  • A supremely recorded execution of the most magnificent contrapuntal achievement of Bach. I realise that being exposed to that intense and complex monothematic contrapuntal organ music for a prolonged period of time (let alone in the same key of D minor) may be an exhausting musical experience, but I believe that even a few good listenings could pay off by enhancing your perception of counter point and it's possibilities. It could well be considered an important lesson for everyone who seeks to start developing musical thinking on a higher level. After all, it is highly possible that The Art of the Fugue was intended to be an intellectual exercise in which Bach explored in depth the contrapuntal possibilities inherent in a single musical subject and not a musically interpretable composition. Unfinished or not, there is much to explore in this work and from many points of view. The recording includes performances of both the officially unfinished Contrapunctus XIV and the one completed by Lionel Rogg.
    Contrapunctus I - 00:00
    Contrapunctus II - 03:33
    Contrapunctus III - 06:50

    Contrapunctus VII - a 4 , per Augumentationem et Diminutionem - 23:20
    Contrapunctus VIII - a 3 - 27:11
    Contrapunctus IX - a 4 , alla Duodecima - 33:58

    The harmonies of the 'Art of Fugue' seem absolutely other-worldly for music composed in the 18th century, not only anachronistic, but oddly like nothing before or after. It is absolutely shattering how easily Bach shifts around the harmonies as if he just put aside all the things he ever learned on tonality, yet is able to use all the tricks available and making all those transitions so seemless as if he was writing them in a mesmerised state. Reminds me of the story when Mesmer hypnotised an illiterate housekeeper and made her suddenly capable of speaking french as if it was her mother tongue.

      Totally agree - like nothing before or after !
      --- and just before the end of the last fugue he merges the medieval double leading tones
      (medieval: A / C # / F # to G / d / g;
      Bach: G / C # / a / f # (!) to G / D / bflat / g )
      in an incredible condensation with a futuristic chord language ...
      Looking back, he looks far into the future.

      The contrapuntal style of the AoF is a peculiar blend of modal and tonal systems. What I find remarkable is that, as you say, it sounds like nothing else and yet at the same time gives the impression of being prototypical and universal music.

      Art of Fugue is the last monument of a baroque music in my opinion. It's interesting how later music of Bach's sons and other Classical Era composers took different path. For me, counterpoint in fugue form is always better (in terms of composition freedom and improvisation) than a sonata form.

      That is true. I must have listened dozens of times to Contrapunctus XVI Rectus - a 3, which I am in the process of learning, both on organ and pedal harpsichord.
      Rogg's playing skills are inimitable. However, I will try my utmost to learn this particular fugue to the best of my abilities.

    Ich habe wenigstens 30 Interpretationen der Kunst der Fuge gesammelt und verbringe viel Zeit damit, die CDs zu hören. Ich entdecke jedesmal wieder etwas Neues. Diese Interpretation ist so ziemlich die beste Orgelinterpretation, die ich gehört habe. Rogg entfaltet die Macht der Orgel auf die Macht der Musik. Bach hätte wohl seine Freude daran.

    My favourite recording of The Art of Fugue. I still have two of the original LP releases (with very detailed notes, including all of the registrations used for each part).
    Also, I think Rogg's completion of the final fugue to be not only convincing, but superb in its own right. I thought so four decades ago, and I still do now.

    Rogg was my earliest and to this day one of my most favorite Bach interpreters. He has deep understanding of phrasing, tempo and accentuation. His rendition is interesting. Also I agree with fellow posters, that the AOF was written for Harpsichord(s), I think the organ a new kind of symphonicness to this piece. This can also clarify the structure in many places. The downside is that it can enforce a certain perspective on the structure, wheras piano or harpsichord is more free floating.

    • @thomasmrf.brunner
      @thomasmrf.brunner 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For me, this recording by Lionel Rogg is the most sonorous and transparent AOF recording - with this organ sound even the harmony in the passages becomes clear, and in fugues like Contrapunctus 7 and the last unfinished fugue the long notes shine through the other voices in all harmonic shades evoked as on no other instrument.

      For what it's worth, years ago I wrote to Mr. Rogg to ask if he would be willing to share the score of his conjectural conclusion and he indicated that he intended to not publish it. I also wrote to him again about a year ago and received no response. Of the many conjectural conclusions written, his strikes me as the most convincing, the most Bachian. It is a loss to the world of music that the score remains unavailable. I wonder if any software program exists that could convert the audio into the score???

  • @TheGloryofMusic

    There is no question that Bach intended the AoF to be performed--it cannot be an accident that almost the entire work can be played by two hands at the keyboard. And the mirror fugues that are not negotiable for one player Bach arranged for two keyboards.

    • @pbrower2a1
      @pbrower2a1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True. But this music is so abstract that it could be arranged for play on any ensemble or single instrument suitable for contrapuntal use -- organ, synthesizer, or piano as well as harpsichord; string quartet, wind ensemble, plucked instruments, or chamber orchestra. Vocals? It might be interesting.

    Lionel Roggs interprtation is absolutely fantastic but these fantasy "portraits" of Bach from the 19th century are not optimal. Also I think that the unfinished counterpoint should be left unfinished as it is. No one knows how Bach would have finished it and this should be respected. It is much more impressive and authentic to hear the music suddenly break off. Listeners realize the moment of Bachs death and the finiteness of human life and struggle.

    • @Wonkycake
      @Wonkycake 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bach finished the last fugue long before his death. It is most likely that the last part of the score was lost.

    • @daucuscarota6602
      @daucuscarota6602 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Wonkycake Well, no one knows for sure. The score that we know shows an unfinished piece. The lines for notes to follow are already drawn, but the handwriting with the musical line breaks off. And there is the added remark by his son C.P.E. Bach: "NB: ueber dieser Fuge, wo der Nahme B A C H im Contrasubject angebracht worden, ist Der Verfaßer gestorben." - NB: while working on this fugue, where the name B A C H appears in the Countersubject, the composer has died.

    Martin AshwoodSmith, I am sorry to tell you this, but L. Roggs completion is inadequate like my English. We have to write at least seven more developments to complete Bachs plan. There is not a single beautiful development in any major key, and no development in inversus. Sorry, but this is not a completion at all. But on the other hand, his coda sounds good!

    • @ghmus7
      @ghmus7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually research has shown definitively that the completion should be about 42 measures, give or take a small coda.

    • @geiryvindeskeland7208
      @geiryvindeskeland7208 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dr. Gregory Hamilton, thank you for your reply. "Definitively about 42 measures." Kees van Houten think he can proove that the correct numbers of measures to complete are 33. Indra Hughes think the correct number of measures are 47. If we want to complete Contrapunctus as a quadruple fugue, none of this suggestions are right. How do I know? Dear Gregory, if you find the time, please go to my own completion. To save time, skip to 4:20. Before listening, please read the extensive text, and hopefully you will agree with me that 33, 42, or 47 can not be right. But some people think that the obituary after Bach think that Contrapunctus XIV shall end as a triple fugue, not as a quadruple fugue. If the "triple theory" is correct, well than 42-50 measures are closer to facts. Bah! After reading my harsh comment, I feel a little bit sorry for Mr. Rogg. But in a way I can also understand myself. I spent a lot of money to finish my completion, and I struggeled hard to complete. The project was in and out my brain for atleast two years.
