Ha! Well said Elliot. I have a lot of Zombies in my design classes that I teach at Wayne State for Industrial Design. There are only a few that are awake and put in the time to learn, absorb, and practice what they are taught. There are always late bloomers and exceptions, but for the most part, they just don't put forth the effort to make a commitment to absorb and seek out any additional information, or to practice and explore beyond the minimum of what is required to do the work that is needed. Glad to hear of other designers sharing their experience about their students and striving for curiosity and excellence in their field of expertise.
Good tips on the culture. I’m in school and I also joined some 24/7 online art communities. It helps a little to share my personal work with those people.
Try skillshare… honestly it can be great training. (I’m not shilling… try it you get 3 months free if u use the code in the description- I genuinely think shit like that can help)
Thanks you Eliot! You're correct about the zombie state people fall into at school. I don't recall but i was told by classsmates after graduating that most of the time they saw me sleeping in class. Just trying to get through instead of enjoying knowledge. Think school doesn't teach you this.
Wow this is what iv been looking for in a channel ! thank you! Iv been recently wanting to get serious with my art&life thank you for the inspiring info!
I'm a junior in college, but I have social anxiety and no friends. Compared to my peers, I feel like I've learnt nothing. I'm still clueless about a lot of things and feel like I'm not a good graphic designer. That's why I procrastinate a lot and sometimes don't even hang in assignments. I really hope there's a solution for me out there.
I think a really important component of learning a new thing is to be passionate and excited about that thing. If that's the case, then the study and the work becomes easy, it doesn't feel like work. And you find yourself tinkering with these problems on weekends, in the shower, in your dreams. It's difficult (maybe impossible) to acquire true mastery of something if you don't already have that obsession, like a small droplet of madness in the process.
Your videos are very educative and your design works look great. Can you do some videos where you show us on example how to do some things from the begging? To show us the process itself in action.
Every time you meet that blank canvas, man, even if you replicated other designs.. it's always hard to come up with something that feels solid from scratch...
I live in a country where nobody speaks my language, on the other end of the world from American time zones. In person options are completely off the table. Are there good recommendations for fully online options for a feedback loop when you have no former connections? Some kind of discord group seems like the perfect solution.
is there nobody else doing good stuff on studio practice for fine art? Discursive stuff, not just artist documentaries giving me studio envy. Watching the hell out of this excellent channel but need more... the algorithm is serving more design but not a lot of fine art.
Have you seen Jakedontdraw? He doesn't come off as professional as this man but he has his own course, he works with many great painters and he has a server full of references for figure drawing

Hey hey… I’ve been there (and I was a Zombie - early - so I should know 😄)
I wish I had this advice when I was in undergraduate school . That was 10 years ago!
Me too!
I love it. This is like a punchy distillation of the long form series I am doing on what my basic design class is and why the structure is helpful.
This channel is my design school thank you Elliot 🙏🏽

How would you go about finding one of these art communities to join?
@@Impenetrable_Walls_of_HeavenI second that where do you look?

You're putting your soul in this and it's palpable.
We love you for it.
You're such a breath of fresh air in the content creator space for designers. This is what people need to hear.
Thanks… Appreciate it.

Thank you for sharing this knowledge!
I would say taking complete responsibility for your learning and progress is always essential, not just regarding design school
This is the way... (From a university professor teaching art direction to advertising students.)

2:03 THAT IS FUCKING CRAZY. Completely blew my mind rn. Smh.
I’m just starting and I would love some recommendations for some cool artists from the past
Your channel has been super helpful, who are some graphic designers you would recommend to study?
sweet video!

WAKE UP! So good.
Thank you

@@ausername4590 thanks for the rec, I'll take a look. Reference material is always a welcome bonus!
it'a a little strange that a man with so much error 404 on his website speak about "to be awake".
You sound a lot like Sam Hyde , do you work with him/around him?
I have a video on my history with Sam… look on my channel page for it.
Thank you
Thank you
