- The shanty version of the Maiden Voyage composed by Robin Beanland.
I wanted to try something ambitious for the 10th video, so I returned to Sea of Thieves since people seemed to really love Grogg Mayles. Took quite a long time with this one, lots of struggles, but I'm really proud with how it turned out!

I'm thinking about buying one of these to play alongside my flute in the future. Is there any yearly maintenance that needs to be done on it or repair overhauls after a certain amount of time owning it. I read on the website where you bought yours many repairs can be done by yourself at home, but I was wondering if you can get repairs done by a certified concertina tech when and if it need to be repaired.
There's not exactly any "yearly maintenance" to worry about, however if something were to happen, trying to pay a repairman could be quite costly since they're quite rare. Thankfully, working with a Concertina is not too terribly hard, and a lot of small fixes can be done just by searching for "Concertina Repair" videos. I'm a big fan of "Easy Concertina Repair - Fix That Note" with Simon Thoumire, since he does a wonderful job showing what all the parts do and explains everything in an easy way.
Because it is a wood instrument, it needs to be taken care of properly to prevent problems. Things like keeping it stored in temperature control (cold can cause condensation on reeds leading to rust, heat can cause glue to get soft or warping with time), keeping it stored in a case to help the bellow compression & prevent dust from getting in the components, etc. Pretty much anything you'd find in a "taking care of an accordion" video mostly applies to a Concertina since they use similar components.

I see the score is in key of D. I was thinking of getting a Phoenix in G/C, but lately have been thinking a G/D would be better. Most Irish music is in G with next lower in C or D and a few in F. What would you advise?
I'm honestly not sure! I think most are G/C (mine included), not having C as a row could make some traditional songs tough. Could also mean G/D is a bit pricier due to rarity. Probably a personal preference thing!

It's a New Swan Anglo Concertina. Something cheap & easy to play with a similar sound is a Melodica, that probably would work better for your ideas!

I commented on your groggy mayles video I think in the past and both of these videos inspired me to get a concertina of my own. I got a 30 button anglo rochelle concertina and I've been learning to play and I've been trying to listen to this video and watch your fingers to figure out what notes you're playing and I was wondering if you ever wrote down the notes for this arrangement because trying to figure it out from this video is kind of hard lol.

So I have plans in the works to try and make some "How to Play" videos with sheet music since a lot of people have asked (similar to the "Daddy Long Les" style). I've been trying to learn and improve with MuseScore, and am hoping to start with "Grogg Mayles" since it's the most requested (and much simpler). Depending on how it goes, I'd love to write up music for this song too! Can't really give any dates on when it might come out since I've never really done anything like it before, but I'll try my best with it!

Have you considered giving tutorials on these shanties?
So... I've been hesitant since my music theory isn't very good (I struggle to write sheet music) and I've never had a proper Concertina teacher so I worry I might pass along bad techniques or incorrect info... However, since I know there really isn't as many good Concertina resources out there as other instruments, it could be nice trying to help people and inspire others to play.
I'd probably start with a much easier one like Grogg Mayles, see how well it actually helps people. I'll give it some serious thought! If I do it'd probably take a month or so.

I had a very tough time with the Anglo Concertina at first since each button has 2 different notes, was very frustrating and felt like I couldn't do anything myself. After a month or two practice with lesson books, it started to really click

Well... To be honest, I mainly play by ear and am not the best with music theory / writing. I could try looking into it since I really should get better at making sheet music, but it'd probably take a while to deliver

Unfortunately this is the only concertina I've played, so I'm not the best source. McNeela does sell cheaper concertinas, but I've heard they aren't the most reliable compared to their more expensive ones... There's a store called Smythe's Accordion Center which sells great refurbished concertinas for much cheaper than new, looked like they had a couple 30 button anglos for ~430$

Would one be able to play this with a 20 button comcertina?
Unfortunately, probably not. This song would have to be heavily modified to work on a 20. Because of all the sharps & the swaps between major and minor, even the melody alone wouldn't be playable in this key signature. I don't personally own a 20 so I'm not certain what all would need to be done to help make it work.
Overall, some of the other, simpler Sea of Thieves shanties would be much easier to adapt for a 20.
