AA1PR It's all personal preference. My rig can take a side angle way beyond my level of comfort, and I don't get tippy often. I prefer the roof storage so I can load for a longer duration, and keep the interior clear for passengers.
+Overland Bound the easiest way to aim the lights down would be to grab the flat metal that the lights screw into on the inner edge of the plate and pull up so it tilts the lights down
I ordered a rack for my 100 series from victory 4x4. As soon as I installed it I knew it was a big mistake. I instantly started the return process and ordered a real rack from gobi.
I'm glad to see someone finally going in to some detail about these racks- it certainly will help me make a better informed decision when it comes time to buy one myself. My comment is really an aside- although it's tempting to leave your axe and shovel strapped to the top (we all think it looks cool!) look at their handles: shovel is badly degraded and the axe handle is so badly cracked as to be nearly unusable. Maybe either leaving them at home when they're not needed or replacing with fiberglass handled tools would be a good idea.
+OliverClosov13 fiberglass handles are inferior to a good well cared for wood handle. Sand the wood back and treat it with boiled linseed oil. We have been doing this for years and years in the fire service and wood always comes out on top. A lot of the newer guys prefer glass but a well taken care of wooden handle will outlast the user. Wranglerstar has videos on it. Love the rack, love the truck, Have one on the way for my FJ80!
nice I just got mine delivered Friday after ordering it in October. I love my fjz80 keep the vids coming I share them to my facebook groups and my buds
yah it was meant to be here for Christmas tree harvesting but it got tied up in holiday shipping. but its here and I just got it on. the thing is heavy so I needed some real help getting it on. btw the safari model name has been changed to the ranger.
He said to get a rack with alot of load weight but he didn't say to keep in mind your own vehicles load capacity, if your already maxed out with the trunk and passengers it could be dangerous to drive it and damageing to your vehicle as well.
Looks really heavy which is a concern when weighted down and your offroad. Baby likes to rollover for hard breaking on freeway too if swerving to avoid another car...but it looks good.
Philip Gragg depends on what roof rack. i have gone through 3 different kinds and even did some custom work on my Jeep. When trying to add certain things like Kayaks ect... the Thule roof racka that I had didnt work so great. I needed a sturdier one and there are brands that have cheap thick tubing. When you see a Gobi rack you can tell right away there is a huge quality difference.
I'm curious about the wind dam (fairing), since you have it mounted _below_ the rack. Is there more benefit to having it mounted there as opposed to where you more commonly see it mounted, on the front of the rack itself?
Did you say that they will give you the ladder as a free accessory?? So if i order the GOBI stealth for my 4runner i can request the ladder be a free accessory to lower the overall cost of the rack? Or is it because that particular rack you have doesnt come with the ladder as a package so that was an accessory option for you
I am making or haveing made a 4.5 x 5 foot rack out of 1 inch square tubing . I asked the metal guy to make it the strongest and money saving way he could which ended up being 90 degree angles which is fine with me . I found some clamps at the junk yard which is going to save me 75 dollars . It is transferring some of the labor to me . I don't have it yet but should with in the week . I paid 65 for 3 24 foot long steel tubing and labor so far the basket is made is at 140.00 . All said and done I should come in at 250.00 . But will do a couple small add ons when I get more money
I am in the process of doing the same thing but I will be building the whole thing by myself. I have a Nissan Armada and the roof rack selection is very limited. Plus I want to save myself some money.
You will be a lot happier making it your self . I see racks around town from time to time . And I would be afraid to put more than a suit case on them . Not only just some of the small one''s But the tubing . It looks about the diameter of my grand kids baby swing . Some of them are way overpriced . HOPE TO SEE YOUR RACK WHEN DONE .
I have been practicing trying to weld some scrap tubes and I kept burning holes init. So I'm going to have to take the materials and drawings to a welder...
Bravo Foxtrot what type of welding are you doing? if Mig use a smaller wire and if not try adjusting the wire speed to a faster rate. the speed controls the heat.
I've enjoyed going through your videos. I noticed you left your stock roof rack on underneath your Gobi - If you had a naked roof, about how much clearance would you have from the top of the roof to the bottom of your rack? I've been planning my own roof rack build for a while now, and will "borrow" from this design a lot. My only issue will be total height added once it's all said and done. At my current stock height, I should still be able to fit in the garage fine, but if I'm ever able to get the 2.5" lift I'd like, keeping it in the garage may be an issue so I'm going to try to keep my rack as close to the roof as possible.
Mine will not take the whole roof on the xj jeep cherokee but am thinking of making a small basket to either attach for the front of it or let it be stand alone .
I would so much rather pay someone a little more to do it for me, where they will have decent r&d and some sort of warranty. Plus, I barely want to spend the time putting together an already built one, I'm definitely not going to want to design and build my own
What I didn’t like was that even with gently touch to the mesh on your rack it was rattling. If something rattle - it is not completely secure. I think it needs more weld to between mesh and frame. And also it is so annoying when something rattle…
+Carlos Ibañez Yup! You just want to be sure it is rated for the load. Some racks that are made for the RTT have areas of sidewall missing so the RTT mounts right on the roof rack instead of up on the rails. www.4wheelparts.com/aux_incl/images.ashx?i=3800200A.jpg&partNo=ARB&w=330&h=330
