The rated-R version of Guyver is the anime series which is full of gore, decapitations and multiple different Guyver suits with different designs, plus you get to see all the actual powers the suits have.
Sounds much more entertaining than this.

You guys have to check out the sequel Guyver:Dark Hero. It's so much less cartoony and gets a massive upgrade in the fight choreography and gore department. Plus they switched out the lead actor for Solid Snake himself ( and screen writer) David Hayter
Even my folks enjoyed Guyver: Dark Hero. And trust me that's something. :O It may not be high art but it's a lot better than this one. :D

Guyver Dark Hero is the way to go. That film has two of the three B’s and is such a great b-movie.

The Anime is pretty good, but so far I have only seen the first episode and its actually pretty awesoem so far.
I hope it doesnt get as silly as the movie but so far only the humans are sort of silly,lol

@@JasonBrant Perhaps your expectations were a little to high for a live action manga adaptation, with a budget of $3 and as much goodwill as they could scrape together. The humour falls a little flat in places, but it was supposed to be goofy and it was originally aimed at Japanese teenagers, and didnt translate well at all.

I did some research, and the pinky ring phenomenon is actually derived from the mob. Mob bosses, and made men often had Pinky Rings to signal what their status was.
Apparently Hollywood adopted that and uses that in their movies to identify the villains.

What do you expect from a director named Screaming Mad George?
He did special effects for “Big Trouble in Little China”, Predator , Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and 4 ( the cockroach scene).
And yes , it’s based on a manga called “Bio Booster Armor Guyver”.
Definitely watch the sequel. It's still SBIG quality, but much better than the first film. You can't go wrong with Solid Snake as the lead.

Why do I get the feeling that that guy has been rejected a lot of times in his life.
he did just immediately leave when he saw Mark Hamill in his love interest's apartment.
Apparently the reason for the uneven tone was because producer Brian Yuzna wanted to turn the manga into a kids film while the directors wanted to stay true to the more serious tone of the source material, but ended up having all creative control taken from them by Yuzna during the production.
Edit: They didn't even have any involvement with the so called "director's cut".

Yuzna probably thought he could turn Guyver into one by appealing to children.

Whenever they use that music sting and weird slice cut to the transition scenes, I want the voice over guy from the "Super Friends" cartoon to come on and say "Meanwhile!"
That transition was killing me.
I can't wait for them to watch the sequel. The fight scenes in the sequel are some of the best monster fight scenes I think I have ever seen.
Guys, for this era... These are some legitimate effects. I realize its not good, but what a buried gem in terms of lost budget.
The sequel ROCKS. More serious tone and played straight with some awesome HK style fight choreography.
Sequel is what you want.
The tone is serious, the gore is solid and the fight scenes are amazing.

@@JasonBrant I´m seeing you watching this movie, and not getting the main point. Didn´t finished the video yet, though... This is a kid´s movie. 100%. It does have actors from Reanimator and stuff, but it´s a kids/pre-teen movie altogether. TMNT target.

@@JasonBrant i have to say when i saw this, it was like mid 90s so i was 13/14 so basically still a kid and i loved it, watching it now, yeah its not really the best of the best, but the nostalgia factor man, cant really beat that.

I think that Screaming Mad George took his favorite moments from the anime and padded the rest of the film with comedy in an attempt to create a _Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles_ vibe, that film having come out the previous year.
While watching this, I was saying the same thing.
Trust me when I say Guyver 2 Dark Hero is everything you wanted this one to be. Dark, gritty, better fights and choreography, gore, no bad humor, simpler story, more action and better looking suits. It was and still is one of my all time favorite movies. Love what you guys do by the way. Love the channel and the laughes. Never miss a episode.
Guyver 2 dark hero is a must watch! One of my favourite movies from childhood. It is the exact movie you guys are describing when how to improve this movie. Heavy R rating too lol
The sequel stars Solid Snake himself, David Hayter. It also does away with the stupid humor, and, goes in a darker direction.

