  • What happens if You develop a revolutionary wing rig and put it on the iFLY15 ? It is incredible, must see and experience !
    Exhilarating high speed sailing, foiling above the water surface. The Foils are controlled by FlySafe ® Automatic foil control system. The system is a CEC Catamarans GmbH enhanced
    mechanism to stabalize the boat while foiling.

    I would like to see side by side testing of the different sail rigs offered by iFLY15. When the windsurf sailmakers introduced camber-induced sails I thought that was one of the best sailing innovations, stable and able to sail in gusty conditions better.

    • @iFLY-foiling
      @iFLY-foiling  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      so true. Besides higher speeds, especially in strong wind conditions, the main advantage of the wing rig is a much more stable flight attitude. The lateral flow is less disturbed than on a traditional single layer sail. This means that the iFLY Heru softwing rig is much better to use in gusty conditions or strong wind.

    That wing is so well thought out and structurally synthesized. The drive of any sailboat depends on the angle between the vector of the apparent wind and that of the direction of the boat. That beautifully " almost solid" curved, upper, leading-edge on this rig, ensures maximizing the forward-tilted, total lift vector, on that wing, to provide a higher propulsion component acting in the direction of the hull. No soft sail can really do that with the pressure zones existing close to the leading edge. Hearty congratulations, it makes a very old sailor like me want to be younger, to go and try it all out in a strong breeze. Again, well done, with such good use of modern materials to play about such that apparent wind blows always on my nose, rather than on my cheek, irrespective of the direcctions of the boat which separates it from the apparent wind.

    So its like the RAF (rotating assymetrical foil) on windsurfers in late 80s. After tacking you had to shake the sail to snap the roraring bit around

    • @iFLY-foiling
      @iFLY-foiling  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      no shaking needed. It flips even easier than battens in conventional mainsail a-cat style. Effortless.

    • @markbaa
      @markbaa 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This looks like a windsurf racing sail. With full battens and cambers and a very deep mast sleeve. Windsurfers use these kind of sails already in the 90-ties.

    • @iFLY-foiling
      @iFLY-foiling  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it is true that the technology has something in common with high speed windsurfers. The developer, Giulio Iviani from Heru Sails, is one of the leading heads in this technology. (Marco Aggravi, ITA108 sailing with Giulios rig). However the softwing rig for catamarans is a lot different and further developed. It can handle the challenge of spreaders, works with a wing profile mast, can be pushed up like a state of the art a-class decksweeper sail and enrolled when lowering sail. Stowing volume comparable to classic mainsail. Twist as well as profile depth can be adjusted. 3D volume between layers is watertight. Wing is floating t.b.c.

    • @markbaa
      @markbaa 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A rotating (wing) mast is key to efficiency.
      Remember that windsurfers *always* had a rotating mast due to the inherent mastsleeve. Later the rotating battens appeared: the full battens did not stop aft the mast but next to it, providing perfect leeward (wing-like) profile (see fingalslastpint's comment); but rotation when tacking or jibing was hard, youhad to "help" the sail rotating.
      And then appeared the camber inducers, providing much better rotating, probably just like your wing sail; unfortunately, camber sails are not for amateur surfers (mast sleeve is hollow which can contain lots of water, so water start is almost impossible).

      @@markbaa I was never an expert windsurfer but used cam sails for my bigger sizes with no problems waterstarting. They were a bit heaver though. And that didn't help things much.

    i think what u have created here is something perfect! I have been looking at all this foiling technology over the years (first got interested as a kid when I visited Alexander Graham Bell's museum in Nova Scotia) and have been waiting for this - something that can be sailed single hand, a cat, and is totally stable and not big workout, simple and easy to transport, setup and launch. I sailed a 18 ft HobieCat single handed for 8 years on Lake Ontario Canada and always dreaming of one day having foils under such a beast. I think this is it? Have you considered a jib? Where can I purchase?

      Hi angusmacsac, thank You for that wonderful feed-back. My motivation for building the iFLY15 is exactly the same. This boat was designed and built to be my personal perfect foiling beauty. And I know that many passionate sailors are thinking as You and me. So I am building the iFLY15 in large serial production to have high industrialized quality and affordable pricing for such a high tech product. By the time I convert Euro to CDN $, pay your VAT i get about $39,000 CDN for the "Ultimate" pkg. There would be additional cost of shipping it here to Canada :( Looks like I will have to wait until prices drop before I can own one. Unless you're looking for someone to sell them in Canada! - LOL

      Great but not yet perfect! Sorry .There's no way to have a smooth tack . Each time great braking and splashing in the water. The boat almost stops. There's no room under the sail to change side quickly while foiling.