Can you tell me or maybe show me how you drilled into your roof for the lights and how its all set up? I'm confused on how you did it and i don't want wires coming out from the sides of my 4Runner. If you got the idea from another website or anything, that would be very helpful!
what kind of temps are you seeing in your 80 when its loaded down and on a hot day? just this weekend my 80 unloaded without a rear bumper but with the same front bumper and roof rack, I was running 212. this was only a 10 mile trip at 55 mph with a few street lights. it was about 110 outside...
I would also appreciate more info on this as well. I traveled with my Landcruiser a lot and haven't really needed a roof rack so far but I very much enjoy watching sunsets from the roof of my car and sleeping on it underneath the starts.
Hello. Great video. What kind of hardware did you use to seal the wiring hole in the roof and is it water tight? I am thinking of doing the same thing and I am little worried about the seal. Thanks
excellent video Mike aka expeditionnroth here are you worried about center of gravity ? with my rig I never added a rack because of low lying branches trees etc & now with my disability I cant even access one
Hi. Thanks for the video. I have an FJ Cruiser and they offer a stealth and regular rack: which do you have installed? I'm just wondering for height reference. Thanks.😬
Wow, I got on your link to Overland Bound website. They only make stuff for newer model vehicles. I am in the process of converting my 1993 ford E150 to 4x4 with a conversion kit from ujointoffroad.com. They offer racks also but I really like the design on the overland. But I guess I will have to continue to shop.
Thanks for the great video! Very nice setup. You mentioned avoiding the modular racks - were you referring to Slimline 2 by Front Runner in that suggestion? Been looking at them and Baja rack for my LR3. I'll check out Gobi too!
***** I just prefer one piece units in general. Not picking on anyone, but two things are very important to me, 1. Flat deck, and 2. One piece unit for durability.
Hey there, interesting video. I was wondering about having a rack that can take a slide in table between the rack and the roof. Have you used those and what are your thoughts on them?
Mike D I haven't used them, but the right slimline table would probably fit. I know a few guys who have them tucked under the rack. Just be sure to measure first!
your rack should be welded to the top of your truck, cause anyone with a good size crow bar could just pop all the spots where you have locks on your frame of the truck. Now for security of your property on top, you might think of covering it with chicken wire while travelling.
Great video! I agree, GOBI has been wonderful with their customer service. Im going to have to call them and ask if they don't include the GOBI logo on the wind deflector. Could you go into detail or point me in a direction of how you installed your HELLA lights (front/rear) and what products you used to drill, plug the hole and seal the hole through the roof of your vehicle?
Don't know about US case, but in Eu, some companies do the same as in this video: the kind of marketing that talks about what other do bad, instead of JUST defending and promoting what the companies believe they do good. Very nice setup. I want a rack for my FJ62, but haven't done a lot of research yet. This Gobi rack seems well thought out and put together. What does one of these racks go for, roughly? Thanks for the video.
Thanks. That Baja sounds a lot closer to my budget than the others. Rock sliders and lockers are higher up on my list right now though. Oh, and tires larger than 31".... XD
Overland Bound I've got a couple videos on my channel. Check 'em out and you'll see it. She's an '89 FJ62 and a work in progress. OME lift, ARB bull bar Warn winch. . Plenty of upgrades left to get done! Hope you enjoy the video(s). East TN, by the way.
Yes it would support a tent, but I really think I'm a ground tent guy. My reasons are rack space, size, number of people, going up and down a ladder. I don't mind, but guests.
Overland Bound cool thanks! Also just noticed the sunroof inserts , those are the only removable section towards the front, correct? I really like that option and just to be able to store stuff without worrying they will fall through the rack.. I have land rover discovery with the typical roof rack for that veichel, I wonder though if I could install those gobi inserts to my rack...
THEBLADETHROWER Yup - the sunroof section is the only removable piece, which I think is a good thing for rigidity. I think they make a rack for the Disco!
Krynical Gaming, I went on the site yesterday and if I read correctly they have the ladder option (I'd call to see if you could get shovel/axe mount swapped) and free domestic, lower 48 shipping.
Hello Michael! Say me please, installed roof tent on this roof rack bad idea..? I have roof rack ARB and roof tent. Maybe uninstall rack and make platform..?
The roof rack starts with the feet. If they are no good then your roof rack is no good. It sucks stopping and having to pick all your stuff that fell because the feet broke. I have been there.
Earnest Thomas there is a new compaby coming up you can check it out on google it is called ikamper (www.ikamper.com) it has my eye but kind of expensive. different types of tents but so aerodynamic.
It is a nice roof rack, and a little pricey for the average consumer. but you do get what you pay for.. I am concerned about your overhead off road lighting.. You used wire nuts? So you spent money on the top of the line on the rack and lights and you didn't use a weatherproof plug connector? I bet you did the lights yourself, any respectable shop would not use wirenuts on a vehicle. solder and crimp with weather proof sleeves or weatherproof plugs if you have to remove the rack. Period... I know someone that did the wirenut thing with his overhead lights and grill lights and the road vibration and wind made the connections loose and caused a pretty bad electrical fire. A few of us are gearheads and advised him that he may have a problem prior to this fire.. Word to the wise, Take your time with wiring and always use proper connectors, fuses, relays and wire gauges.
This is great advice. I would like to tell you that I have since improved those connectors because I know you are right, and that those wire-nuts were temporary, but they weren't, and I didn't, and now my lights don't work. Lesson learned...safely. Thanks.