I loved this movie as a kid! When Blockbuster was still everywhere, I would rent this and a few other monster movies because the costumes were awesome back then. Yea, the comedy wouldve been better left on the editor's floor but the nostalgia factor covers that up nicely. lol
One of the best movies ever. the sequel was pure cheesy goodness but good . PLUS David Hayter stared in the sequel and also helped screen write Xmen movies

The innuendo is real in this episode. 😄 This is based on an anime which is based on a manga. Them trying to compress all of that into a movie is why they have the narration/text scrawl at the beginning (they need to pick one) and why there's so much exposition in the story telling. This movie felt like they were trying to out-Sam Rami, Sam Rami. The first movie had better effects, but the sequel was more of the single and darker tone than the first.
Having the text crawl and then having a character repeat the same thing later was an interesting choice.
The "chest laser" is called the Mega Smasher and it is his most powerful weapon, capable of gouging into a mountain in the anime
Bio-Booster Armor Guyver is the first anime I ever watched, and its still one of my favourites. Pure 80s/90s hyper-violent insanity.
But yeah, this is one of the earlier attempts to do live-action adaptations of anime, and it missed by a country mile. The sequel is definitely better in terms of effects and tone, and the final battle in it is legit fantastic.
I don't think I ever noticed before that the 'No smoking!' guy is the Mayor in Robocop 2. And just to add to what many people have mentioned, the sequel is a hell of a lot better. Pretty much exactly what you were wishing this one was in your commentary. I've got to say, though, watching this reaction kind of makes me want you guys to tackle the Swamp Thing films someday.

Guyver is indeed based on a manga, and there was also an anime adaptation. The live action films are goofy, but the manga is excellent. The anime was good at the time, I am not sure how well it held up. When it first came out in the west it was considered on the more extreme end of anime at the time in terms of on screen violence and gore.
I really cannot abide this Guyver hate, but I still love you guys, and also if you want a more serious, rated-R version of this, the sequel is exactly that (with fantastic martial arts action, too).
The guyver 2 is actually really good, and the fights well choreographed.

Guyver is awesome. Not this one though, the second one is better. But what I commend from the 2 movies is that they did a really good job with the creature designs and the Guyver suit (it's really faithful to the source material) 👍
Screaming Mad George had an affinity for bugs ...he is an amazing sfx artist
For its time, it was very innovative and cool. I was really into it when I watched it as a kid. I was like 7 or 8. It has humour suitable for the age, cool powers and gore stuff that parents probably do not want you to see. A perfect kid fun. :)

9:54: No. The film doesn’t explain it, but in the anime and manga, it’s kept in a pocket dimension when not in use. The holes in his neck are just portals to that dimension.
Edit: yeah, I knew this movie was going to be crap when I saw JJ from Good Times was going to be one of the main villains. But as most of the other comments have mentioned, the various Guyver anime (I think there’s 3) and the live-action sequel Guyver Dark Hero are friggin amazing.
yep, and when he transforms in the anime/manga a destructive sphere surrounds him as the Guyver suit appears behind him before wrapping itself around him. Which is used against him at one point in episode 7 of the 12 part anime when he's tied to his girlfriend and can't transform without killing her. Except then he finds out it's not really her but a zoanoid made to look like her. So he transforms and that sphere destroys that zoanoid.
Second one is much better love both movies and the anime

The sequel Guyver the dark hero is so awesome compared to this, and with David Hayter the voice of Solid Snake has the lead its great, mainly the final battle.
Watched this over and over as a kid, it got me into anime and manga. Lost my shit when the sequel "Guyver 2: Dark Hero" came out. Improved in every way

Apparently the director really REALLY wanted to do a faithful adaptation of Guyver, but the producer only heard 'cartoon' and pushed hard to force them to add childish comedy elements. Which is even worse considering the main group who'd want to see this film are the fans of the anime, who are used to high levels of violence, gore and human drama.
The sequel is a lot closer to what you're looking for, although for some reason the main character is played by David Hayter. That's right, Solid Snake is The Guyver in the sequel, The Guyver 2: Dark Hero. Also, you were right, this is based on an anime/manga series. I don't know much about it sadly, but I would be curious to learn more out of morbid curiosity.

