cleaned it up. We drive by every now and then to make sure it is still clear. The cemetery itself is mowed by someone but no one had given this grave any care.

    I think the restoration is very timely. I read that they were going to make it very special. Wonderful tour as always Sinead. What I find interesting is that some of the monuments you were showing (such as the cut pillar) and some of the urns with the draped lace edged cloths, the crosses and flower designs - these exact designs are also found decorating the graves in Australia (same time period). I didn't notice it as much in the last cemetery tours, but Abney Cemetery seems to have many. It would be lovely to revisit this cemetery when the restoration is complete. Thankyou Sinead - I always enjoy your cemetery tours. 💖💖

    I love that cemetery. If I ever get to London I want to spend some time there. It's so peaceful and spiritual, as you say. So very pleasant. I probably wouldn't feel that way at night but during the day it's lovely. Thanks for the tour! Hello from Maryland.