I ordered a rack for my 100 series from victory 4x4. As soon as I installed it I knew it was a big mistake. I instantly started the return process and ordered a real rack from gobi.
Gobi is a really great company!!! They just installed a rack for me last month, the staff is awesome.
+Steve Bond Agreed!
Good review. Have a Gobi for my 4Runner and have been very happy with it. Quality is first rate!
NCtrail4R Agreed! Been using it for a few years and I have no complaints.

Ha! The axe IS unusable. It was shattered on my last trip. Time to get a new one! Thanks for the comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
+Matthew Moisan I wonder if painting/dipping it with Rhino Liner (or similar) would also work. I imagined it would help, but have not tried it.

+Colton Fetz Hahaha!
lol, i thought it was a backpack
Sold! Love it. Want one and will be checking them out. Thanks for the great review. Great work and keep the vids coming.

You said you were going to switch to Maxtrax. How did you mount them? I am looking for less expensive options than the Gobi mounts.
doesn't $1-2k seem a little excessive for some bent tubing and metal grate?

Nice rack. I went with the eezi awn k9. I'm really pleased.
On the back of your rig, you have metal holders that hold gas cans, spare tire, etc. Do you mind sharing what type it is and where you got it.
youngphotographer unfortunately the company does not exist anymore. Check out Slee Offroad for other options if you have an 80!

Novice here; Could you explain the purpose of the cable running from rack to bull bar?
+OliverClosov13 Those are limb risers. They keep branches from striking the window when plowing through brush!
If it were me I would fab up different mounting brackets for the lights and leave the rack alone.
Just build your own rack!
Jesus H. Christ very true

Where can I buy a complete roof rack with a ladder on the back? For a 2019 highlander. Thank you
On the Gobi website
just use a BFG on your roof rack to fix your light postioning, your never gonna get that into a bender unless you cut it apart

Hoping for extra HD channels.
Can you tell me or maybe show me how you drilled into your roof for the lights and how its all set up? I'm confused on how you did it and i don't want wires coming out from the sides of my 4Runner. If you got the idea from another website or anything, that would be very helpful!
Brayden Jackson Yes of course! II have an article about it at overlandbound.com here: overlandbound.com/tech-tuesday-route-power-to-your-roof-rack/
It looks good. I need one for my 2006 Ford E350 passenger van which I am converting it to a camper.
Frontrunner is modular, but it seems to have a ton of good reviews. What have you heard?
Nothing specifically on FrontRunner, but others I have personally seen breakdown.
Nice vid.I am waiting for my gobi stealth. Long wait and expensive but it's an Important part of the rig.
what kind of temps are you seeing in your 80 when its loaded down and on a hot day? just this weekend my 80 unloaded without a rear bumper but with the same front bumper and roof rack, I was running 212. this was only a 10 mile trip at 55 mph with a few street lights. it was about 110 outside...
Busted temp gauge, but high.
hmmm. you should pick up a scangauge2. or maybe not because you always look at it and start thinking you need to fix something... lol
anything like this for a full size truck with a bed shell?
Instead of "Taking this in to a tubing bending company", simply redrill the mount holes for the lights. Thanks - Lumpy
Do you have a vid showing how you ran the flood light wiring through your roof metal? Looks similar to electrical hardware.
+JR Cook Hey there! I've got a post on our main website. Here you go!
www.overlandbound.com/tech-tuesday-route-power-to-your-roof-rack/
How aerodynamic is this rack ? How did you gas mileage change ? I am looking into the stealth rack for my 2017 4Runner
I would also appreciate more info on this as well. I traveled with my Landcruiser a lot and haven't really needed a roof rack so far but I very much enjoy watching sunsets from the roof of my car and sleeping on it underneath the starts.
maybe a dumb question, what is the point of the cables coming off of the roof rack?
Those are called "limb risers" and they prevent branches and brush from slamming into your window!
Hello. Great video. What kind of hardware did you use to seal the wiring hole in the roof and is it water tight? I am thinking of doing the same thing and I am little worried about the seal. Thanks
DO you like permanently weld cross bars or recommend adjustable bars from The Gobi?
I prefer welded for durability.
Whats the model, year and trim level of the vehicle in the video?
What is it coated with?
Awesome review love the channel.
question that might be on here, but can't seem to find it. What is the purpose of your support limbs, or the metal gauge wire from rack to bumper?
That's to push tree limbs away from the windshield
excellent video Mike aka expeditionnroth here
are you worried about center of gravity ?
with my rig I never added a rack because of low lying branches trees etc
& now with my disability I cant even access one
What types of spot lights are do you have on the rack?
+Nicholas Orozco Those are Hella Rallye 4000s!
good video just one question what is the height between the bottom rail and top??
+Bernardo Alpizar It's about 5" but go to Gobi to find out exactly! Thanks for watching!
+Overland Bound thank U and I did enjoy the video a lot that is a really nice roof rack
Can you mount a roof top tent on the gobi ?
You can, but with the Ranger rack and lift its pretty high!
What spot lights are those exactly
Hi. Thanks for the video. I have an FJ Cruiser and they offer a stealth and regular rack: which do you have installed? I'm just wondering for height reference. Thanks.😬

