Agree 😊 They really shouldn't have to though...it should be manufacturers taking responsibility for choosing sustainable resources, and taking back their used products for recycling, upcycling etc..then they would act more wisely. Imagine if H&M or IKEA was responsible for their rubbish n had to care for/pay for it...they'd start being very sustainable fast😉
It's amazing we put so much of protecting the environment on the consumer and none on the corporation. I threw out more edible food and plastic waste in a day working at a Kroger deli than I do at home in a year. Composting was a joke; we were told not to use the bags because they were too expensive.
I know that it's complicated, but if recycled stuff costs SO MUCH MORE than normal stuff, people will still want to use the normal, not everyone can afford sustainability! And THAT is a huge problem!
It's the oil subsidies that's making virgin plastic cheaper than recycled ones. Cancel the subsidies and recycled plastic will automatically become cheaper
The 2nd hand stuff is less expensive n not in bad condition plus you can find more diverse and unique items. So but a few nice things instead of a heap of rubbish...goes for apparel, furniture.. all of it

It's pretty terrible to watch this hour and more program on dealing with waste and knowing that the US is doing pretty much *NONE* of it whatsoever. Small businesses in the US are, but none of the big companies are going to bother without some heavy duty regulation or *insane* taxes on their waste (and the waste they deliver to consumers to dispose of - excess and non-recyclable single use packaging, ect).
This was the only one which I thought was the most controversial since algae are living organisms. So we’re basically killing the living organisms that small sea life feed on to create a product that would otherwise end up in the small and big sea life environment. The pro’s to this is that they’re farming the algae they could never extract it from the sea since it’s too small. This leaving the sea habitat unbothered. The cons is that there’s a carbon foot print to farm the algae.
These ideas are all so awesome! It’s my dream to work of a company that’s part of the solution. I have a question though.. Isn’t it also toxic and bad for people to burn the incense made of flowers that contain all of those toxic chemicals in the second segment?
I love these ideas! All we need is for new plastic to be just a penny more expensive than recycled plastic and then there will be incentive for companies to use recycled materials. A penny per ton would be enough to shift the big businesses mindset on the matter.
Why do you need chopsticks . It’s just a bloody status thing to show everyone in an Asian restaurant that westerners know how to use chopsticks pffft . . I’m 73 years old and I eat Chinese food with a spoon and fork . Leave the chopsticks to the Asian people and do something to save our planet.
I would love to have the thongs (maybe an old fashion term ?) but I am 73 yrs old with a hip replacement and I need a shoe with an upper part, and no back. I am sure the material like leather that was shown earlier would do the trick. I also loved the packaging that was also shown that you can tear up and plant for flowers. Love these types of videos :) Regarding the bread in France... If a bakery makes 50 banquettes a day but only 40 sell.. then the following day they should only make 40. This would reduce the left over bread, no ?
Not necessarily. If a business is constantly sold out because it didn't produce enough, it leads to a reduction in business over the long term. Consumers tend to spend less time in an understocked shop/bakery than they do in a fully stocked one. It is a hard balance to reach and ultimately will produce waste based on common consumer habits. We could change the habits in time, but until then the waste needs a way to be used.
@@laurent3415 good point. In my country, we call this "hungry eye phenomenon", where we decide to take a product out of large bundle instead that one that's sitting alone on the shelf. But on the other hand, in our culture, bread was never wasted. Bread crumbs are one of the most common products, sold by bakeries, supermarkets, small grocery stores etc. We also make them at home by simply drying pieces of bread and grinding them in a food processor, blender or in a simple pestle and mortar.
@@a_l_e_k_sandra Exactly, we do the same since decades, always dry our left over bread in grind them for several uses, now adding it to pastries and cakes is a surplus.
I’ve worked in the restaurant/bar business in the US for 23+ years. Lauren T is absolutely right. We work on a par system, but if we have 40 steaks and 41 guests that want a steak, that 41st guest complains to us and their social circle, they get something free in return, and the odds that any of those people come back when they can go next door is hugely decreased. It’s a constant balancing act. You know Americans; better to have more than you need and throw the extra away than to ever have less.
Our local bakery routinely cuts unsold, bread into cubes or crumbs, for resale. I do that with my own bread. I put the cubes into buttered bakeware, along with any appropriate 'leftovers' & herbs, pour well blended eggs, and topping of grated cheese, and it becomes a dish called a Wifesaver. It can be frozen or stored 4 days in the fridge. Delicious.
11:12 the problem still remains, in the consumption behavior, this is still single use plastic. this is still the part of consumer behavior that causes so much excessive waste in the first place
Plastic spoons and forks might be uselss in my opinion I mean we have metal ones we can reuse over and over again But since we humans are lazy we made plastic ones that are convenient for use as with all other things There are metal chopsticks as well
My old school used to use metal utensils but they said students broke them but why make metal utensils that cheap when the school gets so much money? *this is why I do cyberschool*
And the plastic forks or spoons often are not able to pick up a bite of food with. Knives seem clumsy and cannot cut a piece of meat. Fork tines snap off on hard plastic ware and the softer ones bend double. 🤔 A complete waste. So much real silverware available in thrift stores.
Most disposable Chopsticks are made of bamboo which is a grass that readily grows. It is quite sustainable if we use it to heat homes or make charcoal briquettes for grills. The carbon cycle continues to the air and the bamboo turns it into chopsticks.
Kinda true. However the tables they're making are also replacing ones that might have been made from wood, metal or other materials. So the effect is larger than you're portraying.
Up cycling those chopsticks seems like a very good idea. I guess we should focus on collecting and storing them. Also have another use for them until the remanufactured concept can be implemented
@@DJRenee Yes, I don't understand why in this day and age they're made from wood or cane in restaurants they could be auminium or hard plastic, I keep such things at home.
This really hit home. I had no idea how bad things are and how we all should be using these sources. Really made me think. I love the first one, the recycled chopsticks. Am going to look into this one more. I really hope that the IKEA recycling takes off.
The environment is the least of your worries right now. Landfills are a more than acceptable place to put our waste. Plus, they are way more environmentally friendly than recycling plastics. Unfortunately, everyone has been sold the recycling lie.
Reduce, reuse, recycle. In that order. We should not be relying on recycling as the main solution. The only reason it takes the front page is because it encourages more consumerism, aka more profit.

