Here is my reaction to the original song 🎸th-cam.com/video/wPsyNO4A6p0/w-d-xo.html And here is my previous Home Free reaction 🏠🍟th-cam.com/video/Ez-Fc1j_804/w-d-xo.html
There is a group called Club For Five that did this arrangement some 12-15 years ago. Home Free must have gotten it from them since they first recorded it in 2021. If you get a chance, you should listen to them. I think HF does a masterful job on this one.
An impressive interpretation of Home Free. Tim and Chance are fantastic. I love the guys' perfect harmonies, always on point. Every time I hear the song I get goosebumps. Thanks for your great reaction!
This is a HomeFree masterpiece for me. I heard a quote once that said " old age makes sons bury their fathers, but wars make Father's bury their sons." 😔 😟
I think there is an element of irony that war, the horrific conflict between nations, forges some of the deepest and most powerful relationships between men. When your life literally hangs in the balance and you have no choice but to rely on your fellow comrades, honor, respect, and commitment take on deeper meanings that everyday people cannot fully appreciate because they have not lived it. Out of the fire, brothers in arms, indeed.
I find I was holding my breath between listening to home free and watching you. It was like the best of both worlds. I love your reviews and I love Home Free
The humming, oohs, and aahs in this song always make me think of an organ with different stops selected, not just Tim’s movements as bass. Especially the final two chords which remind me of an “amen” at the end of a hymn.
🇺🇲🇬🇧 ..., Thank you Sir Hairless! I have been waiting for this reaction for some time. I am extremely grateful that you reacted to the original by Dire Straits first. It happens to be one of my very favorite songs. I got goosebumps, much like you, my first time hearing this masterful Home Free cover. They lasted throughout the entire song and beyond. I think Chance made me feel a whole lot of emotions along with Tim. It is a cover that will always be important to me. Thank you so much for taking the time to enjoy it. I am hoping for another similar situation from you. It is another Home Free masterpiece. The original , which I truly hope you react to , is "Go Rest High Upon That Mountain" by Vince Gill. It is legendary in the Country Music community, and then Home Free just took to another stratosphere!!!! ..... 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚🇬🇧🇺🇲
The arrangement was done by Club for Five. They are a mixed group so their version sounds different. You can find it here on YT Tim asked them and the bass Tuukka just send him the arrangement
I’ve heard Club For Five’s version of this song years ago, many times, and HF’s version is so similiar that in my brain I hear theirs while I listen to this. Yeah, greetings from Finland🇫🇮
I was going to suggest the Club for Five one, too. It's quite interesting how the same arrangement can sound so different depending on the voices used.
It's one of their masterpieces, as far as I am concerned, and I call it hauntingly beautiful. It still gives me chills, occasionally, and I've listened to it many, many times. I believe in the early days (with Chris Rupp) they oftentimes double tracked Tim if he was doing something else than bass, too. These days, with Chance, it could go either way with him double tracking or Chance taking over the bass. If they double-track anyway it's still mostly Tim doing the bass, I believe. Home Free is very supportive towards veterans and against discrimination, and they have several songs that mirror their opinions, like Travelin' Soldier, Don't Laugh At Me or Everybody' Walkin' This Land for example. Thanks for the reaction and analysis. I enjoyed it very much, as ususal.
Glad you checked out the original first. I have always been a fan of this song by Dire Straits but think Home Free did an excellent version of this song. Tim's natural breathy bass was awesome along with Chance's smooth baritone & loved it when all the guys were doing 5 part harmonies. Who would believe humming could sound so good. They gave it a very solemn feeling. I love that they don't overproduce their songs. These guys are my favorite a cappella group out there.
The black flag under the American flag in the opening shots is a POW/MIA (Prisoner of War or Missing in Action) flag ... in memoriam of the fallen who never returned home. It adds an additional layer of poingance to the entire song.
Their most hauntingly beautiful song, in my opinion. Thanks for the Home Free reactions. ( they did usually pu Tim's base on the recordings. But, now they have Chance.
One of HF's masterpieces, and a favorite. But, credit must also be given to Club For Five for an outstanding arrangement. It blows my mind how they took a guitar-heavy song and adapted it to a capella. Tim only added the echoes/ reverb to the arrangement (an excellent addition). Yes, I recommend listening to Club For Five's version. HF released this song a week or two before Veterans Day/ Remembrance Day a few years ago in honor of vets.
Thank you for the reaction to the original, truly a sober & tragic song about wars’ waste. This HF cover recreates the emotional impact of its inspiration with the bonus of Tim Foust and his brothers in song. Both are incredibly powerful. Thank you for this reaction.
