    Jack Blackburn is the man he’s talking about. I actually never knew he trained Sugar Ray Robinson. Blackburn was a great fighter himself in the early 1900s. Wasn’t necessarily a power puncher, but a very smart boxer. He was a no nonsense guy as a trainer, which is what molded two all time greats.

      Well-said. The magic that this man created with his nephew is unquantifiable, and beyond that he was a walking encyclopedia of knowledge. It was sad that he had to be in the middle of all that turmoil between Floyd and his Pops during the 24/7 era, but I also admired how he would just play the back role and let them work through their thing without intervening or stepping in. RIP to Roger Mayweather....a true pillar in the boxing community.

      I know this is an old comment but I can't resist pointing out that Blackburn practically built Louis. A lot of trainers (looking at Dundee here) got great fighters that were readymade. Blackburn had the chops to build one of the scariest heavyweights in boxing history. Same way George Benton built Pernell Whittaker (RIP Champ). That's got to count for something more when looking at trainers. I could "supervise" a champion's bagwork and tell him he's a killer, but how many guys can really develop a neophyte into a world level fighter?

    Jack Blackburn trained Joe Louis but Sugar Ray Robinson was trained by Harry Wiley who was with the GOAT from his first amateur fight. There's a beautiful mini-documentary by Rich The Fight Historian on the legendary trainer.

    My list of best trainers in no particular order. Dundee (although boxing experts would say he didn't do a lot of training himself), Lou Duva (look at his resume'), Jack Blackburn (not only did he have champs but he's taught your favorite trainer how to train), Cus D'Amato (he's more than just Tyson. He trained Floyd Patterson and also taught some of the best trainers today including Atlas). Ray Arcel (trained Charles, Duran, Holmes) Beristein, Steward, Wiley honrable mention

    • @Aceshot-uu7yx
      @Aceshot-uu7yx ปีที่แล้ว

      True, Dundee was a lot more about developing his fighters natural talents and more getting them to train thselves with his guiding hand. 16 champions is still an impressive resume for Dundee and saying he only ever had "premade" fighters relly only talks about Ali and leonard. Ali more so but he specifically sought out Dundee for that style of teaching.

    Jack Blackburn did train Joe Louis but George Gainford trained Sugar Ray Robinson. While it’s true that Sugar Ray Robinson is from Detroit, met Joe Louis, and he went to a gym to train, he didn’t have any amateur fights until much later after he was living in NYC. Gainford guided Robinson to his first amateur fight and was with him for the entirety of his career. Gainford being from New York while Joe Louis and Jack Blackburn were in Detroit.

    3 best ever boxing trainers IMO:
    1. Jack Blackburn. Trainer of Joe Louis. Want to learn how to properly throw your punches- jabs, hooks, straight right hands, body shots, overhand rights, uppercuts, etc?
    Watch Joe Louis.
    The greatest knockout artist that ever lived.Nobody put his punches together better than Joe Louis.
    Definition of a textbook puncher = Joe Louis.
    2. Eddie Futch. Incidentally, he used to spar with Louis, and trained boxers learning from Yank Durnham. No wonder he is a great trainer. A fine gentleman. I met him. My hat's off to him in memory of him. Futch = trainer of dozens and dozens of champions including the first two guys who beat Muhammad Ali; Joe Frazier and Ken Norton.
    3. Ray Arcel - Trainer again of dozens and dozens of world champions, including (the too often underrated) Ezzard Charles the greatest light heavyweight boxer that ever lived, and Roberto Duran the greatest lightweight boxer that ever lived.
    Many other great trainers. I put these three at the very top.