+Chris Sanks yes! It's the Ranger version!
Overland Bound do they make them in aluminum.?
I dont believe so. Check out Gobi Racks
Thanks for the vid. And I wish to have a front and rear bumper as you have but unfortunately we do not have it.
where did you get the air damoer from? and can you set it up if you only have a roof rack? or did you need ths lights for that
air damper*
I need one to my jeep Cherokee latitude plus 2019.
Nice video about the rack. Do you know how much it weighs? Thx
+jan585 I'm going to guess 50 - 70lbs but I could be wildly off. Here is a link:

Oh no. Don’t give up, it’s worth the wait.

excellent thanks for sharing this info
Where did you get those sand bridges?
+John Westbrook Billet 4X4, but we are switching to MaxTrax! Better tech.

I think so!! You might need an additional cross member.

I have land rover discovery with the typical roof rack for that veichel, I wonder though if I could install those gobi inserts to my rack...
THEBLADETHROWER Yup - the sunroof section is the only removable piece, which I think is a good thing for rigidity. I think they make a rack for the Disco!
Overland Bound cool thanks! Yup they do
What type of truck u have
1996 FZJ80 Land Cruiser
2 Questions. How tall is it and can you take it through a car wash?
About 8' and nooooope - No car wash.
Anyone know if they still give the free ladder/axe mount with the rack?
I'm not sure. They usually answer the phone though!
Krynical Gaming, I went on the site yesterday and if I read correctly they have the ladder option (I'd call to see if you could get shovel/axe mount swapped) and free domestic, lower 48 shipping.
what are the cables for?
Those are called limb risers, and they do just that!
They are also called bush cables. They help prevent falling limbs from damaging your windscreen or hood.
Hello Michael!
Say me please, installed roof tent on this roof rack bad idea..? I have roof rack ARB and roof tent. Maybe uninstall rack and make platform..?
Same question
@@ericgensitskiy1230 I left the АRB mountings and installed a new platform on them.
great breakdown ! I have a Land Rover Discovery to you kind of do need a contour rack
+THEBLADETHROWER Yup. Get it!
great video!
Thanks man! I hope its informative!
The roof rack starts with the feet. If they are no good then your roof rack is no good. It sucks stopping and having to pick all your stuff that fell because the feet broke. I have been there.
Great information thanks 👍
Did Gobi sponsor your rack?
No
does it work for toyota tacoma Trucks
Check out the Gobi Racks website!
How much is this roof rack?
www.gobiracks.com/
+Overland Bound thanks
what tents work with this roof rack?
Most. I have a HiTents on it now. Because of the height of the top rail, your tent will sit a bit higher.
Earnest Thomas there is a new compaby coming up you can check it out on google it is called ikamper (www.ikamper.com) it has my eye but kind of expensive. different types of tents but so aerodynamic.
please help me do this for my jeep. it needs some love from stock! lol
+Ice Man Ha! Slowly but surely!
+Overland Bound
No one knows how to turn my Jeep Commander into a rock crawling beast :( lol
Love the rack dude
You only need them to sleep on if you have a mattress
Thanks.
Just looking out.. even thought I come off like an ass sometimes.. lol
those wire nuts are cute
great overall review
