In 1980 I saw this on PBS as part of Great Railway Journeys of the World that very night I started my plans to make same trip. Went by myself did same route and had the best trip of my life with memories that will never fade.

Starting at 2:42 - truly memorable sequence on Lake Titicaca to the music of 'Heaven Stone' from Jade Warrior from their acclaimed album 'Way Of The Sun'.

the reason the machinery still works, is because it was built to last, and it could be repaired, people took a pride in their work, try finding any of that today

Top notch equipment is produced by every country of the world and is available everywhere. Junk equipment is produced by every country and available everywhere too. The good stuff tends to be priced higher than ALMOST anybody is willing to pay, people (you and I) are notoriously cheap, often to the point of stupidity. Therefore, the world is full of junk equipment and just as full of people complaining about their $60.00 widget (made in China) being useless and not lasting whilst the purchaser of the similar tool that cost $300.00 (made in China too) is making good money cause their factory runs efficiently.

This is almost exactly the same route I took on my first trip to Peru. I wanted to go by train, but the train from Lima to Huancayo only runs once/week now, so I decided to go by bus. Also, I was told that theft was rampant on the train from Cusco to Puno, because it's used by tourists more than by locals, so I again chose the bus there. And, as mentioned, the train goes from Huancayo to Huancavelica, not Ayacucho, and I decided to go to Ayacucho. Still, it's a route that I was told is fairly uncommon for tourists, and took me over two weeks to travel, as many of the roads are still dirt roads, and the journey between any two cities on this route is between 8 and 20 hours.
