This was the time when not all cars looked the same. There were many UK drivers who owned them and loved them. They defended the cars against those who laughed at them for not being like other cars. One owner always reminded me that on a cold British winter morning, he would trust his Skoda to start above any other car. Edit. This car looked fantastic to me. And the one we called the Estelle as well. I would get one tomorrow if I could for the memories. Left hand drive or right hand drive, it doesn't matter. Unfortunately, there are only a very small number left in the UK. Like most cars of its time, it almost doesn't exist here anymore.
I had one in the same colour (although 136 rather than a 130) It remains one of the most enjoyable cars I've had. Fantastic handling, super reliable and just enough power. If VW really wants to impress they should allow Skoda to make a limited run 'drivers' car showing their true heritage.

I don't think it's fair to say VW killed the legacy; their money has put Skoda back on top again. Sure they might not be quite as cheap as they were though my current Octavia is around a year's wages compared to just over a year's for my old Favorit or Estelle 2, but they have come on leaps and bounds are are arguably better than the VW platforms they are built on. Certainly that's been said of the Octavia Mk IV compared to the Golf. She should be in the Focus class but I'd compare the comfort levels to the Mondeo. I do agree the old Skodas had something special, they were different in a time when everything looked the same. And still had clever innovations back then. I loved my Estelle 2 and my Favorit; but even the Favorit started to have VW money in the company; it was why it was such a good little car and looked similar to others in its class. VW were already advising and had invested some money into Skoda.
I have the simple 120 L for 5 years and I like to drive my old Skoda. it was produced in '84. I hope I can keep it for more years. This Rapid version is even more beautiful if I would change my car I would go for the rapid version or the new superb :)
Škoda just recently put up a vision of their cars in the future. They want to stop making Fabia Estate and Rapid liftback. Instead, they want another two sizes of SUVs primarily with only FWD. They are just doomed.
The Skoda 1.3 OHV engine is a legend, it even went on in the Fabia until 2004, bored out to 1.4 litres. Such a simple little motor, good low down torque. VW bought Skoda because they wanted to know how to mass produce aluminium engines, the Skoda OHV initially having an aluminium block and then an aluminium head! My only experience of an OHV engine and I'm glad times have moved on but for simplicity of the time I bet it was good to have

Der strahlte nach 6 Jahren genau wie am ersten Tag in Weiß. Solle ich mal ein Angebot bekommen einen restaurieten zu kaufen , hol ich mir einen .
Škoda 720 mohlo být auto, tohle je jen po několikáté vylepšená tisícovka, nic víc .... (nové auto byl až Favorit, jinak pořád se jen něco vylepšovalo od šedesátých let)
I'm an American who fell in love with them when trying to find the best car made in a communist country, and based on the love of them people have in and out of the Sovietsphere I believe so. Somebody was selling one in the states though it looks like it was sold once again, though if I ever start collecting cars a Rapid is going to be in it.
Growing up in the 80s in the UK these were quite a common site and it was one of the few communist bloc cars I had a soft spot for. The only thing I heard said good about Skoda at the time was they make good rally cars. I now drive a Skoda karoq (I notice the sharp lines on the headlights seem to have been updated for the modern cars on the rear cluster)

V roce 1981 se začalo vyrábět Garde, ne Rapid. Pokud teda nebere označení Rapid pro Garde na vývoz
Vyráběl se od roku 1984, předtím to bylo garde

Tak oproti 33kW stopětky a 37kW stodvacítky bylo 43kW stotřicítky vyloženě sportovní :)
Radek Hrdlicka a s lehkou úpravou jako je ostřejší vačka a lepší karburátor z toho jde vytáhnout okolo 55kw, plus je Rapid strašně lehký
@@AlejjSi asi tak nějak :D a být to 136,tak má snad i 46kW :D nebudem s ebavit o zástavbě motoru z fáva,1,4mpi z fabky apod s možnostma 50kW+ :P
