Although I may never visit Russia, I found your videos of Kaliningrad and Vladivostok to be really fascinating. While watching the Kaliningrad videos, I realized that it was Königsberg; the math puzzle I used to study when I was a child was the Seven Bridges of Königsberg and to see it, albeit briefly, almost makes me want to visit. Keep up the good work and showing the kinder side of Russia. If anyone gets something out of these kind of videos, it's that people are different, but people are also the same everywhere. - By the way, if you visit Philly, come to King of Prussia... fair warning, it is nothing like Prussia.

I hope Kaliningrad keeps and expands its tram system. The UK made the mistake of dismantling most of its tram systems back in the '50s and '60s and now many (such as Sheffield, Edinburgh and Nottingham) are having to be rebuilt.
They did decide to keep and restore it recently, they are in the process of renovating the fleet with the new Russian-made vehicles and also plan on restoring some old routes. What Kaliningrad did with its tram in 2000s was nothing short of atrocity, the previous administration did not care about public transport one single bit.
Nottingham has a few tram lines still but there's no evidence of historic rolling stock or stops sadly, same with the dismantling of trolleybuses. Honestly britian with things like trams and trolleybuses would make this place feel more European rather than the dreary diesel arriva buses and dull roads
Thanks for sharing. As a local it's really nice to see your hometown from a different point of view. City has its cons and pros but... like everything does. Once again - amazing video, keep on going!
"Hometown" ha ha Tell me about Grandpa Fred then and how he used to go to school there and his folks before him. You can live there but don't pretend the city to be something it isn't. It's colonial thus you won't ever be a native or able to conclusively call it home. You can only feel at home. Your best shot is to learn Lithuanian and study Ballistic and go from there to learn Balto Prussian even tho it's pretty much extinct - then you would have to marry a balto-prus person - THEN maybe u get to call.the place ur actual home. Otherwise it's the place is parents or grandparents originally came from.
My grandmother was forced to flee from Königsberg after WW2. She's told me so many, many gruesome stories about what happened there and on her way to Germany. Honestly, it's so weird to actually see footage of how her hometown looks like now. I'm glad it's such a lively place today.
My motherland. Film-story. Very carefully and lovingly filmed. No politics, just facts. You can talk endlessly about the city. It is very nice to see how much has been restored and how much has been rebuilt. How they treat the monuments with care. Rebuilt the Synagogue, which was simply destroyed by the Nazis. People of different nationalities live here and they have no problems between them. I love to come back here again and again. Here are the graves of my parents, relatives, friends. My heart is here.
Finally a good video about Kaliningrad in english, thank you! Views from drone and interview with Vladimir are excellent (he knows the city surprisingly well, it's not so common for locals). I was in the same festival on the Kneiphof island that sunday =)) p.s. the oldest building in the city is Juditter Kirche (1276) and not the Königsberg Cathedral as many think.

It's really interesting to see how respectful the Russians who live there today are to the German heritage, there appears to be very little hatred between Germany and Russia today. Sadly in Britain we are encouraged to hate both peoples, it's very irrational and I hope for peace. This documentary was very enlightening and valuable, thank you!
Its because british on average are short and obese and ugly and their food is horrible so most british eat out indian or kebabs from middle east. such a shame what WW2 did to this city. Imagine visiting old prussian cities like historic Köningsberg in 2021 with the old centre and castle and such...would have been amazing!
Luckily a lot of original architecture (by the standards of what you'd expect from USSR) is preserved and in recent times even restored. The biggest shame they did not preserve the Royal Castle but at least the Cathedral is in good shape!
I invite you to Gdańsk, Poland. And make a comparison: Gdańsk vs Kaliningrad. Gdańsk was destroyed during the war, just like Konigsberg. After the war, German residents left for Germany, and Poles came to replace them. And the Poles rebuilt Gdańsk. And the Russians did not rebuild Königsberg, but built Kaliningrad.
Typical explanation of the current situation of the city by the Russians. I am a Pole - after the Germans we got 2 large centers - Wocław and Szczecin, and 15 cities with a population of over 100,000. Wrocław was destroyed between 70-80% - Szczecin in 70% and the rest of these cities were destroyed in the urban substance in the range of 30-95%. Now take a look at what Polish cities look like. Built - restored - they were restored to their former shape - even though we had no money and our capital was destroyed in 95%. We did it in parallel. Of course, a significant percentage of it could not be restored - it was mainly due to the fact that we had over the heads of communists who did not like the restoration of German monuments and often their opinion was final. Exactly - now let's look at Kalilingrad. The city was destroyed no more than the Polish one - and what does it look like now? The only thing that was left there was the cathedral on the island and a few individual objects scattered all over the city. THIS NOT ALLIAN BOMBARDINGS led to the present appearance of the city - but the Soviet government which pursued a deliberate policy of removing everything German. These are facts and stop blaming others - because then you only confirm the stereotypes about you. Your government has led to the situation that now Konigsberg, instead of the pearl of the Baltic, on a par with Gdańsk, has become a nasty communist reminder of the USSR's policy.
It's such a beautiful city! Being a medical student and studying in kaliningrad since 2 years is elite. I've been to all the places shown in the video including the Gustav Grossman's cafe it's such an aesthetic place! I simply love the city!!
Slava you really have a wonderful talent. Not only for capturing natural, architectural and historical beauty and wonders, but also all importantly that of anthropology. The golden thread of humanity which weaves people to places where they live. You remind me of Frederick Skavlan from Norge who is the world's best interviewer. You want to learn something about a public figure or celebrity, you watch his interview of them because he lets his guest speak, not his ego. I love when you speak to locals because that's when I learn the most. I also love Lena's accompaniment with you on your travel accounts. She is smart and elegant but importantly real and humanistic as are your mum and sis too. I particularly loved and learnt much on this video and will be making a beeline here as an easy to travel, microcosm of greater Russia. Spasiba from your friend in Australia. Ps your editing and drone images are phenomenal too. Truly brilliance all around.

