This is certainly one of the best. They make it sound really pretty. I had previously not exactly thought of this as a pretty song. Obviously related storywise to "Johnny, We Hardly Knew Ye." Pretty tune, slightly creepy story. Like a lot of war songs are of course. Or anti-war really. ("For I'd rather have my Teddy as he used to be Than the King of France and his whole navy.")
The accompaniment is very nice too. Words and music together are beautiful but the point of the song comes through loud and clear too at the same time. Wow. Very, very good. ^___^
My dad played a version of this called Biddy McGrath here in Newfoundland, all of her body parts were detachable. Not sure where it came from n that from. Great song *Edit, of course its Carlton Showband, Duh*
Fun fact: the young gentleman on the left playing the bodhran is Pete Seeger's grandson, Tao Rodriguez-Seeger.
yep he playing the Bodhrán was a pleasant surprise.
Its a pleasure to see legends sing together..
the song writtten from a mothers viewpoint in a peripheral matter of fact way ,which makes the writing so potent
Thanks now I can’t get this tune out of my head.
Up the Irish great song and great words
Fabulous version. Clear words which make the history and point of the song clear. This and the burl version are the best.

They don't "Makem" like they used to . . . . :)
What a wonderful piece. Have never seen Pete and Tommy together before.
There is a recording on Vanguard of them playing with Eric Weisberg at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival. Tommy sings Whistling Gypsy.
Great song beautifully sung

As a McGrath man myself, I can safely relate to you that I have kept both my legs
I love to sing this song! Lots of fun.
One of the best anti-war songs sung perfectly. Burl Ives also sang it well.
Wouldn't it be fun if pete seeger
Ended up being your grandpa
this is a great version but it is very sad that two of these singers have past on pete seeger and brad of armagh tommy makem
If you want a different version of this, then go find My Son John. The Imagined Village do a great, and updated version of that...
Tommy looks just like my grandpa in this video
Great!!! I loved it
I'm a McGrath & it's nice to hear the name pronounced properly....whereas Bruce Springsteen's version doesn't....ok!..bit pedantic...but!
Who gives a damn grandson or not, what a lovely rendition of a great song ........ Dominic
The opposite equation of war from the people that make money off it!
Johnny I hardly knew ya is very similar in matter of factness - so low in flesh, so high in bone.. indeed yer dancing days are done
Imperialism, taking children's legs for hundreds of years
