Why Indonesia turns to private investors to find billions for its new capital Nusantara | DW News

  • Indonesia is building a new capital on the island of Borneo. Called Nusantara, it is expected to be fully ready by 2045, but the plan is to have some government institutions move to it from early next year.
President Joko Widodo has been a major backer of the project and just last month, was in Singapore to encourage private investors to foot a majority of the 32 billion dollar price tag.

Indonesia is also frequently labelled as an "overpopulated nation", but in truth it isn't, it has the largest land area in its region, its just that everyone is boxed up in Java. So the move for a new capital also hopes to improve population spread.

I agree. Indonesia definitely has a big internal brain drain problem where people mostly move to the Java island to get better work and/or education because that's where they're all located. And even within Java island, the big companies are heavily located in Jakarta. I know that happens with most big countries, but because Indonesia is made up of thousands islands with big population, this "internal brain drain" is causing a seeming overpopulation problem

There is a program called transmigration from a long time ago, and it has helped a bit. But still, the development of economy isn't going well in those transmigration areas so, java still become the center of population.
New capital is a good idea, but first, it shouldn't force indonesia to fund majority of it from debt, and the preliminary study must be re analyzed over and over ,it's a major task that can not be analyzed overnight, can be 10 years to make sufficient judgement. Also,it should be tightly watched by Economy watch official state organization, the BPK.

Indonesia's priority is to eradicate poverty, not build a new capital! Majority of the Indonesian can not even have a good meal in their table because they do not have work. If they do have work, cost of living is getting more expensive. A quarter of the Indonesian under the age of five experience malnutrition. Even many Indonesian have to go abroad only to become domestic workers and a lot of them get cheated by people involved in human trafficking (a lot of them lose their lives or coming home with only one kidney!). My opinion as a citizen of an independent nation is that Indonesia needs equal development, not a new central development. Moving capital to more central part is to move the money flow. The more big city create, the more investment come. Borneo is too big,it has the biggest potential but it also need the biggest stimulate to fasten the developement,it is same with papua. Many kalimantan people want new provinces and cities, also the capital city, they know it could improve their life.

    • @needmorequarts1081
      @needmorequarts1081 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@muhammadhanif4113 I think that's just a bonus or side effects while the main reason why the capital is moving is because Jakarta is sinking because of the rise of global sea level and strategic planning if Indonesia ever being attacked by Australia or china, moving the capital to Borneo would make them think twice of bombing the capital city to rubbles and harms Borneo's jungle which will choke the world if it ever damaged or burned from war, thus we have an advantage from ever being attacked if war broke out in the Pacific.

And it may be the biggest ChinaTown in the world, because the people who are able to buy the land and house price there mostly are Chinese descendants and foreigners. The Capital City of Indonesia is moving for the sake of equitable development across Indonesia.. not just because of Jakarta is sinking, so please don't bring this up as the main issue. Jakarta is too full of people and traffic is too high, it's no longer efficient to travel across Jakarta these days. Jakarta was not prepared to handle this huge amount of government and business activities in the same time. So the government build the IKN project, the government and central business city will be separated. Just like Washington DC and NYC for example..

Interview local people in Borneo, and you know how controlling they are on the local people's life. Nusantara is both symbolic and of substantial significance:
    1. Symbolic because it is a way of Mr. President Joko Widodo of Indonesia (of which he himself is an ethnic Javanese) telling rebellious uprisings in certain areas of Indonesia that the true meaning of Indonesia is Indonesia, not "the Javanese Empire". Mr. President Joko Widodo is literally a nationalist.
    2. Of substantial significance because Mr. President Joko Widodo of Indonesia wants to jump start the national economy by bringing more closely together the Western part of Indonesia with the Eastern part of Indonesia on common ground.
    3. Jakarta is sinking and Jakarta cannot sustain any more load.
    4. Jakarta is located on the island of Java and the island of Java is primarily known as rice food stock of the entire nation.
    5. Nusantara is meant to be the democratization of Indonesia. Because it is located on common ground, then Westerners of Indonesia and Easterners of Indonesia can easily bond with each other in good faith.

As an Indonesian who is concerned with the deforestation we are facing in Kalimantan, why do we need to build a new Capital city in the middle of the forest destroying the natural ecosystem there? Surely we can convert or move the capitol to one of the many existing cities in Indonesia such as Surabaya / Pontianak to become our new Capitol City? This way we won't need to spend huge amounts of money, destroy the forest, and still be safe from sinking. Many of the jungles of Kalimantan is on peatland soil, which is not ideal for building, and is the reserve for ground water. This project may result in the desertification of Kalimantan.

If Jakarta is too crowded and congested improve the city with a better planning, do not neglect it. The city needs more infrastructures that the government has not build for decades (where are those new roads, parks, public housing?).
Indonesia's priority is to eradicate poverty, not build a new capital! Majority of the Indonesian can not even have a good meal in their table because they do not have work. If they do have work, cost of living is getting more expensive. Create more works! A quarter of the Indonesian under the age of five experience malnutrition. Even many Indonesian have to go abroad only to become domestic workers and a lot of them get cheated by people involved in human trafficking (a lot of them ended up losing their lives or coming home with only one kidney!). CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT!