Okay, finished. As usual, your reactions are always deep, accurate and informative. I don't often see you quite this obviously 'impacted.' I think this is my far-and-away favorite from Home Free. That's really saying something, because they are SO good all the time. Outstanding vocal performance (and visual), and outstanding reaction/analysis!
Very happy that you've got to this one, it's one of their best. The first time I heard it was an album before the video came out, and I had to stop and process before I could listen to any more. Club for Five did a great arrangement, but the sheer power Home Free could add to it makes it so special. And I love Tim the human organ - absolutely. For another example, yes, definitely look at their version of Go Rest High On That Mountain. You'll get debate on which version to watch, but my favourite is the Church Sessions on the Country Rebel channel, just the five of them singing it live.
I adore this cover by Home Free. It hits in so many good ways. I have so many family members who fought for my country, and this song is so beautiful for it. It makes me feel like everyone who dedicated themselves to the cause matters, and that is what this song is truly about (at least in my humble opinion). And as always, I enjoy your analysis - it teaches me more about music, and helps me understand why I love what I do.
Both this version, and the original bring chills and tears. In the original, it is the guitar and Mark Knopfler’s whisper. In this one, those human-made organ sounds. ❤️🎶
I'm so glad we didn't have to wait for you to do this cover. I think Home Free is amazing, but this may be their best. I never fail to get goosebumps when I hear this, and those last two chords are haunting. Thank you so much!
I love how your commentary is technical, without being too technical, and stepping over the line into boring. Very well done commentary on Homes Frees superb version of this hauntingly beautiful song.
I heard your other reaction to this song and I really hoped that you would review this version by Homefree. I think their version is so powerful and the first time I heard it brought tears to my eyes.
This is one of my favorite vocal performances ever, just the raw, all encompassing harmonic power of it. I was left utterly speechless the first (and second) time I heard it, so I’m impressed by how eloquently you were able to speak about it on your own first listen.
1:42 beautiful run 2:04 Wow, that is gorgeous harmony. This seems so much more moving to me than the original - which is beautiful but different way. I just prefer this style - ❤R/A🎼
Before the video started, having heard the HF version, I knew that you would be taken aback. The arrangement is intense and holds the feeling the song is meant to bring. 🌹
I get tears every single time I hear this. My dad was at Utah Beach as a medic in WWII. Something he never, ever, spoke of. This really hits you in the feels! So beautiful; even better than the original, IMHO.
That little smiling Tim head moving over the organ pedals killed me! Bwahahahahaha! A much needed moment of levity in such a solemn and haunting song. The chord progressions in this arrangement are stunning and I bawl like a baby every time I listen to it, especially when combined with the imagery. Fantastic R&A as always!
I keep saying this (with Helplessly Hoping) is a masterclass in "simple != boring" and you highlighted the reasons why. Thank you for doing it this way. I hope it was good academic fun for you - along with the punch to the neck in the feels, of course. I thought it was interesting that the original was more disjointed in the verses while HF took that feeling to the bridge. But those organ tones + simple backing + unadorned solos get me in the heart every time, even during an analysis like this. Brothers in arms indeed. Thank you for your time. I'm so glad this won
Dire Straits timeless video of "Brothers in Arms" should be preserved in a universal time capsule. Home Free bookends this with a gentle solemn salute in quiet acapella harmony. Their echo-effect is like a rock skipping across a calm lake. A reminder perhaps of the far-reach of war over many generations. If not for your channel I would have never heard the beautiful harmonies by the Home Free men. I hope Dire Straits and Home Free both see your astute, thoughtful analysis of this important song. I have my poppy at-the-ready for November 11th. 🍁
A very powerful and hauntingly beautiful cover by Home Free! When I first heard the song (before its release, I had a pre-order digital download), my heart felt like it sunk into my stomach when Tim first started singing in the beginning. I was totally taken aback, but in a really good way! Their recording is very powerful in their delivery and the simplistic style is anything but simple. Love your analysis! I am so happy you finally reacted to it.I like Dire Straits, but was not familiar with this song. I’ll go check out your video of the Dire Straits Original. This was Chance’s idea to record this one being he’s a very big fan of Mark Knopfler.
Sir thank you for your reaction to this song. I don’t know how you made it through it without crying. 😭 I cried so hard but it was so………. I just can’t describe it! 😢 thank you 🙏 again. ❤this song was my introduction to #Homefree. The best harmonies ever.
