I had no expectations for The Book of Clarence going into the film, but during and after the film....mindblowing. The story, thr cinematography, the directing, the acting, the soundtrack...the plot themes...especially Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal, spoke volumes. Clarence's character development impressed me as well. Salute to this film. It is an absolute must see.

Strangely, it's not as confusing as religion as we know it today.😊 It's more thought-provoking in the proper context. Clarence is one of the homies who lived in the same hood as Jesus in real time. So, of course, he wasn't a believer until he was. I think the formula in this movie is ahead of its time, translated as confusing and strange to those who have yet to understand.
People constantly complain about a dearth of creativity in Hollywood, with its overreliance on bankable IP and endless sequels to superhero films . I hope those people will go see this film. If this isn't a creative premise, I don't know what is.
I veiwed this movie critique video with trepidation because two white people male and female are commenting on black art. Note: when I say black art it doesn't mean that other groups can't observe perceive appreciate or not appreciate black art and what's going on with it... however most of the times when it comes to individuals who are white critiquing black art it's misconstrued and here we have the gentle woman speaking a little bit more highly than the gentleman but both undermine and don't completely overstand that this is a comedy parity first. Do we not overstand what the director was attempting to do???🤔 I guess not... And Jay-Z Is Not the Only Money backer in this particular movie but I get it individuals out of certain ethnicities/races don't know how to congeal with art that is outside of their boundaries hence you have critiques that are doing just that, unable to see black art out of a white construct.
I agree 100%! As I was watching this, I thought "This isn't for everyone, but it's especially made for us!" For further example, "Harlem Nights" is a revered classic in our community, but many white critics panned it as Eddie Murphy's worst film to date.
@@TheN1406 Their review was spot on from their point of view. To give another example, I (a 40 yr old Black Man) won't be as into "Mamma Mia" or "First Wives Club" as a 30 - 60 year old White Lady might be. Nothing wrong with those films. Not knocking their quality, just not the target audience.

The line about them "always tak(ing) our babies" wasn't meant to be a contemporary insert, it's an acknowledgment of how long the struggle against white supremacist oppression has actually lasted. One of the central themes of the film, is that nothing has changed but the date on the calendar... Pretty much everything we've got going on today, was going on back then. Sex, drugs, gangsterism, white supremacy and police brutality have been around longer than all of us. And so has the transformative power of faith. It's actually a brilliant film, if you understand the subtle nuances and depths of black culture on display...

Oh my god! I never would’ve put together that Jeymes is the brother of Seal(henry) Samuels!?! Because I was a huge Seal fan once upon a time Ive always kept up with him and his family but not in a million years could I have realized the connection!? Thats wild.
I'm a 100% Atheist, and I find it ironic that Christians are offended. My expectations were subverted because I anticipated a "religion is stupid" message, but I was disappointed because it was more about "Let everyone believe what they want and find their own path." Additionally, I believe the movie's excessive comedy marketing was a mistake. I expected a very silly slapstick, "laugh per minute" comedy, but it turned out to be very dark, the darkest level of comedy ever. I didn't realize I might actually cry while watching this movie. So I don't necessarily interpret it as "a Christian movie" nor outright comedy. I think most people who strongly dislike it do so because their strong assumptions weren't met.
I had a very different realization from the ending, to me the final commentary was an explanation for the different voices and tone of Christ in the Bible. As Clarence is on the cross and even when he is carrying it through the street, this is og bible Christ,he is speaking like one version of Christ, the white dude is setup to be the face of Christ so Romans will eventually accept him and then we have the og who ties the rest together. So this interpretation is that Jesus is actually three people and they will contribute to the legend of one person.
This movie was everything i expected and more. The white jesus part caught me off guard a little lol. I can see how they were mocking the white jesus which really is Cesare Bargia. Look him up. When they were doing the painting scence you can see cesare Bargia (white jesus image)
Interesting. Cesare Borgia is considered (by some) as a strong, ambitious, brutal and powerful ruler and part of the prominent Borgia family; why do you think he used his image as the WJ? Where is was the director leading the audience? I’m lost in the messaging and was asking for an opinion. Thanks.
That's the part I did not really get in the movie. I've studied Cesare years ago, and he was the son of Pope alaxander the Six. There's a book you should read called The Borgias. It was the father who inspired Michael Angelo to paint his son as the replicant of Jesus. Cesare Bargia was also the lover of the great painter Michel Angelo.

