    Wow I never thought they’d perform this song ever again after their 1988-1989 tour to promote Chicago 19. I’ve always felt this was Jason’s signature song and since he became the lead tenor singer plus this song was a respective hit in itself, he deserved to have this song to shine too. Sometimes I think this band performs way too many 70s songs and this arrangement I like with how the somehow fit the horns in it cuz I know that’s often a complaint Pankow and Loughnane say about the 80’s era of their music. Also, it’s a great song.

    • @lamarravery4094
      @lamarravery4094 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pankow and Loughnane hated the synthesizers, it replaced their instrument playing, they probably felt they weren't really a part of the band during those yrs.

      @@lamarravery4094 You’re right. That’s exactly what they felt. They called it ‘The hornless years”. Even though they were used much more towards the 2nd half of the 80s, when Foster stopped producing their music and Peter left. Honestly I think Peter was also open to the no horns approach by that point because he didn’t fight for the horns to stay either. I kinda think Loughnane and Pankow, being so outspoken about the band’s history, wished he did, given that he and Foster got so close during that time. Personally I like the band’s 80s stuff way more than their 60s and 70s stuff in general. You’d never think a young black guy from Harlem would love Chicago but my Uncle Leon was a huge fan of them, especially since he played 5 instruments fluently (The Saxophone, Horn, Electric Bass, Piano, and Drums). He loved their instrument usage from the 60s and 70s which is his era. I’d listen to them a lot growing up whenever I’d visit him at his apartment in the building half a mile down the way from mine in the projects. Grateful for him for it. He’s hugely what influenced me to embrace music too. I play bass, guitar, and sing baritone/bass.

      @@alonzotanner1226 I grew up in the 80s so I got into their 80s stuff, then I backtracked and listened to their 70s music. Both are good, hard to believe they're the same band. The only thing that's constant is Cetera's sweet vocals and then he left. I welcomed the return of the horns on their 19 and twenty1 albums. But good music has no racial boundaries.

      @@alonzotanner1226 Alonzo, I'm black and I'm old enough to remember when Chicago started they didn't put out their first album "Chicago Transit Authority " until 1969. So actually they were a band of the 70s and early 80s those two decades were very kind to classic rock groups before Vh1 and MTV existed . But I just wanted to say Chicago has a LOT of black fans. I had the cassette to "Hot Streets" the first album after Terry Kath died and it came out in 1978 but I didn't buy it till 1985 the year Peter Cetera left the band . One day, I was playing it in my car and a black student (I went back to college) saw the cassette picked it up and though there was 7 guys on the cover of the cassette, the guy instantly recognized and named Peter Cetera. Most people knew the songs but didn't know who they were by name. I actually knew all of them by name but didn't buy all the albums as they came out till years later. But Chicago has a variety of fans so we're not unique. But Peter Cetera most people black, white, green or purple. They know that voice and they know he who is and I wasn't surprised he was in the band for 18 years. The people that came in after him, was actually when quite a few people quit listening to Chicago, some did reject listening to anything without Cetera on it, that's the truth. I listened to Cetera or Chicago post Cetera it didn't bother me, it was all good music.

    • @alonzotanner1226
      @alonzotanner1226 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@waltersimmons946 Well actually I'm black and I was born in the next generation, maybe two generations after (Born in the mid-1980s) and I still was very much aware of this group's greatness. Coming up in Harlem, I was surrounded by stuff my parents listened to (Like Sly Stone, Ashford & Simpson, James Ingram, Patti LaBelle, Switch, Shalamar, etc) and my older cousins who were into the hip stuff in the late 80s, early 90s (New Edition, Troop, Riff, Bell Biv DeVoe, Shai, Bobby Brown, etc) but I was one of the few in my family who actually liked rock and classic rock (Aka "White Music") of all eras. I liked Dion and Belmonts, Queen, and of course, Chicago. But when I was coming up, I would hear a lot of Chicago 16, 17, and 18 on the radio. Yes, I preferred Cetera's voice to Scheff's and I liked even the 70s stuff, but sometimes the 70s stuff sounded so one-tracked to me. Too much horn sounds lol. I know the 3 guys hated the "hornless years" but I loved it. It was more to the point, catchier, and the effects were so much better. Plus the material better imo. Oddly enough I didn't catch any business for loving this music but I still do. That's why I said this song (Even though led by Scheff, not Cetera) is one of my favorites. I think Chicago 18 was their last really good album, personally. 19 had some gems but 18 was the best.

