My 9yr old son spent our last trip to his Grandparent's farm trying to convince his Grandpa to give him the blade off his tractor rotary cutter bush hog so he could build a battlebot with it. I think we got a future Dave Eaton here in the repurposed farm equipment builder category! He also wants to know when Dave is going to stark making actual Rusty plushes like he had this last season.

I'm so hyped for the return of the ICE in Battlebots in the form of Rusty Jr. The new bot looks really well designed, although there was definitely an emphasis on keeping the whole "junkyard" aesthetic and making it somewhat goofy. I love it regardless and hope it's able to compete in season 8.

I would first insist on fighting Skorpios. Then I’d included a tape cassette player blasting a mixtape of the ditty “Zach n Diana”. Diana would be too busy singing along to fire the weapon and Zach would be too distracted by her to drive. Easy win!

Love Rusty! I went down to my Garage and scoped it out to see if I could come up with something to use for a Battlebot, and I realized, I could Cannibalize my step-dad's old motorcycle, which my mom would definitely appreciate ever since he got into a crash with it and broke his leg. Though I don't think he'd be as open to the idea himself.

When we moved into our new place back in 2020, we found that the previous tenant had dumped a treadmill in the back yard. You bet your ass that there are disembodied parts of that thing in Boltergeist and our insectweights! I also use chunks of it when I teach friends and family how to weld. I just get the angle grinder out and take a slice.

What would I use in my robot?
    What's tougher than Rusty?
What's tougher than an old Nokia?
    A 1984 Toyota Hilux.
I'd take the drive shaft out and use it as a horizontal undercutter(basher). Then once the fighting was done, I'd put it back in the car and drive home.

I would use an ablative armor made out of wood but not just any wood Southern Live Oak. Same as the USS Constitution "Old Iron Sides." This would be a 2 part reason it's an inter locking grain Oak that has a Janka Hardness of 2,680 lbf so it's really hard and can take a beating. Part 2 would be because when it does break off, say by a bott like witch doctor or copperhead the wood would absorb some impact due to the interlocking grain, but it would also start to send unique splinters all over the arena. Over time this could decrease the coefficient of friction on the floor and could possibly interfere with drive ability of robots if the splinters were getting into moving parts. I run a sawmill and have a TH-cam channel as well. I cut hundreds of species of wood and there's nothing like live oak. It could really be an interesting wood to use if properly mounted. Has absorption qualities, durability, splinterability, and would be unique. Additionally it's inexpensive and would work better in a robot fighting situation as green wood rather than dried. In its green state the wood would have more give before splintering thus take a beating. Since I've been cutting wood on a sawmill since 2003 there's no wood that I dread more than live oak it's a real pain to cut, lol.
Just a thought, love the channel and thanks. Also I think I'll shoot a video on it this afternoon after work, where I cut live oak and do some testing to show how ridiculous it is. Here's the video of my take on live oak.

My father was a scrapper for most of his adult life and there was an abundance of parts from anything metal laying around the shed and in the basement. I loved to scavenge through the parts to fix lawnmowers, bikes, etc and still do it today. Unfortunately, my wonderful father passed away from cancer in 2020 and I was heartbroken.
He left behind thousands of pounds of junk for me to sort through and haul to the scrapyard. Going through all of it and sorting things brought back so many memories and the valuable lessons I learned from him. Not everything is junk and most of it can be repurposed.
I didn't have the hear to haul everything in for scrap and kept several things that I thought I could use. A blower motor from a furnace, water heater valves, large aluminum plates/bars, and more. I would love to use these items and make a bot called "Bumpa" (my father's nickname).

I live on a horse ranch that is right alongside a cow farm, so there’s lots of leftover fence posts, barbed wire and bits of metal from when the barriers were made. Barbed wore wouldn’t be able to do damage on its own, but it would definitely go a long way in robot look intimidating. We also have a few spare gate parts left laying around that could be reshaped into arm bars or even some kind of malformed Mammoth.