This still has a special place in my teenage 90's heart, so def SBIG! And sequel def cuts out the fat and gives you more action.
And respect to the directors Screaming Mad George and Steve Wang. Both are special FX masters who's collectively worked on countless FX films we've loved from the 80's (Predator, Monster Squad, Re-Animator 2&3...), including the suits for this film, which is why they look impressive for the budget this film was given--and probably the reason Gale and Combs are both in this, since they both have worked with them prior. Also, S. Wang even comes back for the second to actually direct it. Good times!

What I love about thos channel is seeing all those films I rented on VHS in the 80s and then realising I was FAR too young to be watching most of them let alone the goretacular Italian cannibal and zombie movies I was also getting. The 80s ruled.

I think the story behind this is that Screaming Mad George was a makeup effects artist who was also a big fan of the Guyver anime, so this was kind of a passion project for him. His background in makeup effects is why the suits are too good for the rest of the movie.
It’s also worth noting that the reason Screaming Mad George could acquire such incredible budgets for, essentially, straight to video productions, is that he was the talent behind movie monsters such as The Predator; and he did FX for A Nightmare on Elmstreet 4, The Re-animator (and Re-animator 2), etc…
I know you’ll love this one. SMG was also the FX lead on Silent Night Deadly Night 5.
The man is a Hollywood legend. I agree, though, the humour was shoehorned in MUTRONICS (The Guyver). It was like they were trying to make a family-friendly movie, with some really adult gore. Like they aimed for Gremlins, and landed on Naked Lunch.
Just checked and YES it was based on an anime.

The Unit bonded with Sho, resulting a powerful fighting life form called Guyver."
There's also another film called "Guyver: Dark Hero" from 1994.

The sequel is literally everything you guys wanted in this one, and the icing on the cake is that Sean is played by the man who voices Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid games.
It is very weird this got made. It was indeed an anime, in fact it was a long series of anime, so they had to cover a lot of material in that text crawl. I had a box DVD set of the original series, and there was a lot to it. I have no idea how a Japanese comic and cartoon got made into a live action movie in the US, particularly back then. Unfortunately I think it was Screaming Mad George's idea to add the humor. The anime was generally pretty dark and brutal. With so many cultural and language barriers, and missing back story, there was no way this wasn't going to be a weird mess, but good for them to include an interracial romance at that time. Those are hard to find in 20th century artifacts.

I went to high school in NYC in the early 90s, which was a crazy time when you had the anti-*orn hysteria, and in NYC that meant they forced the adult shops to carry a majority of 'legitimate' movies. So practically overnight the city was filled with discount VHS tapes of pirated 70s kung fu, monster and anime movies often for something like 3 for $10 so even I could afford it on my allowance/babysitting earnings. I loved it, and Guyver was one of the first animes I ever saw. Of course that was one of the stupidest laws to hit the books cause now high school kids could legitimately go into adult shops ... and this teenager thought it was fantastic :) .
Mark Hamill was so unlucky with the projects he landed after Star Wars made him. He really put in good work with WC3 & WC4 and those are video games.
Fun fact to this insanity. They marketed it like Hamill was The Guyver.

I watched this movie as a child and remember it being dark and awesome but a lot more violent.
The costumes were good and obviously expensive, but like they said, just too well-lit. They look like Gremlins that are just going through puberty and Pokemon evolved in a really bad way lol. That's the best way I can describe it.

@2:00 Michael Berryman! He played Clevon in The Devil's Rejects. I forgot his name too, so I had to look him up, he has been in so many projects it kinda boggles my mind I didn't just remember his name instantly lol.
From my understanding. This movie seemed to be for 80 and 90s kids. I've never seen it, but others in their late 30s to early 40s speak highly about this movie from their childhood.
That's probably the best description for this movie I've ever read.
You guys must get around to watching the sequel, Guyver: Dark Hero. They sorted the tone out, dropped the Power Rangers bad humour and they had one stunt/special FX moment that is so cool it makes the whole film worthwhile. It's still dudes in funky rubber suits and it's still way overlit, but it's way more palatable than the first movie.
The manga and anime were definitely R-rated, it just didn't transfer well to live action with the technology of the time.
The old Guyver anime traumatized me as a child, especially the fact that there was no definitive ending.

I thought this one was super cringey, but I will say the sequel is actually great. It's not got the corny humour, the fights are a lot better and it's just a lot of fun. I actually think it's more of a cult favourite than a so bad it's good.