Big long swing yet misses, I agree that it deserves points for creative audacity. The afro-centric comedy/satire concept is excellent and gave me high hopes, but it forgets what it is by the third act and just becomes a full faith based film. By then the few jokes stuck in the middle of the remaining revenant and somber scenes come off jarring and tonally inappropriate. After the awesome trailer, I thought it was going to be skeptical like _Life of Brian_ or maybe faith affirming but critical of false profiteering like _In God We Trust and Leap of Faith,_ instead it ended kinda clichéd like a Tyler Perry flick.
Okay. Glad I’m not the only one. Saw this 2 weeks earlier at an AMC mystery screening for $5. At the end of the movie, I did not know what to make of it or how I should feel. It is not a parody, but it is not faithful to the bible story or even an spin off story like a Ben Hur movie. Ultimately, I’m not even sure the message of the movie. I would love to hear the director talk about this movie. At this point, I can’t give it more than a 3 out of 10. The cast was good, and LaKeith Stanfield always delivers. But I have no idea what was delivering. It was like a friend drove me around the block, and we ended up where we started. I was no wiser or further in my journey of life.

After the awesome trailer, I thought it was going to be skeptical like _Life of Brian_ or maybe faith affirming but critical of false profiteering like _In God We Trust and Leap of Faith,_ instead it ended kinda clichéd like a Tyler Perry flick.
Shut up u trying too hard to sound smart
Fun and cool movie. Jesus potrayed as The Christ Miind rather than the man was a good take.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Personally I can’t wait to see this
Interested in hearing your thoughts afterward!
Really good movie ❤❤❤❤
So glad this movie flopped. It did not know whether it was a comedy or a drama and did neither right. I give it a 2.9 out of 10
ExBlackly my take and a few other people I spoke with leaving the theater. I was almost disappointed with the twists and turns and also the abrupt ending.

Director's take on the movie
Try harder.
they are making too many movies that nobody will watch.
You didn't know what to do with the film, because it wasn't meant for you.
Interesting!!!♥️
I am going still check it out. The movie sounds interesting
Please do and let us know what you think!
Okay, it's not for me.
Make-up is on point, Christy
the book of clarence l2.22.1928-6.13.1969]: this movies not rated.
but yes indeed this movie farce is blasphemous to clarence, all-the-way.
I expected nothing.
He 'mixed up the Western in the Harder They Fall'? You mean he finally showed the reality of Black people as an integral part of the history of the American West. Cringe review.
Hi, have you seen "The Harder They Fall"? What we're saying here is that it's a genre mashup: a Western with anachronistic dialogue and music. Thanks for watching.
I DON'T WANT 2 SEE IT AND I DON'T BELIEVE JESUS WAS BLACK OR WHITE I'LL FIND OUT WHEN HE RETURN AND I DON'T WANT 2 WATCH THIS MOVIE MOCKING GOD LIKE THAT
You do know this movie was not made for you.
Appreciate the thought, but we like to review every kind of movie around here. Thanks for watching our video.
6.5 / 10😮
This review is totally spot on.
It's clear that YT ppl never can truly overstand anything aboriginal ppl depict our thoughts and culture and ethnic ways
It’s clear? How so?
Unfortunately faith based art is often bland. This sounds good. I'll have to check this out. Praise the Lord.
Massive flop. It made about $6 million on a $40 million budget.
Your point?
@@melishek0001 That was my point.
Did they name his Clarence to piss off Clarence Thomas? 😂
This movie is Perfection! Caucasians stop your foolish jealousy! You should be happy they put a dirty Caucasian Jesus in the movie for you! You people could never make a movie this great! Let alone be Jesus or Clarence
Thank you for watching and for your very entertaining comment :) Glad you enjoyed it so much.
I don't know what movie I just saw but none of them were great pick a genre stay in it maybe do a little twisting a little bending but not what this was this guy is some Jay-Z artistic partner he wants to be the black Quentin Tarantino but he's not I truly don't know what to make of this film so I'm not even going to try cuz it didn't try
No Thanks but like your review.
Thanks Brian!
Just imagine the howls if a comedy on Shaka Zulu was made and all the actors were white
White people were in it y’all are the Roman’s causing havoc like yall are used too what’s the problem
The trailer for this played before All of Us Strangers. (Yeah… lol) It was an immediate pass for me. I didn’t laugh once and it looked like it was going to end up drinking from the faith based cool-aid.
Edom will be Edom
Exactly