Incredible. Wish there were many more ways of recycling our use that were also more cost effective, as well as doing away wiyh waste we don't need. Thank you for this.
In the case of recycle wood chopsticks, i think this is the way small business should handle.
There not wood, it's bamboo!
i'm actually very disgusted of this practice, especially "baking" the sticks in order to kill bacteria. Don't forget these sticks contain food remains and people saliva and god knows what could come out of a persons mouth and hands. And I dont see the good part in it, for what are they doing this? To save trees? come on, i bet there are more appropriate means to do this instead of handling germs, saliva, and cooking them alltogether. I'm stunned how they don't seem worried at all about corona up there in Canada ))
@Viperz926 I don’t doubt that, but me personally I find the way they do it a little simplistic and as they said they are a small scale business, and I suppose they still can improve. Recycling is always good doesn’t matter how it’s done 😃
Still I admit I’m amased by the results, i forgot to specify, regarding that they know what they’re doing. The market should be virgin on this kind of handmade stuff, i bet they can’t keep up with the orders they get.👍

The memorial reef thing should be here in Australia, too- it could be very beneficial...

Huge respect for you guys for covering such an important topic which people are least bother, but i think if mother nature🌷🌳 is save only then our existence is possible and for that it's very important to live life sustainably. Thank you so much Business Insider Team 🤞love from India

The US and other big countries just send their trash to poor countries to deal with.
Companies do "green" because it improves profits and claim "green"
Awesome contents!! Highly informative.
The Algae Flip-Flops sound like a great pitch on Shark Tank.
It is very expensive in London. Way over prised! Excellent products in Dhaka and Hong Kong.
A penny per ton would be enough to shift the big businesses mindset on the matter.
did not realize there were so many chopsticks thrown away. AMAZING
Thanks For Sharing, Crazy & Wild > Toronto .Canada
Ya, I love the idea of not creating any garbage or food waste in the first place or at least the smallest amount possible 🙌👍👊🌎⭐️⭐️
That product should sell for any packaging except some food ones lol. This video should be shown in school classrooms or made more attractive to watch for kids. Thank God for smart people like these guys. The incense sticks should be sold everywhere...please and thank you!

Thanks a lot. The video was very entertaining but also informative.
Wow loads of good info! Definitely already looked up some of these companies to support them
Plastic spoons and forks might be uselss in my opinion I mean we have metal ones we can reuse over and over again
But since we humans are lazy we made plastic ones that are convenient for use as with all other things
There are metal chopsticks as well
My old school used to use metal utensils but they said students broke them but why make metal utensils that cheap when the school gets so much money? *this is why I do cyberschool*
Ikr you need only one set of metal cuttlery that lasts for ever. Why give the plastic ones in the first place
And the plastic forks or spoons often are not able to pick up a bite of food with. Knives seem clumsy and cannot cut a piece of meat. Fork tines snap off on hard plastic ware and the softer ones bend double. 🤔 A complete waste. So much real silverware available in thrift stores.
16:12 16:18 Algae and Soybean Flip Flops... can we eat it!?
Most disposable Chopsticks are made of bamboo which is a grass that readily grows. It is quite sustainable if we use it to heat homes or make charcoal briquettes for grills. The carbon cycle continues to the air and the bamboo turns it into chopsticks.
Kinda true. However the tables they're making are also replacing ones that might have been made from wood, metal or other materials. So the effect is larger than you're portraying.
@@newolde1 also kinda true, how much carbon is in our atmosphere?
Hint: not enough to bother (less than .4% or 0.0004)
Wow, so many chopsticks. How many would they go through in China and Japan, for that matter around the world? How many trees just for a meal a day.
If we don't save Earth, he will give us the worst consequence unimaginable. Eliminate humans and start all over again.

This really hit home. I had no idea how bad things are and how we all should be using these sources. Really made me think. I love the first one, the recycled chopsticks. Am going to look into this one more. I really hope that the IKEA recycling takes off.
No, you have to research more.
The environment is the least of your worries right now.
Landfills are a more than acceptable place to put our waste. Plus, they are way more environmentally friendly than recycling plastics. Unfortunately, everyone has been sold the recycling lie.

Truly outstanding film 🎥.Amazing thank you.
I hope there is something we can do it locally. Today, our recycling system is confusing and we also don't know where things really end up.
Reduce, reuse, recycle. In that order.
We should not be relying on recycling as the main solution. The only reason it takes the front page is because it encourages more consumerism, aka more profit.
My hats off to the people involved in UPCYCLING the used chopstick ! I, myself UPCYCLE, I make round padded chairs that swivel from used tires and I use bicycle tire painted and decorated with a mirror in the center for a wall mirror.
