Found a great deal on a '01 Astro with 107k miles and the 4x4 conversion on it. Guy who owned it before me took such great care of it and couldn't be happier about the purchase.

Thanks Michael, All good tips. I've been looking for a long while. I live in the midwest (Indy) so I'm always afraid of what's hiding under the plastic cladding. Not much to choose from lately. I like the idea of a Buyers Checklist. Keep the good info coming.....

Wow, solid advice for most older gm products. Cool learning about astro vans. These all look like california pricing and trying to cash in on the used market while it is still inflated like crazy. At least without the extra info. Like you said yeah maybe if they had a folder of receipts, but even if then.....and that 12k guy must really be nuts to post it in your group?

Thank you, very informative! I just purchased a 2000 Blue GMC Safari SLE with 168K miles. New catalytic converters (that alone was $2,000 they put in) plus quite a few other things......about $2K worth in past 1.5 year. It has some cosmetic issues with paint clear-coat on hood, a few quirks on the interior. Doing research now on how far to go with possibly camper conversion of maybe just use short term and then trade in for something more modern.....like a minivan (Toyota Sienna, etc.). Anyway, thanks for posting good information.....I am just an hour south of Huntington.

12k for an Astro should be in FANTASTIC shape inside and out and its completely stripped. Another 5k, you could get a close to new anything. If the van towed, the trans is probably.. on its way out. I was thinking 7 grand, so we are both in the same ball park.
The second van, he probably rinsed it to hide most of the fading paint. A bit shady in my opinion.
The third van seem much more straight up and more so worth it. The front suspension can commonly be called "struts" from my recollection. No rust is cosmetic rust lol. Maybe surface and that is okay. The floating roof looks pretty cool and its built as a camper van. If its built decently equipped then it brings up the price.
SPEAKING OF WHICH, I need to redo all bushings up front in my van.

Wonder what you would think of my 97 191k miles 2WD... It's far from perfect but $800 for a well running van with no visiable major issues outside of damaged core support seemed like the best deal I could find.. Everything else they wanted higher money for iffy condition.. Does mine have rust? Yeah on the frame not on body unless under clad. No rust holes or rot tho.. Very minor dings in body.. My biggest concern is all the work that's due but on the other hand at least I didn't spend 4k+ for a complete lemon

    Hey...
I have a 2000 awd GMC safari van i need to sell asap.
    210k.
Brand new Toyo off road tires
    Front ball joints/ bearing replaced
    New power steering box
Many other repairs and regular maintence....
    All upkeep and paperwork available.
The only big things I know about are a brand new egg Crack in font windshield, right side. Also check light engine for o2 sensor that I was told would need to be chased down but not too big of a deal. Obviously I'm not convinced but I struggled to find a good mechanic on the road. New distrubutor cap but haven't chased down the light
New locks and dutch door strut but needs rubber replaced. No leaking tho.
The chasis looks good as far as I can tell and there is no rust.
I have some pictures but I am fairly sick and cannot do what I thought I'd have time for. I realize not being able to set up a proper good add will limit me some and I will eat the cost.
I just need fast and not lowballed too much
I'd like to sell it with the cargo box on top and the cargo trailer box with the 2000w gas generator predator which is brand new. ($800) Inside it has an 47qt iceco fridge/freezer jp chest edition. $550 new Also has a metal bed across the back for us shorties....
I'd also include my solar generator box, ecolflow river with extra battery 600 watts(. $550 )
That's a few thousands worth of product that got very little use.
It's set up to be converted. What I did isn't a conversion it was just make it work time. But I was working towards a 4x4 conversion...
I did drive it across the whole country an back with no issues....it's a good van. Has a fancy filter everyone racves about...I purchased it from a family who kept it well cared for since purchased new.
So I'd love to sell it to someone who realizes it's a good base to work with and yes will still need some work to make it a great offroad vehicle.
If you know of anyone looking for a decent vehicle ...please let me know
I apologize for not writing an add like you asked me to Mike. I ran out of time and stamina.
If you don't want this posted I will
gladly take it down but I had to try.....
I'm sad to have to sell but I know someone will appreciate my loss.
Thanks if you let it go or for any considerations.
I know im forgetting lots so just ask.
I'm in Sacramento area in California.

    Hi!
    Getting the Astro bug!
Have my eyes on a 2003
    170,000 miles
With a professionally installed pop-up from a Eurovan. New canvas.
journey 4x4 with new transfer case
    Journey 3" lift (polyuréthane)
    Rear mec lock diff
    3 leaf spring upgrade
    New shocks
    New Ball joints flipped
    New KO2 tires 16"
    No rust at all
Rear was cargo so stripped down ( except factory insulated floor)and ready to be camperized
    13500 USD
    What do you think?
I guess I need to ask about
    Control arm bushings
    Brakes
    Wheel bearings
    All cab issues...
    How does one evaluate transmission?
    What am I forgetting?

