    Doesn't adding of salt reduce the freezing point to one lower than 32 degrees, which given the constant ambient temp cause the ice to melt more quickly? Like it would want to melt faster because its new melting point is now farther away than it was before salt was added.

    Just a quick tip for your sashimi slices. If you want a nice clean firm slice of fish you take the fish and slice using the length of the knife take the heel of your knife and slice with little to no pressure using the length of the knife to cut for you. 😁

      Chris Blevins Oh man... I hope so! On the other hand, I will definitely be making some trips down to La Jolla Shores in July and August. I have a brand new Stealth Fisha 555 kayak (made in South Africa) that’s all set up and ready to track down some yellowtail!🎣😃

    Hi Chris, another awesome video full of great content on how to take care of the catch. Bleeding out, and putting on ice asap, are the most important. I use a Reliable Fish Kill bag like yours and carry 5 frozen water bottles in it, so it's ready to keep the temp down while on the water. I stop at the store after leaving the launch and add ice when I get a larger Yellowtail, to chill it more, for the drive home. Thanks forsharing.

    What's your preferred method of bleeding YT?
    Any particular reason you didn't gill and gut the fish on the water?
    I typically do that with any fish I'm going to keep soon after catching them.
    I figure it helps cool them down more quickly and bleeds them at the same time.
    There's also less mess when you process the fish at home.

    Wow- what a great vid! That’s a FULL day or three to fish and eat this nice fish. That’s dedication!
    Q: sometimes I see the fish laying in your yak or in the water to go into shore- and other times people have a big ice bag with fish in it- how long can a fish be kept before icing down?
    I have a passport 12 and don’t have the room for the ice/bag
    Great vid- thanks 😊

    • @chrisblevinsfishing

      Hi Jon thanks for watching. There are many factors to answer this. I will typically just leave my fish “on deck” up to 4-6 hours. Keeping in mind I always bleed them out right away, and I cover them up with a sweater or something and keep them wet by continuing to splash water on them. If I know it’s gonna be really hot or it’s going to be a long day in the sun I will bring my Reliable kill bag with 20 pounds of ice. Also if you can fully gut and gill them on the water after bleeding them out. Here’s a link for the kayak kill bag:

      @@chrisblevinsfishing Sorry for the delay- just saw your reply, Chris! Great info- thank you :)
      Q: is it safe/ok to leave fish in the water on your wire rig- or will dogs/sharks be a problem?
      Also...there's a channel called AFFORDABLE WAHOO that I think you'd enjoy. He's in Hawaii; has a Hobie Revolution 13 and is hard core like you! (he also said he really wants to fish LJ....so maybe you could work out a trade...you show him LJ and he hooks you up in HI. Look forward to meeting you sometime this season at the Shore- I'm doing it!).

    What is the easiest way to catch yellowtail at La Jolla?

    • @markr9312
      @markr9312 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@chrisblevinsfishing That would be my answer, hire a guide! Not cheap but the easiest way. Or put in the time on the water. If you learned all the right thing while doing it, in 6-8 month you'll land one. Before landing the first one, you might hook up and loose several. Then there are those who were soooooo ... LUCKY and caught one on their first trip. Of course those are the kayak fisherman who will provably sell their kayak at the end of the season, because after that first trips luck, it was ALL DOWNHILL. It happens! There are guys I've fished with that still haven't gotten a Yellowtail and have been fishing La Jolla for 6 year, although I'm sure they don't go once a week.

    Does the brining process make the fish technically “sushi grade?” Did you eat that halibut raw?

    • @Briguy1027
      @Briguy1027 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chrisblevinsfishing You're fairly safe with saltwater fish in eating it raw. Most of the parasites you can get from raw fish come from freshwater species. Saltwater fish have different parasites that don't prey on humans.