Wow, this is a great one. So beautiful and really gets the message across. Tims low rumbling notes vibrates right through my body, I love it when music evokes physical reactions like that, alongside the emotion it brings. Thanks for a great and in depth analysis!
Brother's In Arms is ghostly haunting by Home Free. Tim and Chance did a beautiful job on this song and the harmonies are beautiful to. Thank you SirHairless for your reactions on this song and Home Free.❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hel-lo-lo Tim! 🤭 But yes - amazing song ! Unlike you, I know the original very well but had never heard this HF version! Excellent rendition!! ❤So moving, so sad - makes you pause! Thank you Sir H - incredible reaction and analysis! 🙏💫💙
Love it. As you said it’s all about the harmonies. Stunning really. Also love the echoes. Loved both Tim and Chance’s voices and yes they looked ghost like in this. Just so simple yet powerful. Good one SH!!!
I love that you include Adam as a vocalist. He does have a beautiful voice, and he did stand out in How Great Thou Art. This song never ceases to bring an awe, and a humbleness, to my heart. I love all the juicy notes and harmonies of Home Free. Thank you for the comparisons to the original song and how they are able to interpret the instrumental parts of the song. This coincided with a simulation we did today in our kids’ worship area for an active shooter. Very solemn. 🎶 Cyd
Thank you so much for your in-depth analysis of this song! It is one of my favorites of Home Free. I recently lost my Uncle and Step Dad, both Viet Nam vets. This song touches my heart. You did a wonderful job. I really do enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work! Peace from Kentucky
100% agree of silences being a strong weapon within a song. As a Dimash fan, I've learnt by myself to be ready for big fireworks. There's no big deal when Dimash goes silent, but ... heck: when the musicians go silent also, we have to get ready for something huge ( Love is like a dream, Hello, Ave Maria, ... ) Congrats for your analysis. Please keep up such an excellent work !
What a nice and clever thing to react to an original song before a cover if you're not familiar ,with it ! Great great analysis Sir, this cover from Home Free, with these "silences" and nearly "organ likes" parts is really moving and always left me reflective and in awe. Thx from France and keep them coming 😁😁💖💖
Thank you! I always make sure to listen to the originals, but I was a little embarrassed to not know this very famous song So thought why not chuck my first time hearing it on the internet ahead of this Home Free reaction
Thanks for reacting! Such a moving song. Please do a third reaction to this song😂 sung by the Finnish a cappella group Club For Five. HF used their arrangement, but they have female singers, so the sound is fifferent. (Or at least listen to it on your own)
I appreciate your reactions always. This was an interesting sombre version of this song. In contrast, Joan Baez also did a stunning cover of this song with her clear high tones, though I've not seen a music video version of hers on this.
I really expected this reaction from you, and I wasn't disappointed! We think and feel very similarly about songs. Whether it's Dimash, Pentatonix or Home Free. This song is one of the most emotional from them. I've listened to it many times. I like the original too, but they were able to add something extra while preserving the essence of what the song says. I'm looking forward to your other reactions to Home Free, which we talked about last time. Thank you very much for your work! Greetings: Andrea 😊
Heart-breaking lyrics are delivered through stunning solo performances and masterful harmonies set in an eerily beautiful backdrop --this is a true work of art. Thank you for your analysis to help me better understand how they achieve it. I'm learning much from your "classroom".
Love the way HF did this cover. The crisp vocals are moving. I found it to suit song very well. But then, I’ve not heard a version that I don’t stop what I’m doing and listen
This arrangement was done by a Finnish a cappella group called Club For Five. My fellow Finns did an outstanding job on it and I believe Tim is friends with his fellow bass from that group :)
I paused during Tim's opening lead (just after you mentioned your goosebumps) ... As many times as I've listened to the "official" and reactors versions, I always have tears in my eyes at this point. I often end up openly weeping as the song progresses. I'll add another comment afterwards.
I always wonder how is that so many people doesn't know this song- it has been used in so many movies and tv shows... every time the main character dies, or there is a funeral or a "brotherhood moment"- here comes "Brothers in Arms". Or maybe it's just me watching too many action movies ;)
I knew you would appreciate this one. I was waiting for the chills moment and you did not disappoint. Thank you for the deep dive into this song. I watched your reaction/analysis of the original first and then this one and it gave me a new understanding and appreciation for Mark Knopfler’s way of singing it. Much love from Copenhagen 🇩🇰
Home Free always pays appropriate respect in their covers--especially to the content! Their talent is amazing--and I LOVE their 5-part harmony❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️ Such a genius touch to show the silhouette of the fellas in front of the window. I know some see it as a "ghost"y reference but it strikes me as a reflection of the POW/MIA flag. We'll never know just how many of those met the same fate as the soldier of this song. 😥 #HomeFree #AdamRuppSinging
I love their rendition of this song. Tim & Chance's leads are perfect and the harmonies are fantastic. BTW, Tim & other musicians/singers do fund raising for at-risk veterans (some excerpts are available on his & Austin's channels). Thanks for playing this, your insights & analysis.