Well, the rest of the world keeps really appalling memories of what your great-grandparents did... Concentration camps, systematic killings of Slavs, Jews, Romas and others. Killing some of your own people too just because they were communists, Jehovah witnesses, gays, handicaps or simple because they had a brain and did not follow Hitler to hell....Considering that most of the people voted for Hitler in that city in 1933, even after they knew what kind of monster he was since they have read Miene Kampt. I am so glad that this city belongs to Russia now. Of course, your grandma is innocent , I guess she was just a little girl during the war.

Really interesting to see the differences in architecture between German and Russian in Kaliningrad My grandfather grew up there and missed his home all his life since they had to leave the area when WW2 ended. But in his garage he always had a big map from Soviet time of the " Калининградская область". As a child i tried to read the russian names but later i was able to read them right and then i called the Russian name to my grandpa and he translated me to the former german name of the town or village. I was reading Черняховск (Chernyahovsk) and he answered "Insterburg, there was my home" By the way, my grandpa always liked the former Soviet Union and Russians of course, no matter what happened in history.
I lived there (Черняховск), went to a Soviet school (former german cathedral), that city almost survived WW2 and you can still find a lot of germans legacy there, while Kaliningrad was seriously destroyed of course, compared to the movie from 1938. I hope at some time germans will work together with russians in this region to recover some of the currently ruined castles , this is very historical land.
@@bubu4951конечно, это неудивительно. Он увидел человечность. Ведь СССР не поступил с населением побежденной стороны так, как поступили бы они. I read very strange comments about the fact that this is a German city. All Germans were deported from this city, the Russians recaptured this city from the Nazis. This city was a real Nazi fortress; no one could punish this city; only the Russians succeeded. An incredible number of losses of Russian soldiers, the city was completely destroyed. It was symbolically renamed and populated by Russian people; it was as if the city was built from scratch.

Thank you for showing my favorite city. I haven't been there for 5 years. Former Königsberg is the hometown of my mother.
Thank you
Also have distant relatives from there. Shame it is no more.

He didn't even notice there are trolley buses; buses driving on electricity.
"Hometown" ha ha
Tell me about Grandpa Fred then and how he used to go to school there and his folks before him.
Otherwise it's the place is parents or grandparents originally came from.

such a shame what WW2 did to this city. Imagine visiting old prussian cities like historic Köningsberg in 2021 with the old centre and castle and such...would have been amazing!
Most of German cities are like that - completely destroyed during WW2 and rebuilt after.
TUWANGSTE was first name of the city before MURDERERS from West came here 800 years ago

Really interesting to see the differences in architecture between German and Russian in Kaliningrad
My grandfather grew up there and missed his home all his life since they had to leave the area when WW2 ended.
But in his garage he always had a big map from Soviet time of the "
Калининградская область". As a child i tried to read the russian names but later i was able to read them right and then i called the Russian name to my grandpa and he translated me to the former german name of the town or village. I was reading Черняховск (Chernyahovsk) and he answered "Insterburg, there was my home"
By the way, my grandpa always liked the former Soviet Union and Russians of course, no matter what happened in history.
