    I had this on a VHS, now lost for many years, and was scared it hadn't survived I the archives.
    Fabulous to see it again, just wish they could still make programs like this.

    Wish the BBC would release this original series on DVD. Beautiful music of Jade Warrior's 'Heaven Stone' accompanying the Lake Titicaca sequence.

      Unfortunately I suspect the music rights are the main obstacle to a rerelease.

    Wonder how much of this still is the same all these decades later.

    Excellent, thank you for posting. Had forgotten about the twist at the end. I remember watching this as a teenager, and being inspired to backpack around Peru in my gap year.

    The bit at 28:00 about steam trains is permanently stuck in my mind - "they're all ham actors at heart". Probably the greatest summary of the power of steam I've ever heard.

    I live next to that railway, maybe you like some of my videos. I've been improving the quality of them through the years. now there are some other diesel models too, come of them modified here to fit in the tunnels. The second line Huancayo-Huancavelica is not a narrow gauge anymore since 2010 and sadly is not working since 2018, the government has been a terrible railroads manager, so this part was doomed a long time ago. greetings from Huancayo!

      Our railways in UK aren't well managed either. Overcrowded and nearly always delayed or cancelled for different reasons. Also they are all run by different companies so the fare system is a mess. Notice you follow Jay Foreman. You have good taste. May I also recommend Mentour Pilot!

    In his "Moreover" column Miles once wrote about this trip, not about the train or the people but about Roy, the lighting man, who the whole trip was telling him he (Roy) would be the next President of Bolivia once they got there. And of course a revolution broke out as soon as they arrived...

    If you read the book that goes with this series Miles tells how after the scene of him riding off on the bicycle he discovered that it had no brakes and he crashed! Not seriously injured.

    I came here because this BBC programme is referenced in a book by Iain Sinclair, entitled The Gold Machine. A wonderful book, BTY.

    It's fitting that the episode it titled "Three Miles High" considering the host's name is Miles!

    At least whoever owns the rights to the song "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" hasn't sued to block it's use on this video, as has the owner of two Beetles songs in the videos "Deccan" ("Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds"), and "Confessions of a Train Spotter" ("And I Love Her"). On those videos the songs are either muted or dubbed over with another song.

    • @TerryTheNewsGirl
      @TerryTheNewsGirl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And dubbed over with pretty crap tunes at that. I'd rather have the Beetles thanks.
