Going back and watching all of your older vids! Blessings Loved the video, I grew up cooking on a wood stove. I still love to cut wood with an ax and split kindlin. I wish I could write a book about my life, I was actually born in a barn, cause that's where Mama and Daddy started out! It would be a very long book because my story still goes on, grandbaby # 19 is now 11 weeks old! I'm sure Blessed!
Go ahead and write your story, I gave both my mom and dad journals and ask them to write their memories down for future generations but they have both passed in the last 2 years and my dad's journal was left blank and mom only wrote 2 memories in hers. I am ashamed to say I didn't record times we spent listening as they talked thinking they would fill out the journals. It will be a treasure for your kids, grandkids and even great grand babies later down the road. Blessings to you sweet lady.
And here we are in December 2021. I remember watching this series when you first posted it❤️. Been canning and dehydrating every moment I’ve got and while watching this series I see I have more items I need to can, like the bacon💕. Thank you ma’am!
My grandmother was born in the territory of the Dakotas. So she learned to cook on a wood stove and over an open fire. Thanks for sharing. God bless and protect.
Pretty new to your channel and I loved watching the 1st day of the FSC! What a great idea to educate people who don't know much about country ways and aren't sure about what to store and how/when to use it. Just day one seemed like a lot of work so for those people who think having a TH-cam channel is easy - nuh uh. You have to be the writer, director, star, videographer, film editor and commentator. Very nicely done Patara.
Patara I am so excited about this new series you are doing. It's one thing to hear about what you need to store but it's totally different to see some on one use it on a regular basis and actually feed a family. I honestly can not thank you enough for all you have and will continue to teach me. because of you I am well on my way to getting my family prepared.
Love the way you use every part! We've lost a lot of that thought process in modern times. We make bacon and toss the drippings. We make each meal it's own instead of thinking ahead about using the stuff we have on hand.
Hello this Pam. We are for sure. I would never throw away bacon grease. Oh my it has so many delicious uses. Season a pot of beans, make delicious gravy and fry some potatoes in it. Grease your iron cast skillet with it and cook a some corn bread. Mercy I could keep going. I don't know about anyone else but I live with waste not want not. Take care.:)

Thanks for talking about this, I think Im going to try this, I dont have a large garden but Im going to try only eating from what I have on hand to see what I really want to eat and also how long it takes me 😊
I don't have a wood stove but I'm feeling the desire to try to do biscuits on the top of my gas stove. I loved watching Missy make them on the top of her wood stove and both of you are an inspiration.
Thanks so much. I'm sure I'm going to enjoy the rest of this series. It's clear in a SHTF situation you would eventually be making homemade noodles for your skillet meal. A little skill in itself. Also, the rest of us might want to pay attention to the thermometer being used on the wood stove! It would pay to stock up on some of these if you're going to use wood stoves to cook in an emergency because we are sure use to those dials on our ovens!! Judging the temperatures on a wood stove takes time and experience on that particular stove! Thanks for this series. I'm sure it will prompt me to make some changes of my own!
Patara, have you tried okra chopped into about 3/4 inches and dredged in flour and cornmeal? Excellent...crispy. The goo is gone and the taste is great.
Certainly no peices of cake. Managing time is challenging but rewarding when it's achieved. Hats off to my grandmother back than. Great first day. God bless.
Same here, but this type of video makes clear to us, in a practical way, just what we might be up against and gives us planning hints without all the hard learned lessons!! There would be plenty of other hard lessons to deal with if SHTF!!
I love that you're doing this, Patara. I love videos that make me think, be smarter, prepare, mentally or physically... Any food storage advice for a family with lots of allergies - grains and legumes, as well as some fruits and veggies. It's been a difficult transition learning how to cook/eat around our allergies. Now I have no idea where to go with long term storage since it usually starts with beans, wheat & corn.
love it! that oven is super cute! I try to keep it simple at home but for sure end up doing something crazy once in a while. I try to think bk during the depression. they ate what they had, little meat and just made it work
I'm interested in how you canned Bacon.... I'm a canner but have never done bacon. I love all your information that u give. Thanks for all u do. Lydia Stanley
I love having hamburger canned up! I’m like what you did with the eggs and green peppers. Im going to try that while I still have some fresh ones left.
oh my goodness. you did a great job. I agree prep would be the most but after cooking the food how would you store it? like the hamburger? this is exciting for me because I've been cooking different things in the propane grill. I know it's different but it helps me to think a little more outside the box. I would like to get a wood stove to practice but it's not in the budget. so I thought about an open fire. the pie that you cooked just floored me because I haven't thought that far. now I did make cinnamon rolls today on the grill without burning the bottom. I was happy about that. you really have inspired me. I could wait to see your video today. now I'm going to search for the canning bacon video. you are so awesome. thank you for doing this series. I'll be with you on this journey.
I have been canning all day. So tonight's dinner is out of the freezer. Tamales and home canned pinto beans for hubby and homemade mac and cheese from the freezer for me. Trying to get the freezer more manageable . Breakfast sure looked good there
Patara, I've been watching your channel for about a year now but just discovered this playlist! Thank you for this. What kind of wood stove is it that you are using outside in this series? I love the size of it!
