- Early in his reign, King Sejong (Han Suk-kyu) inevitably causes the death of his in-laws and their slaves in an attempt to save them from his brutal father, King Taejong (Baek Yoon-sik), mainly due to his lack of authority and power. Two young slaves, Ddol-bok and his friend Dam, survive but neither knows if the other has. Ddol-bok blames the king, and spends years becoming a warrior to kill him. Dam, who has a photographic memory, becomes a court lady called So-yi (Shin Se-kyung), but she feels so guilty about her role in the other slaves' deaths that she becomes mute.
Ddol-bok returns to the palace under the name of Kang Chae-yoon (Jang Hyuk) to kill the king. During his time there, he becomes embroiled in the mystery surrounding the deaths of several Hall of Worthies scholars.
It soon becomes known that the king, with the help of So-yi and the Hall of Worthies scholars, has been working for years on a secret project, which turns out to be the creation of the Korean alphabet, Hangul. Jeong Gi-joon (Han Sang-jin), who is the leader of a secret society called "Hidden Root", believes that the new alphabet is a threat to Confucian order, and decides to stop it at all costs.

Nah in reality it didn’t happen. It’s just that King Taejong has the actual power until his death in 1422. Sejong then ruled by himself after. He had no power when his father was alive

I came here after watching roots of throne....can't understand why yi bang won is being portrayed as a bad guy in this series.
I think has to do with killing Jong Do Jun his mentor. His life was a brutal one. He became bitter cold.
Well he did do some pretty villainous things! That's historical fact.
This portrays Yi Bang Won as a bad Father a Tyrant. He should raise sm1 as tough as he is tho he would find bulling him problematic

Sejong wasn’t being used. Taejong wanted to kill his son’s father in laws such as Sim On.
If the King Father was technically in charge then why did he give up his throne to his son for? Why can’t he continue as King and rule instead of pass on the throne but keep ruling and abusing his son?
@@nightyesterday Taejong wanted to see what his son was capable of doing. Even after being convinced that Sejong wanted to convince people with words, and not with the sword, he did not oppose of what he did. Remember when Taejong told Jo Mal-saeng to not oppose what his son did? That's a sign. And it's not abusing. Though he knew he had the actual power. I think he is not wanting to stay on the throne any longer, especially not liking the fact that he killed his political enemies notably Sambong Jeong Do-jeon and Nam Eun in 1398. Taejong only wanted to take a break but not get back on the throne, as he thinks, and i do agree with him, that the throne is hell.
@@prime4851 , I hear you. I understand he was trying to protect the king’s position. He didn’t want the ministers to overpower and control the Royal family. Korea (and many other kingdoms) had that “Ministers” problem. However, that was not what I meant earlier. The point I was making was that he should not abdicate his throne to his son and overruled him. If he wants to teach his son how to rule, he still can do that when he’s king and his son is prince. Not when his son is king and he’s retired. If he thinks that his son was not capable, then don’t give him the throne yet. Give when both are ready. If he believed that the throne is hell then give up everything and go. Let his son do his job. He can’t just run away from king duty and still wanted and acted king power. What was that action tell about him? To me, that’s coward (ran away from the so call “hell”) and selfish (kept the power and used it), don’t you think? Anyway, this is just our little retrospective and lesson learned from history. Of course things were complicated especially when politics, power, and money were involved. I hope this is our constructive conversation here.

Sambong is long dead, and his organisation didn’t even act for 20 years, which will become 45 years. And the point u were making when you said he should not abdicate and overrule him, that’s where your wrong. I understand, abdicated kings should not continue ruling even during their son’s or successor’s reign, however, that is not Taejong Yi Bang-won. You see, Taejong was a very bold and smart king. You see all the reforms he carried out, how many people he killed and when he created a strong, central absolute monarchy. That is Taejong’s way. Ruling even with an iron fist during Sejong’s reign. And usually kings who abdicate do not lose all their power when they “retire”. However, it is not Taejong’s fault even though it abdicated. Have you even thought about why and how the King Father system has been implemented into the system? That’s because his son Sejong agreed to it. Taejong is a very scary and threatening person, his personality is almost impossible to avoid, and you must follow him in every way even if your his son. But you saw how Sejong talked to his father when Ddol-bok was about to be killed after the jailbreak, Sejong apologised to Taejong after figuring out the magic square when his father gave him the clue of the empty lunchbox.
