Bradley was an extremely talented musician. His voice was his greatest gift. Sublime’s music is timeless and they spawned a generation of bands that are good, but not sublime. RIP Bradley we still miss you.
Yeah man, I didn’t get into them until early 97 so I missed ever seeing my favorite band of all time play. Bittersweet is all I can say. All these years later I’m still intrigued by the music and the story.
A band that formed naturally with similar music tastes, paired with heart, and a do it yourself mentality. Punk at heart with other musical tastes mixed in, they came about when all types of genres were popular unlike today.
This was beautiful work man, very professional and well thought out. believe it or now Brad Nowell was the only one out of all the greats to have his IQ officially measured. Even by age 11 years old his IQ was 142 on paper, his parents enrolled him in a class called M.G.M. Mentally Gifted Minors in Orange County CA and to even be eligible for the class you had to have an IQ over 140. Which means by age 25 he was most likely well over 160 genius aptitude. I don't think Cobain or any of the other greats actually have that labeled on paper through their life.
@@22StoneProductions Welcome and thank for putting out a great video on Sublime it was super interesting. Yes, that fact about Nowell's IQ can be found in the autobiography book "Crazy Fool". In there his teacher in the MGM class briefly talks about him. Guy was a certified Genius playing in a different league. In my opinion he's the most underrated artist of all time. There are very few singer/guitar players who can do what he does. He is his own style, there was never anybody ever like him.
@@Spider-yr6xhthat band disbanded around 2002ish i think. It was called Eyes Adrift and consisted of Krist Novoselic from Nirvana on bass, Bud Gaugh from Sublime on drums, and Curt Kirkwood from the Meat Puppets on guitar and vocals. The only released one album before disbanding, although it sounds nothing like either Nirvana or Sublime.
You should take another listen to how you pronounce "Santeria". He says it clearly in the first line of the song, if you've ever heard it. Is this an AI narrating a typo?
I think sublime appeals to a lot of people because they were very honest and upbeat people. They were fat, out of shape, and didn’t try to be something they weren’t. Most bands including grunge bands let their ego get the best of them. They weren’t mtv material and people could relate to them personally
Sorry, but this would be more impressive if you pronounced his last name and "Santeria" correctly. Also, I don't even get the comparison with Nirvana. Brad was definitely more talented than Kurt Cobain, and I don't know anyone who would argue that.
Great vid man! i agree with most of what u said, but there is something i think ur completely wrong on. Nirvana was great and Kurt was brilliant no doubt, however i do think they are one of the most overrated bands of all time and Bradley was definitely more brilliant than Kurt despite never getting remotely the credit and praise that rained down of Just and Nirvana over their career. That's no shade of Kurt whatsoever, but Brad was simply just that great! Sublime was a much more unique and revolutionary band that took with a significantly more eclectic sound with elements from many different genre's and on the whole went far beyond the label of ska, in fact it was more so reggae-rock with ska, hip-hop, punk, and jam-band elements thrown in. Even just looking at the genre of grunge back then, i don't even think that were the best grunge band, i think both Alice and Chains as well as Pearl Jam were better bands. With the combo Layne's vocals, Star's Bass, Jerry phenomenal guitar riffs, and finally Jerry's, (and to a lesser extent Layne's), brilliant song-writing chops, AIC were/are the best grunge act of all time imo. Nirvana simply didn't grow/progress as a band over their career to the degree that AIC did, and Layne's aforementioned vocals were on a whole other level than Kurt's. I know all art analysis is 100% subjective, so to each his or her own - these are just my opinions. Though both Sublime and AIC eventually saw massive success, neither saw as much when compared to many of their peers. Nowadays they are two of the most under-appreciated groups of that era and are two of the greatest bands of the 90's - alongside the likes of Tool, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Oasis, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, STP, and Korn, (there's prolly more that i just can't think of off the top of my head).
@@22StoneProductions Like i said before, when it comes to critiquing music it's very subjective. So me saying you were wrong isn't accurate, i just happen to have slightly different tastes from you. Regardless - great vid man, i love vids about bands from the 90's. I cant believe that those bands are considered oldies almost, i i still remember people back then bashing many different genres for "ruining rock", whether it was metal fans saying that about Grunge, or Grunge Now they are all considered classic by most which is funny to me
I love Sublime, pretty close to being my favorite music out of all, but its funny because i've heard the same thing about sublime a few times, that they are/were highly overrated. Just proves even more that it IS all subjective, just comes down to personal tastes is all.
Very well put together man.. sublime is my fav of all time . This is great.
Really appreciate that, Anthony! Brad was a musical genius.
@@22StoneProductions indeed he was.
@@22StoneProductions yes!!
I just got into this band in 2022, and they have easily become one of the most fascinating groups I’ve stumbled across
still pretty underrated to this day
Same
you forgot to mention that he spoke spanish and brought the Hispanic, Black, White community together with his talent
Very true
what about asians
Putting my tin foil hat on, this is why he was given the "John Lennon treatment".

Sucks that he was taken so soon. Would have definitely been around the music scene for a while.

I love that last pic of Brad. He’s surrounded by what he loved most, his baby, his dog and his guitar.
🙏
Lol I thought the same exact thing
Very underrated band, changed my life

Wow, thanks for that nugget TA! It definitely showed in his work.
That’s super fascinating.

His ability to recall inspiration from hit songs, of various genres, into his lyrics further proves his genius, and genuine love for music.
Very well done, I learnt a lot about Sublime thanks to this video!
great to hear! thanks for checking us out
well done video homie.
Much appreciated!
He was way more of a genius than Cobain 🤣🤣 Cobain stole a ton of his songs and his entire persona from another guy named kurt aka the meat puppets
Wow never saw the similarity between Sublime and Nirvana. That would make for an interesting cover band. A combination of both that is.
dude, id pay to see that
There actually is a band out there similar to that. It features a sublime and nirvana member with a new front man

great observation, def everyday men
In short they were truly the definition of punk rockers
What intro song is that?
Boss DJ. It's on their robbin' the hood album. It's a really great sublime track
I'm sure it's a good buzz and all, but fuck heroin.

Beautiful analysis, Jesse. Nirvana's peak was legendary but their range was definitely rivaled and/or surpassed by many bands during that era.