So we've got an old sturdy metal PC case that would be perfect for a chassis. For the drive, we have a bunch of old lawn tools that I could use the motors from for drive. But I've even got an old gas, driven lawn mower that I could use for a gas-driven spinner! If ICEwave retires, I'd have my own loud spinner.

So fun fact, the first two iterations of my 1 pound combat robot Angry Bird was made mostly from household items. The body(and for the first iteration, the face plow as well) was made from sandwiches of foam board, and the “weapon” such as it was, was a door hinge that I filed down to a point to make a hinged wedge beak that worked surprisingly well. My first combat robot Lestat similarly had some DIY salvaging for materials, as I took the blade off a spatula to use as its wedge.

We have an old oil drum we use to carry trash out to the corner. I could take that, cut a hole near the bottom for an axle to run some pneumatic tires from Rural King. Four old scooter motors, one for each wheel and one of each “arm”, would serve as the weapon and drive. I would have to get a lid and a “tail” to allow the robot to be stable as it drove. A local charity store has some sledgehammers for like $2 each, so I’d buy those and use those as the weapon system. Last and most important we’d have to give it a face.
I shall name it Garry, because once it’s complete it’d look like something out of Garry’s Mod.

QOTD: Looking around my dorm room, I'd probably take apart my fan for a spinning motor, then attach shoes to the motor by their laces for the weapon. For the body of the boy, I'd take my fridge apart for it's wires and side panels to use as armor. For locomotion I would take apart the plumbing beneath the sinks to roll the bot on top of, like ancient times.

I would use pieces from the "technic" sets for movement and have so many choices for tires or treads! I would also probably use some of the many parts of RC drift cars that my son has burnt out over the last few years... but I have so many thousands of legos from hundreds of different sets dating back 25 years! As a musician I don't have a lot of strong materials to go with (lots of wood!).
I'd use my guitar case as housing, then a heavy duty music stand as a plow (not the foldable one). Or if it's a lower weight class I'd use guitar pedal casings as armour, as they are aluminium and only have four screws on the bottom. I'd call it Distortionator.

I live in a crappy apartment where absolutely nothing is built to last, so if I want a battlebot part from it, I have to get *really* creative. I'll take the old cat bed that my cats have both outgrown and incorporate it into the shock-mounting of the internals. This wouldn't be especially useful on paper, but it would embody my robot with the spiritual rage and spite of my cats, which is not an unheard-of tactic in Battlebots - Jonathan Ridder from the Comedy Central seasons named and painted Ziggo in honor of his cat, and it won three championship titles. My cats probably aren't that hardcore, but they'd at least be good for a top 4 finish.

I have a plethora of bowling balls so I'm thinking bowling ball flail as a weapon, and I'm thinking freezer doors as armor! Now for the rest of the design, I think I would have to take a page from "Moist Pony" in other words, all of this would be shoved into a giant stuffed unicorn complete with pinwheels!! (don't ask why I have a giant stuffed unicorn but I do!)

I would build a horizontal spinner made out of metal from our old boat and whatever other metal I have laying around. It would look sort of like tombstone, but instead have treads made out of those little plastic dividers included in tackle boxes, with 2 being stacked as each tread piece. The weapon would be 9 metal fidget spinners attached to a tri blade, with the middle of the blade being solid with three arms that have 3 SOW fidget spinners (They have those, look them up.) on each that spin freely. It is attached to the bot by 2 cribbage boards, one on top of the spinner and one below it holding it in place. Imagine SOW’s blade, but instead of ‘hammers’ at each end there are fidget spinners. The arms are solid baseball bat handle metal. The weapon would be powered by a super high power modified leaf blower (because chains and weapon motors are overrated) that comes out from the hull of the bot slightly, and pushes the weapon and keeps it spinning using wind. The fidget spinners would all be rainbow, and so would the entire bar itself, making it look really colorful when it spun. I would paint everything else silver and call it ROY-G-BIV. (I have no clue what to name it I’m bad at names, this is the only thing I can think when I think rainbow.) I would also add a T-shirt launcher made from one of those tennis ball cannons for dogs, that shoots super compressed shirts into the crowd at high speeds. (Do shirts break the entanglement rule? If not, I just want to launch shirts at the other bot during a match.) I would also have a custom made Faruq bobble head attached to the top. (Can come off if flipped)

