Payakan was angry because he was conflicted. He was outcast because he chose violence in the past and that was against the tulkun way of life. But when he sees the kids in trouble and the poachers it sets him off and he says 'f' it, time to hit them back harder so he initiated the battle when he jumped onto the boat.
Seeing this movie in theaters multiple times, I’m 100% okay with the production choice of not cutting more scenes due almost solely to the fact that it was so visually breathtaking in IMAX 3D (especially the underwater sequences) tbh, I could’ve watched another 2 hours of it lol
Also, side note, apparently there were already lot of scenes cut from the final version and this movie and the next are really a single coherent story that Cameron decided needed to be split into two films in order to effectively develop the new characters and build onto the new parts of the world. They actually shot all of the scenes for the next movie alongside this movie, and even shot parts of the 4th movie as well!

And I'm theorizing that Spider saved him because he didn't want to be a bad person, didn't wanna be a murderer like his "father".

Also because Jack said that spider did bond a little with him during the months of having to be with him, that he and quaritch both have soft spots for each other

18:11 This is the only reaction video I've seen where the commentator(s) actually know the true reason for why Grace's avatar looks more human than the rest of the avatar's in the program. Kudos for doing research.
It’s easy to say that a film needs to be shorter and that you can chop it up until you actually go through and attempt to do it and you see that every scene was needed. Even the scenes that wasn’t pushing plot still was accomplishing set ups.
The only reason Jake and the Navi won in the original battle over the Tree of Souls is because Eywa stepped in. The only reason the water tribe won this time is because Payakan stepped in... or jumped in. Otherwise the humans with their superior firepower wouldve totally beat the Navi.
And as Quaritch said in the original movie, nothing is over while hes still breathing. Plus, Spider was helping Quaritch become more human and more compassionate. Its like the Terminator and John Connor relationship in T2. Neytiri has treated Spider far worse. Im actually surprised Spider didnt go off on his own, independent of Neytiri or Quaritch.

I dont understand the problems with the length. I think its quite an accomplishment that Avatar: The Way of Water was so successful at 3 hours. That means it is a compelling and immersive story. That means everything else is compelling and immersive
They were probably "interrogating" Spider with intense radiation which was also giving them the map of his brain

The humans destroyed the Tree of Voices. They were trying to destroy the Tree of Souls, their central hub for Eywa. This underwater spirit tree is the water tribes central hub to Eywa
