  • Ahh fall, the sunflower seeds are in and one can use them in bird seed or whatever one likes, but I really like to eat them....ROASTED.
If your at all concerned about seeds being dirty your can soak then in salt brine verses just washing them. We dont sun dry the seeds either which can be done, if you sun dry soak them for safety sake. We do use a oven at 250 for hour this will also kill off and bacteria on them plus they are salted and washed.

I was watching a video on why nuts and seeds are soaked first I was thinking of not soaking them overnight but found out why they need to be soaked , besides cleaning them from bacteria it cuts down on the enzyme inhibitors which is why some people have hard time digesting them , a little bit of knowledge goes a long way if you put in utube why nuts and seeds need to be soaked it's a good teaching and informative .

I tried an online recipe calling boiling in salt water and bake at 450 for 15 min or longer. I did this good salt flavor but the inside seed was burned to a dusty crisp. Then I found your directions. I put in off but did today and THANK YOU, I have yummy edible seeds.

Layer some clean newspapers in the bottom of a shallow cardboard box. Cover the newspapers with paper towels. Spread the sunflower seeds out loosely in a single layer on the paper toweling. Allow them to dry at room temperature overnight.
Sort through the sunflower seeds and pick out the plumpest ones.

Its fun growing sunflowers!! Also, I live in TX and they created a natural shade for my other veggie plants in the hot summer months.

Put the sunflower seeds in a paper envelope. Label it clearly with the variety and date. Seal the envelope in an airtight plastic container. Store it in a cool, dry spot until you’re ready to plant. The vegetable drawer in your refrigerator is a good location.

Ive been getting mine at Winco in the bulk bins. 65 cents lb. then I salt them with Celtic sea salt. Yummy, their seeds are like David’s jumbo seeds. David’s 1lb. Bag costs $3.49. Yikes! 😋

I bought a plastic bag of shelled and salted seeds. I washed the seeds of the salt, and placed them on paper towels to dry them. Thought about using my oven, even my hair dryer to dry them!!
Any ideas? I thought of making a dryer of 2 wire colanders and a hair dryer.
    All ideas are welcome.
    Great job with your seeds!
    Later!

Awesome video thanks! Looks like the kids thought it was fun/interesting haha. I might put some cayenne in mine too. Ive heard using oil to help the flavoring stick. Dont know if thatll soften them up though gonna try both ways.

So how do I store them and if my flowers died long before the frost can they still be ripe? * I didn't try to grow them, they spontaneously erupted from uneaten bird seed.

When you harvest seeds after drying seeds is it possible to remove peels of seeds by hand because machine is not available everywhere. Kindly reply me plzzz.

    • @joymarie3839

If you're referring to eaing them with the shell that's on the outside
yes you can eat them way , which I do but that is when they are in the raw state
when you take them off the sunflower head , that's how you see them in the peackages in the stores but it's not the same as fresh right from the garden ,
then when you roast them you can take the outside shell off and eat the sunflower meat that's inside .
Sunflowers grow easy they just need an open area where there is full sun
The mammoth sunflowers are the seeds to eat you can do more research online , too.