Girl, you did Great! There have been many times in my life that "making do" was the norm for what you did in this video. A lot of common sense and organization. Good luck on your up coming challenges. I'll be watching. : )
Don't know if you all have a smoke house yet, but we made one out of a old freezer that quit working. Drilled a hole in the bottom, put a stove pipe through the hole and lit a fire in a old grill. works wonderful.
My grandmother on their farm cooked huge breakfasts and lunch (what they called “dinner”’ here in the south) but not supper. Supper was a lighter meal with the day’s leftovers.
I just started watching your food challenge series again! I really enjoyed these videos! I know it was really hard but you learned so much as we did as well!
On my grandparent's farm, it was up before daybreak, she started breakfast while grand dad went out to milk. While we were eating breakfast she was starting dinner (lunch), while that was in the process she was doing dishes, etc. Leftover breakfast (biscuts/bacon/susage was left on the table with a dish towel covering them. The big meal was fed in the middle of the day. Supper was usually leftovers or a cold meal.
Love watching your video's...so interesting and I love the down to earth feel / way of your lifestyle...wish I was there!!! Also, if no one has ever told you...I have to compliment you on your beautiful smile...my gosh your teeth are so beautiful ..straight and so intensely white!
I posted a few times to Thank you for the opportunity to learn more on food storage, but they are not showing up.. so here goes.. THANK YOU for the chance to win these wonderful prizes while enjoying time with you.
I bake my potatoes in the winter on top of my word stove. I rub olive oil on the potatoes then sprinkle with course salt. Wrap in foil and leave on top of stove until soft to touch. I did this one winter when we had an ice storm. The family loves them. The neat thing is once they are wrapped in foil I forget them until I get hungry.
I have cast iron and the steel carbon, I use the steel carbon daily now it’s my favorite. I love watching you and learning from you. Ow if you could lone me energy hahaha thank you for what you do.
I watched you make a meal from macaroni once before. I never thought about adding it to hamburger like you did. Well girlie...I do now! Thanks for keeping me inspired!!!
Hello Mable this Pam. I add hamburger and onion and bell peppers to mine. Add in a jar of tomato sauce and you have a satisfying meal. It's really delicious. :)
My mamaw cooked on a morning glory wood stove in her kitchen she would cook breakfast on cold mornings. Pancakes on the griddle. Yum. Best food ever. God Bless❤️💜💚
+Appalachia's Homestead Ms. Patara... Already hooked on learning, watching, as well as commenting on your Facebook page. (giving the links to this video/Vlog etc) You're doing great! With you along the way. God Bless .
Looks yummy! Could you give some tips about keeping your fire going? I used to do pizzas in a brick oven, and have done some cooking over a pit for Civil war re-enactments, but would be very interested in the cast iron stove. Do you always use hardwoods? How much wood does it take over the course of a day? I'd like to see what your coals look like when you consider them ready, Thanks.
If you cook your ground beef in the morning for dinner later what do you do with it if you don't have refrigeration? I think that's my biggest concern is food safety especially with a family member with a compromised immune system.
Do you dehydrate any foods? Oh and I've never heard of canning bacon/beef or any meats. Just curing it with salt in a smoke house. Where can I find how you do that?
My mom talks about when she was a kid and grandma and grandpa cooked pancakes for breakfast that they would go get one to snack on through out the day. Breakfast was a big meal.
hey there patara may i suggest Calmacid by the Melalueca Company for temporary but natural quick relief of tummy troubles if heartburn, gas, indigestion or sour stomach are symptoms. stress manifests itself physically in me in my tummy has since i was a kid. Gallbladders gone but i still get flare ups like i did when it was going out. ive learned gallstones can still be present but difficult to detect in the pancreas and liver. There's a cleanse with fresh organic apple juice, olive oil, citrus juice that can be done but im busy and i havent taking the time to plan a poo-cation cuz thats whats involved in ridding body of bad stuff supposedly. dont know what ur ails r saw another video where u mentioned it but i hope u feel better soon. consuming raw garlic can have amazing restorative effects on ailing tissues it helps boost ur bodies ability to heal its weakened areas. ive used it and seen great improvement and to heal gastric tract avoid wheat ( mainly frankenwheat ) and sugars and unneccessary added fat whats in there already is ok keep meat consumption to 3 times a week or less keeping meat protein & starch consumption down urges cell regen rather than using bodies energy to digest raw veg is actually NOT ideal for this ease digestion by steaming or grilling do this as long as it takes for u to NOT remember the last time u had a belly ache
I hv an ideal for you to try. Put you cast oven skillet on stove and then the Trivitt in the cast iron skillet, pie on Trivitt then place on lid and cook.....Just a thought. Love ur videos

Canned bacon! Never heard of that! Awesome! I want to learn how you did that! Thanks so much Patara❤
As I'm watching this in 2023, I can't help but notice that you don't look like you've aged even a day. It's amazing!
Layers of love for you to do another series like this again! We all need a reminder for how to actually use our food storage.
This makes me love my grandmother even more!
