One of the six surviving buildings of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, The Field Museum of Natural History in Grant Park has become a prominent cultural building in Chicago and world renowned history museum. It works in tandem with the other museum campus buildings but stands on its own in its beauty, embodying the vision and spirit of the World’s Fair. While a part of a larger tradition ...

The Bohemian National Cemetery
มุมมอง 1.6K5 ปีที่แล้ว
One of the oldest resting places in Chicago, the Bohemian National Cemetery was established in 1877 as a result of a communal effort to represent Czech culture. When Marie Silhanek, a Czech woman, was denied burial at a number of Catholic cemeteries across the city, the Czech community came together to purchase land in North Park and formed a cemetery based in their own ethnic heritage. The cem...

This video describes how a neoclassical and French architectural past has inspired the creation of The Conrad Hilton Hotel Chicago. The luxurious hotel is regarded as a "City Within a City," serving as a showstopper due to its exterior and interior architectural designs that take guests on a journey back to an imperial palace in ancient Rome.

Cleaner version of my earlier (deleted) comment: That doesn't surprise me. It's Chicago. NYC, LA, Boston, etc. don't have what we have. This only adds to the appeal of our modern day city (a marriage of timeless/old, with sleek modern).

Oops. You are confusing the Museum of Sciemnce and Industry in Jackson Park with the Field Museum near Grant Park, about, 5 1/2 miles away. The Columbian Exhibition's Fine Arts Building became the Museum of Science and Industry. The present Field Museum was not part of the Columbian Exhibition and was bullt about 10 years later. The confusion may arise from the fact that the present Museum of Sdience and Industry housed the natural history exhibits for awhile before they were moved to the present Field Museum. The buildings have always been different but have sililar architecture.

I worked as an Andy Frain usher during the 1971 season and was at every game that year including the playoffs. I became a Blackhawks fan in 1961 at eight years old when the Blackhawks won the Stanley cup. Me and an old friend of mine used to take the Central Avenue bus from Belmont and Central to the Madison Street bus to the Stadium to watch the Blackhawks play. We always got standing room tickets in the 2nd balcony. I'll never forget walking up those stairs to the 2nd balcony they seemed like they would never end. People now think the United Center is loud, it dosen't even come close to how loud the old Stadium was, and the organ was amazing. Saw so many games and have so many amazing memories of all the Hawk greats that I will cherish forever! Go Hawks.

The photo at the 5.05 mark is not the Chicago Stadium but old Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. When the Leafs moved to a new arena, the Gardens was partly converted into a supermarket, the other half being used as an ice rink for a nearby university.

A very beautiful building, and I am glad that the people of Chicago saved it. I have attended several free chamber music concerts here on several of my trips to Chicago. It's a bit of pity that there wasn't land available to add a large wing to this building in the same way that Boston was able to both keep its old library (1895) and its new wing made from the same granite in a modern version of the original.

Even in death the Palmers have the grandest gravesite in all of Graceland Cemetery in Chicago. I've been there several times and all of the Chicago elite of that time are buried there. But nothing comes close to the Palmer's tomb.

Thanks for bringing some attention to Chicago's gorgeous art deco Civic Opera House. But it is not, as stated, in The Loop, but some blocks to the west of it. Also, the building itself does not face west. All entrances are through the block long colonnade along the eastern façade. However, the building does look like a giant throne, and anyone seated on the throne would be facing full west, looking across the South Branch of the Chicago River towards the equally fine art deco Daily News building. There are also box seats in the theater, but only above the back of the main floor, not along the sides as in most European opera houses.

My grand mother worked as a waitress in the restaurant most of her life, retired at 65 with a pension, and received a lifetime 25% store discount. The Frango Mints that they made there in-house were never in short supply at my gram's and I ate so many when I was a kid that even the thought of them now kind of turns my stomach.

got out of the service in '67, we bought season ticks from a scalper, 2nd balcony, 2nd row on the goal line where the Hawks came up from the bowels of the Stadium. we would take turns going to games. i was lucky to be at the game when Hull broke Richards record for hat tricks against if i remember correctly was the LA Kings, and Roggie Vachon was in goal for the Kings..the roar was defining. everyone was standing and cheering, and Hull motioned to the ref to drop the puck, but he wouldn't, he let the fans keep roaring. what a great memory for me....RIP Robert Marvin Hull

The Palmer House's claim to being the oldest is because the hotel was torn down in parts when the current building was constructed. However, since its annex was kept open during the construction of its "new" building, I would have to be in the camp that opts for the Parker House (1855) in Boston as being the oldest hotel in the country. I did stay here once, but didn't find the room to be anything to write home about: comfortable and clean but nothing comparable to the lobby. Very enjoyable video.
