Stayed here many times - before renovation and after. I saved all my hotel key cards because of the beautiful artwork on them. The most beautiful hotel (MY TWO CENTS)
The Palmer House's claim to being the oldest is because the hotel was torn down in parts when the current building was constructed. However, since its annex was kept open during the construction of its "new" building, I would have to be in the camp that opts for the Parker House (1855) in Boston as being the oldest hotel in the country. I did stay here once, but didn't find the room to be anything to write home about: comfortable and clean but nothing comparable to the lobby. Very enjoyable video.
Even in death the Palmers have the grandest gravesite in all of Graceland Cemetery in Chicago. I've been there several times and all of the Chicago elite of that time are buried there. But nothing comes close to the Palmer's tomb.
Not Kipling’s finest moment, They told me to go to the Palmer House, which is overmuch gilded and mirrored, and there I found a huge hall of tessellated marble crammed with people talking about money, and spitting about everywhere. Other barbarians charged in and out of this inferno with letters and telegrams in their hands, and yet others shouted at each other. A man who had drunk quite as much as was good for him told me that this was “the finest hotel in the finest city on God Almighty’s earth.” - American Notes, ch. 5.

Very nice production. Double thumbs up!
Used to stay here about 20 years ago... I love their slogan: "City of Chicago had been built around Palmer House Hotel"
Good job!

They sure don't make buildings like that anymore