It is so amazing to take a song already so moving and give it even deeper meaning by your analysis. You really brought it to an intellectual level that is so satisfying. ❤
I grew up on Dire Straits, now dating myself, but I think Home Free made this song more emotional. It really grips me more than the Dire Straits version. I still love the Dire Straits version. Don’t get me wrong, but this version, it grabs me.
Chris has a tendency to talk about Home Free as it existed when he was a part of it, forgetting the significant change that was adding Adam Chance to the group. Chris's statement about putting Tim on the bass in studio recordings was true when Chris was the baritone, because he's actually a tenor. But Chance is a bassy baritone, unlike Chris, so Chance does take the bass when Tim is singing lead or a tenor harmony. Chance has a 4+ octave range, which is impressive till you put him up against 5+ octave Tim! He's not quite as high and not quite as low, but certainly adequate to any but the most profound bass notes, baritone, or lower tenor part needed.
In reference to Chris Rupt's comments on Tim layering the bass line when he is singing the melody...that was standard when he was there. In live performances, Chris would cover it. He had the range but not the pure bass quality. Once Chance came in with a very good bass range, he did more, if not most of the non-Tim bass lines.
Great reaction, SH! I actually heard this cover well before listening to the original. The guitar in the original is stunning, but I must admit that Home Free did an amazing cover! I prefer it.
Sir Hairless, Your reactions are awesome and very appreciated, well done Sir!!! 💯 Home Free treated this presentation with a high degree of respect, it was very sobering and intentionally dwelling on those who have given all. Also, pointing out the desire for PEACE not war as those fighting are put into harm’s way by those who are making the decisions that take the lives others. Their video was well done, simple but very purposeful in the reflection of those who gave all and reflecting on those still serving. Thank You Home Free!!! ❣
I always liked the Dire Straits version, but I only got really interested in this song through Home Free. (Although I have to be honest I think Dire Straits guitar playing is phenomenal) Yes, this version of Home Free will send shivers through your entire body! This is so emotional. Beautifully sung by Tim and Chance, but the background and harmony of Adam, Rob and Austin is also so beautiful. It looks like a choir or actually a kind of church organ sounds. And the whole setting of the video is just amazing. Simple but with so many details that makes it so profound
Home Free are masters of the dramatic pause in all of their work. Sadly, this song seems to apply to most of the years I've been alive. Still, artists try to help us understand the truth.
Scrunchy. What a marvelously descriptive word. I really liked this version of the song. Home Free always does a great job. They are, by far, my favorite acapella group. I also like the idea of, when you are doing a cover, taking a look at the original. And, I think that would be true even if you already know the original. It would help your audience get a better picture. I can add a request for that kind of thing very easily. Take a look at Pink Floyd's "High Hopes." Then, listen to the Nightwish tribute of that song from the 2005 End of an Era DVD. Two very different versions, and each very beautiful. Man, would I love to see your take on that.
This is a sad song but the way they performed it is absolutely stunning. Txfor this. Really enjoyed it. Sir H I just want to ask; did you do "Kiss from a rose" by Pentatonix and I missed it? Cannot seem to find it. Greetings from South Africa

Oh, also, Chance is a guitarist and a huge fan of Mark Knopfler. He was the one that requested they cover this song for Land of the Free.
The arrangement was done by Club for Five. They are a mixed group so their version sounds different. You can find it here on YT

Thanks for this comment. I came here to say the same thing! The Club for Five version is amazing too.

The guys images before the windows reflects the image of that flag
Home Free masterpiece! Haunting! Thank you Sir Hairless, I really enjoy your reactions! ❤
Their most hauntingly beautiful song, in my opinion. Thanks for the Home Free reactions. ( they did usually pu Tim's base on the recordings. But, now they have Chance.

The arrangement HomeFree uses here, dates from 2008, I think, and is by the Finnish accapella group Club For Five, perhaps a third video??
