The police have come under fire over several road block exercises conducted across the country, particularly along the highways leading into Port of Spain during rush-hour traffic on Thursday 18th July 2024.
• But in an immediate response, deputy commissioner of police in charge of anti-crime operations Junior Benjamin said he did warn about police operations that may inconvenience members of the public.
• Benjamin is quoted as saying that the operations were part of directives given by Commissioner of Police Erla Harewood Christopher.
• Drivers complained about police road checks along the westbound lanes of the Churchill Roosevelt highway, the Lady Young Road, Eastern Main Road and Debe highway, among other routes.
• Benjamin said apart from focusing on crime hotspots, the police are aware that guns are being moved around the country in cars.
• He also dismissed suggestions that the police action infamous 2015 “day of total policing”, when officers embarked on a series of unsanctioned roadblocks that resulted in traffic gridlock across the country for hours, in response to the slow pace of wage negotiations.
• The police action followed 18 murders recorded over the last weekend and meetings of the national security council.
On Monday March 23rd 2015: between 4am and 11am, hundreds of police officers participated in 29 road block exercises throughout the country during rush-hour traffic, causing massive traffic gridlock for hours.
• The exercise was referred to as the ‘day of total policing. At a press conference in 2019, then commissioner of police Gary Griffith referred to it as ‘a day of total stupidity’, where he announced that disciplinary charges could not be taken against the officers because of an appeal court ruling where disciplinary action cannot be taken after four years.
