I’ve been studying a lot of EQ tutorials and this is hands down the best and most direct overview! I would love to see what the overlap map would look like after the EQ as well. In any case I’m taking a screen shot of the map and using it as wallpaper on my desktop.

Excellent description of subtractive EQ for carving out space in a mix. Diagram was terrific!

A great simplification to see / hear the wood from the trees and inspire a plan to fix what is needed George - Thanks!

    Great explanation.
    My list of importance.
    1. Production (A. Arrangement B. Instruments ) The majority of your sound (maybe 75%) comes from this.
    2. Equalization to help give each instrument its primary space in the frequency spectrum.
    A. Static eq (a lot of pros love pultics because they are less phasey)
    B. Dynamic eq with side chaining
This is the most powerful way to get competitive frequencies to play nice with each other once you get the hang of it. It will help your mix to be fuller.
    3. Ambiance (A. reverbs B. Delays C. Chorus)
These help to create a room for different mix elements to live in. The room an individual instrument is recorded in that isn't dead with give an acoustic, wind or brass instrument natural ambiance of its own. A live drum kit also comes to mind. You can also eq and gate your effects to clean up a song.
***You could do a detailed video on each one of these elements.
    Just my 2 cents

      Georgina,
I also didn't mention listing to one's favorite songs with these thoughts in mind as well as panning balance which let's you get by with more frequency overlap in the mid and higher frequencies because they are separated on the left or on the right. With headphones it will be easier to see how panning will open up a mix and sound beautiful. Commercial mixes maintain a delicate balance between width, depth, balance and excitement. Too much balance is boring. An exciting song moves you and has surprise elements. If more mixers imported their favorite songs within the genre they are mixing and put an analyzer plug-in on them, the quality of the average home mix would greatly improve.

Can you do a video with an example of how you methodically write and think about how you determine to eq instruments?

Do you have a tutorial demonstrating how fundamental frequencies determine the pitch compared to how harmonic frequencies determine the tone, as you mention @1:31?

Hi, what if you have mp3 instrumental and need you to mix your vocals to it :-( same process? I found it quite difficult to blend the vocals to the instrumental as it is already mixed :-(