    • @AstroVanTribe
      @AstroVanTribe  ปีที่แล้ว +1

If the engine is good it's a real number for that pop-up and no rust. You'll know about the transmission when it's got weight in it and you drive it at highway speeds up grades - The seller should have a file of receipts for the work done, ask about everything

All Great Videos On Astro AWD Vans! I have Owned 5 Of These Vans And The Engine Is Capable Of Unlimited Miles If You Change The Oil and Add Tuff-Oil Additive It Will Never Use A Drop Of Oil Between Changes Even With Over 500K Miles! Also Never any Transmission Problems! RUST Has Made Me Part With All Of Them Being I Live In The Rust Belt Of New England. All The Lines Rust Right Out At 100+K miles and If Your Keeping It Use All Stainless Lines, The Cat Back Exhaust Should Also Be All Stainless No Matter Where You Live Being They Rust From Inside From Condensation.
Your Truck Looks Beautiful Underneath! I Now Have an AWD LT 1995 With 40K Original Miles In Mint Condition, Was Left In a Climate Controlled Garage For Decades So No AC and Tires Had Flat Spots But Original and No Dry-Rot To Any Rubber! It's A Van From The Brochure Back In 1995 and I Only Paid $5,600 for It, Replaced The Tires With White Letter Michelins Light Truck Mud And Snow M/S and Replaced The Exhaust With All Stainless From Cat Back. Undercoated The Entire Van With 18 Large Cans Of Rhino And It Looked Showroom New Underneath With Not Any Rust At All! Undercoating Rust Is Milking A Dead Cow.
A Brand New Van Would Cost What 80 Thousand With AWD? And The Astro/Fari Has One Awesome Feature That The Slider Door Is So Low To The Ground My Old Dogs Can Jump Right In With The Middle Seat Out Making A Living Room For Them, (115lb German Shepherds)
My Advise: Every Car, Van Truck, SUV Etc. Is Engineered To Fail! 100K Miles or Just Past the Extended Warrantees! 6 Years 100K Limited Warrantee? More Cameras and LED lights But Nothing To Keep It From Rusting, Subaru Has Wheel Bearing/Hubs That Go 100K miles Because They Make More Money On Repairs Than Selling Vehicles Making You Rent Them after The Car Payments End.
I Just Love The New Honda Passport Black/White Addition But Look Under The Car Its All Raw Steel and FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS! I Went To Look At One And The Sales Guy Wanted To Know What I was Looking At? "What Do You Need To See Under There?" Answer: What I will Be Looking at Rusted In 5 Years! Oh Ok, Most Customers Don't Need To Know That He Says.
The Only Reason They Stopped Making This Astrofari Was It Lasted to Long and The End Of Greaseable Ball Joints That way They Could Control How Long They Last, So Eliminating grease fittings Was a Win putting 100k miles of grease in each one :O)
So in My Opinion Keep Your Old Junk and Never Upgrade to New Improved New Junk like Washing Machines, Dryers, Refrigerators, Hoses, Etc. I Still Have 35 year Old Maytag Washer Dryer With Original Hoses With Zero Problems Other Than a Dryer Belt and No Leaks But You Can Up-Grade To Flood-Safe Hose and See Your Cloths In The Washer Machine? I Put Them There and I Know Where They Are. Lets Buy A Samsung Wi-Fi Fridge So We Can See Our Food So We Know What We Need for 5 Thousand Dollars But The Compressor That Makes The Food Cold Is Junk along With LG and Kenmore 5K The LG Compressor Scam! Make Them Rent The Fridge After 3 Years, When We Have Freezers From Frigidaire That Are 40 Years Old Keeping Food Cold and We See It When We Pull Food Out And Its Cold! Naa We Need To See 5 Hundred Dollars of Food Spoiling on Our Phone Because The Main Function Of The Product Is Trash.
Keep Your Old Junk Because The New and Improved Junk Has a Best If Sold By Date Code,
So See If Any Other Vehicle Made Past 2005 Can Get To 2040? NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN!
If You Buy a Subaru Get The 2.0 Not The 2.5
These Vans Are Not Rock Crawlers or Off-Road Camping/Adventure Vans But Will Survive A Lifetime Of Getting You There in Any Weather As an AWD! 5 Lugs Or 6 Its The Same Van. If Your Thinking An Extra Lug is More Durable than 5 Then You Might Be Over Estimating Its Capability Being Its More Capable Of Lets Say a Hemi Hellcat Unless Doing Donuts Is The Thing for 70 Thousand? See How These Cars Do In The Snow/Sand,! They Don't.
In Closing The Astro Is a Passion They Will Never Make Again Because You Can Control It's Life And That Is a Lose For Them.
Rubicon, Gladiator, What Ever They Want To Sell You Is All Shit @ A Cost Of Decades Paying For It! EZ Payments?

Wtf is going on with these, I bought my 98 in 2017 in great condition with 150k miles on it for $500. Not $5000, $500. Built it out, replaced fuel pump, radiation, dist cap, and alternator over the course of hitting 330k miles. Blows my mind how expensive they've gotten.

The AWD's are pretty amazing vehicles - They can be easily modded out and still fit in a normal parking spot, it's basically the footprint of a Subaru