I adore this cover by Home Free. It hits in so many good ways. I have so many family members who fought for my country, and this song is so beautiful for it. Before the video started, having heard the HF version, I knew that you would be taken aback. The arrangement is intense and holds the feeling the song is meant to bring. 🌹
Okay, you, why did you make me laugh out loud during such a serious song?! Tim’s face on the organ pedals, lol. Great analysis as always.
Haha I didn't want things to get too sorrowful
Me too! My husband came to see what I was laughing at...it struck me as sooo funny! 😂 Really enjoyed the reaction too!🎉

I think this is their best song. I really love this version.
Hauntingly beautiful yet sends a powerful message. They remind me of a pipe organ at the climax. Great analysis as usual.
Their 5 part harmony is magical!
This was a great reaction. Wow, Home Free did a fantastic job with this. Very emotional for me
Wow, two great versions of this song. You did a great job on the r/a of each one. I wouldn't mind seeing more videos of the original/cover. Thank you!

I'm still eagerly awaiting your reaction to Austin and Rob's operatic performance, of Nassum Dorma! Thanks again for sharing your musical knowledge!
Hel-lo-lo Tim! 🤭 But yes - amazing song ! Unlike you, I know the original very well but had never heard this HF version! Excellent rendition!! ❤So moving, so sad - makes you pause! Thank you Sir H - incredible reaction and analysis! 🙏💫💙
🙏🙏🙏
“All about the harmonies” Indeed!
❤
I was hoping you would do this song. It is one of my favorites.
❤️🤠#HomeFree. Beautiful and emotional. Wonderful reaction.🏠🍟
100% agree of silences being a strong weapon within a song.
As a Dimash fan, I've learnt by myself to be ready for big fireworks.
There's no big deal when Dimash goes silent, but ... heck: when the musicians go silent also, we have to get ready for something huge ( Love is like a dream, Hello, Ave Maria, ... )
Congrats for your analysis. Please keep up such an excellent work !
This is such a hauntingly beautiful version of this song. Thank you for your analysis 😊
(Or at least listen to it on your own)
This version is giving me goosebumps
This is just hauntingly beautiful!
Yes, i get goosebumps every time as well.
Thank you for another great reaction/analysis to this #HomeFree master class of harmonics! They never disappoint.
Great break down of this piece.
Their talent is amazing--and I LOVE their 5-part harmony❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️
Such a genius touch to show the silhouette of the fellas in front of the window. I know some see it as a "ghost"y reference but it strikes me as a reflection of the POW/MIA flag. We'll never know just how many of those met the same fate as the soldier of this song. 😥
#HomeFree #AdamRuppSinging
As always Sir, a fine analysis and reaction to one of my top HF faves.
As always thoroughly enjoyed your analysis. Thank you for what you do as it helps me to understand music better.
Home Free used the version by the Finnish a capella group Club for Five.
Thanks, a really moving track
I love their rendition of this song. Tim & Chance's leads are perfect and the harmonies are fantastic. BTW, Tim & other musicians/singers do fund raising for at-risk veterans (some excerpts are available on his & Austin's channels). Thanks for playing this, your insights & analysis.
The last two chords remind me of "amen" in a hymn.
I just found your channel. I like not only how you react, but also that you teach us.
This remains the most haunting voice-only piece I've heard. #Transcendent
"We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms" *indeed*
YES! I am SO looking forward to seeing this one :)
I loved loved loved your reaction to this one. And I love their version too :)
Thank you!
Thanks! I think I also prefer it, but will need to listen to both versions some more
Sir Hairless, Your reactions are awesome and very appreciated, well done Sir!!! 💯
Home Free treated this presentation with a high degree of respect, it was very sobering and intentionally dwelling on those who have given all. Also, pointing out the desire for PEACE not war as those fighting are put into harm’s way by those who are making the decisions that take the lives others. Their video was well done, simple but very purposeful in the reflection of those who gave all and reflecting on those still serving. Thank You Home Free!!! ❣
This song never fails to impress me! Thanks for your critique.
HF masterpiece for sure!!
I always liked the Dire Straits version, but I only got really interested in this song through Home Free. (Although I have to be honest I think Dire Straits guitar playing is phenomenal)
Yes, this version of Home Free will send shivers through your entire body!
I've been waiting a long time for you to do this one. Hauntingly beautiful. You don't miss the guitar riffs at all, they make so much sound together.
Home Free are masters of the dramatic pause in all of their work. Sadly, this song seems to apply to most of the years I've been alive. Still, artists try to help us understand the truth.
WOW!!!
Thanks Daleen!
I've not done it yet, but there's a good chance I'll be doing it this year as part of my Christmas calendar 🎄