I got a roomba. Just stick a rake on that bad boy and we have hypershock. In all seriousness, though, I live in ny and constantly dumpsterdive for parts so I have some pretty nice equipment like a linear actuator from a bed. I’d probably build it out of that kind of stuff. Maybe some parts from my standing desk and steel from our pans. At some point I’m grabbing a blowtorch for cooking, so I could totally use that as a nice little weapon.

I would love to just build a robot using a conventional Chainsaw as a weapon, to get that 90s feel.
But I think a Flamethrowing beetleweight made out a Toaster would be way more fun.

I’m a horticulture student and have access to a lot of wood/trees. Perhaps a very low density wooden bot, with lots of crumple room to absorb impacts. It would have a small bot in the middle, probably with a chainsaw weapon to keep with theme. It would have large wheels, and when it’s crumple zones are inevitably blown to bits, it will high center our enemies so we can start sawing away.
Would call it wrath of the forest

I wonder if I could take apart my heat press and use some of the panels for armor?

My dad has a very old oscilloscope. It's gigantic- we're talking something out of the '50s, so its size is like comparing a UNIVAC to a modern desktop computer. We could take the tubes, dials, and meters and make a sci-fi-B-movie-inspired bot. Old laser pointers could be the eyes (though we wouldn't want to blind the audience), and spools of multicolored wire could make great mad scientist frizzy hair. Dad has a bunch of patent plaques on the wall; I'm thinking we take replicas of those and affix them to circular sawblades (of which there are plenty), so patent drawings are spinning around at opponents for an added intimidation factor. Perhaps we could somehow use the many volumes of Encyclopedia Britannica lying around as armor to round out the nerdiness.
The name would have to be ridiculous. I'm thinking Dr. Science, PhD. (The PhD, of course, is in Physical Destruction.)

The most interesting thing in my house to use for a bot would be a taxidermied black bear. Don't ask me how it would work though 😅

I would use a bunch of pots and pans in my kitchen to make rusty a friend and or rival "Stainless"

I think i would use my desk, it is solid and 3 inches thick, and it hasnt broken yet (even though i regularly drop things on it lol) it probably wouldnt do as well as other bots with any metal armor, but it would be glorious to see it strewn across the battlebox.

I've got three old DeWalt battery powered circular saws. Two top mounted and one undercutter. All horizontal. Put some 10:1 cycloidal gear boxes on.

After about 15 minutes of insane laughing and cackling we came up with.... using our cat Princess Zelda Marie Flufferbottom's unicorn scratching post. The head be a hammer with a spike and the tail be the self righter. The barrel eould fit all yhe internals.
Ps. Stop being an hour or so away and not say hi! J/k

I have my mother's old bread machine. It's a boxy thing that would be a good starting structure for a bot, and it would have good sentimental value.

Honestly Rusty is the physical representation of CC Battlebots. Bots made out of aluminum or junk parts and they still can do Something. Rusty sr will forever be an incredible bot and Rusty jr will carry on his father’s legacy

Looks like you had a nice time at Rusty's farm and if I'd choose something to use from the house I choose a boiler whether old or currently used since it's durable and can withstand fire and I think I make to a motorcycle themed bot called Wild Chopper so it look like a fuel tank with it's own wheels one of which is a vertical spinner weapon

I'd probably use my 200 or so Funko Pops, they could melt down into quite the lump of spinner blow softening plastic, glue that to my Fingertech Viper and I'm golden.

I have some old and quite large carriage bolts that have been hanging around for at least a couple of generations. They're too good to throw out, but never have been able to come up with a use for them. Got to be able to turn them into axles or use them to hold a bot together. They have to be useful somewhere in a bot.