    To me, the evolution of Chicago has been some kind of well managed, eventhough we all would like to see the original band reunited, I think we should appreciate each stage (of the 5) as a very unique one. late 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000. The most important thing here (I guess)is that the band has somekind of DEEP ROOTS that have been maintining these guys alive and unified for so long such as 4 decades.

      Just realized I am replying to a 16 year old comment but hey, that's the power of the internet. No comment ever dies.
      I may be a lone wolf with my opinion but this live performance REALLY exposes the limitations of Jason's vocals. David Foster really pulled off some studio magic by making Jason sound so good on the 18 record. However, in a live setting, poor Jason really struggles to hit those high notes. His voice is also very "thin" and lacks the power and richness of Cetera in his prime. This is a fabulous song but man, I would have paid some mucho deneiros to have heard a studio version with Cetera on vocals. Foster did manage to make Jason sound pretty close to Cetera on the album but I would have preferred to hear the real thing. To this day, I have never heard a live version of this song that even comes close to the studio version.
      Contrary to some of the comments, the horns are not the problem. Even a fly could have overpowered Jason's vocals here. Chicago threw this song out of their set many many years ago (long before Jason left the band) and now I understand why. I remember Jimmy commenting years ago on Jason singing "You Come to My Senses" as him sounding like someone was squeezing his balls (referring to the Arsenio Hall performance). That same person was likely squeezing them during this performance.

    • @waltersimmons946
      @waltersimmons946 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@beegee1323You are correct. I'd add that Jason's falsetto on the upper high parts is what sounds quite weak. I heard Peter Beckett in the band PLAYER (known for Baby Come back) sing a song during a concert . He was singing in falsetto on the verses of I JUST WANNA BE WITH YOU and he was coming out quite strong. Jason and Bill needed those mics 🎤 turned up but live music 🎶 is still never perfect. Just saying.

    • @beegee1323
      @beegee1323 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@waltersimmons946100% agree! Live music is never perfect, nor should it be. It’s those live nuances that people pay big bucks for live when they can just listen to the record for free. HOWEVER, the foundation (ie the voice) has to be there for a decent if imperfect live performance. This song is waaaay out of Jason’s range. He just doesn’t have the goods to do it justice. On other mid range tunes, I’ve seen him deliver outstanding vocals live. For example, he does fine singing Hard Habit To Break. But as you say, anything requiring any amount of falsetto makes him sound like a dying cat.
      Having said the above, Jason is an outstanding human, very humble and an overall good singer. Champlin recently said that while in Chicago, Jason was always a bit pitchy. Since he left the band, he sounds much better.

    Ofcourse they can still play it by memory. First off the song is incredibly easy for the horn section. it's a few blats and runs. These guys probably still have songs memorised from high school and JR. high marchign band. Considering the amount of tiems they've done this material ... yeah it's still memorised, no they don't need charts, they could literaly play this stuff in thier sleep. Actually the sax player I think IS ASLEEP. he still sounds great

    this version is actually better than the recorded version. more horns in the arrangements to make the song less schmaltzy in the original's very 80s production with its synthesizers.

    Robert Lamm looks like he'd rather be playing something like "What's This World Coming To" rather than this dross. He was terribly underused from 1982 until quite recently.

    Horns sound awful on this and Jason, well, not his finest effort to say it nicely. I wonder if this was the last tour they staged this song with the live band? Seems like I have only ever heard Jason singing this by himself from the piano since about 2000. Such a great song, wish they'd treat it with more respect.
