Thanks Peter, that was a truly great and well researched piece. There is a lot more to be told of this area. Townsend Street along with having at one time had a pub on every corner had one of Dr. Lock's Lock hospitals. Also, a huge boiler complex which provided steaming hot water for the Wash House and The Driers also heated two swimming pools, one for the men which also had actual baths up on the mezzanine, and a smaller pool for the women. When all of this was eventually cleared away in the early nineteen eighties an archeological dig unearthed a treasure trove of bones, human and animal, and vast quantities of wattle from the origional river banks. This area is so rich in history that a life time of study would only scratch the surface. Mise le meas, Lorcán Ó hÉalaighthe
Many thanks for an excellent video and history lesson. Back in late 1973 I came to Dublin for my first job after leaving school. With a few spare bob in my pocket I was finally able to afford to buy my first bicycle. I distinctly remember one Sunday evening cycling to the city centre on an exploratory tour and ending up beside that sign post for Misery Hill. At the time the general Docklands area was very rundown and dilapidated. I just assumed this was the reason for the name. But, as you explained very well, the history of the name is much older and much more sinister.
Laser lane, comes from Lazar - a medieval term for leper - as in Jerusalem the order of St. Lazarus ran a hospital for lepers (hence 'Lazar houses' being a term for leper colony). A hospital is shown in the area on the speed map (no. 10 on it's key) There are other places in Dublin that get their names from Leprosy - Palmerstown/Palmerston (as it was believed that going on pilgrimage to the holy land and obtaining a frond of one of the palm trees there, would cure you of Leprosy. So 'Palmer' was used as a term for a leper. ), Leopardstown (... yep, nothing to do with Leopards!) and of course Tallaght which comes from the Gaillige "támh-leacht" which roughly translates as 'Plague pit'.
I really like hearing about Misery Hill in Dublin in the medieval era and the story behind what happened and this is really interesting hearing about Irish history and i enjoyed this video thank you Peter.🇮🇪👋
Thank you, Peter, for this interesting video, combined with warm greetings from Germany. A friend from Dublin brought it to my attention. What was particularly fascinating for me was the story surrounding the pilgrimage to Compostela. I walked the Camino in 2010 and can hardly imagine how difficult it was for a person suffering from leprosy to endure these hardships.
Fascinating! As a native dubliner, I had a general knowledge of misery hill and gallows hill but was not familiar with some of the specifics mentioned here, so thanks for the interesting tales. No doubt you are aware that the east side of St Stephens green was also , unfortunately, another gruesome location for executions.
Dear Peter! We had a very interesting walk through the historical past of Dublin. History is mostly sad and painful. Regardless, we have a duty to learn about the events that happened in the past. This part of Dublin has also become wonderfully beautiful. Thanks for the experience as always.
Dear Susan. Thank you for joining me for a walk on Misery Hill. It certainly is a sad story but as you say its important to remember and share. It's nice to see how the area has changed for the better. Have a lovely evening. Peter☘️
I was born around the corner in no 50 Sir John Rogersons Quay. There was a pub, Kelly's, on the corner. We were surrounded by Gas Co workers, dockers, sailors and prostitutes. With that lot you knew where you stood, unlike the pretentious toss pots these days!
Great upload ....remember passing that way in the late 1960s and it was so different ....the name figures in a short story I wrote some years back (UNPUBLISHED !)
I've been walking up and down that street all the time and never knew it's called Misery Hill. Your video is so interesting that It completely changed the way I look at the regular thing I do everyday. now I definitely feel more misery when I walk down that street 😝😝
Brilliant channel. Very interesting stories surrounding some of our street names/places. I used to drive a taxi around Dublin so I got familiar with a lot of the roads. I’ve always wondered is Lincoln place in Dublin named after the president of US. Great channel lad 👌

Hi Ms.Kayak! Thank you as always for joining the premiere. So glad you liked the video. It's not slow motion but I used a DSLR to film to get the narrow depth of field. Haha thank you i'm still learning how to write these stories, it takes me so long to make them. I agree it is important to remember these tales from the past. I can't imagine seeing that sight either! Thanks so much for your kind words of support. Have a good night. Peter.

That's so great. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and the connection with The Camino.
All the best from Dublin.

Fantastic history of Dublin , probably this best one , I have ever heard, Dublin Taxi Driver , 👍
Many thanks!
I live 5 mins from MH, and I did wonder about the name but never looked into it, so this video is appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks for watching 👍
Misery Hill. It's a fine street now but you should have seen it in the 1970's and 1980's. It really lived up to its name then.