    This thing here is the only acceptable future of sailing, aside from kiting! Great stuff how much does it cost compared to a regular high end composite sail over lifetime?

    • @iFLY-foiling
      @iFLY-foiling  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not say it is the only acceptable future, but to combine the advantages of a wingsail à la Americas Cup with the availability and suitability for everyday applications, this is quite attractive. You can roll it up like a conventional sail, easy to hoist and store. And another big point: it is floating, as the volume between the two layers is watertight. So no turtle. Easy righting!

  • @kurthenze2900
    @kurthenze2900 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm assuming it is the same sail area as the standard one.
    What is the increase in efficiency?
    How much more lift speed, percentage wise? Do you know?
    I fabricated a rotating mast on my Coronado 15, and I think I increased its speed by 20%.

    • @iFLYsail
      @iFLYsail 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      with same sail are we observe lower drag and higher end speed, especially in strong wind conditions. Other major advantages of the Heru wing rig : as the laminar flow of the air is less disturbed, the wing adds stability to the flight attitude. There are less turbulences. The wingsail is less beating in gusts. Last not least, I like the fact that the wing is floating. Pmtge pockets between the two layers of the rig are water tight. It is even easier to righten the boat after a capsize.

      I like it! But what percent would you guesstimate in efficiency?
      I used to race 18square's, technical improvements were welcomed. I prefer singlehanding.
      We had, what we called solid wings (not really solid) which generated more power. Took five guy's to help set up. Good in light to moderate air. Disadvantage in a blow and rough seas. Your wing looks to be the best of both worlds.
      My guesstimate would be at least 10 - 15%.
      It would be interesting to pit two in a race around a triangle course. And compare the times.
      I love this stuff!
      If your main is stalling or callapsing before your jib, then something is wrong.
      Can you adjust your mast diamonds stays and flatten your main, or outhaul? Or is it too stiff and your stuck with it. We are getting technical now, this is where I love to go. My boat was not a foiler, so I'm trying to convert. I devised a quick instant method to adjust the diamonds, which proved to be deadly in racing. Flatter when beating, fuller off the wind and when rough. I think with foiling, flatter all around with increased apparent wind speed.
      Thanks for your response!

    • @iFLYsail
      @iFLYsail 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I might estimate it a 5% gain in efficiency (in stronger wind), which is huge.

    • @iFLYsail
      @iFLYsail 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, e can flatten the sail by shifting the diamonds, the dowager rake, eveb the spreader length. This gives us plenty of options to trim the mast.

    What is the difference with a Windsurf sail?

    • @iFLY-foiling
      @iFLY-foiling  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      a lot of difference to a windsurf sail.
      mast having spreaders
      You like to push up sail like on every catamaran, not capsize the boat or flip the mast
      the volume between the skins is watertight, the wing is floating
      the softwing is designed to be hoisted on conventional wing shaped mast with track
      the spacers are flipping when tacking, creating an asymmetric profile
      it is patented technology by Heru sails

    • @iFLY-foiling
      @iFLY-foiling  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the spacers are jumping, creating an asymmetric profile. The catamaran softwing is hoisted the same way as a normal catamaran mainsail, solving issue with spreaders.

    • @team3383
      @team3383 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      its more complicated for the same result....LOL. Heru have been persueing wing sails for windsurfers for some time without success because they are too complicated. It does however seem to fit the catamaran better than a Formula windsurfer or foil. Definitely a good wing for boats based on windsurfing cambers etc.
      Pity you didn't sail a standard sail alongside the "wing" sail to see the difference (if any).

  • @andreaslossius7920
    @andreaslossius7920 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wery interesting, but is this actually a wing?

    • @iFLY-foiling
      @iFLY-foiling  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      it is a three dimensional wing, avoiding the disadvantages of a rigid wing. Can be hoisted as a normal sail. No need for a crane. Not so fragile.

  • @cornebistouille

    i'd really love to fly with her, just to brag on the phantom who sail near our hobie 16 when it come windy in Cannes :)
    any way i'll be curious to see how she does when its quite wavy (0.6/1m height, 3 to 4 meters between each wave, like we have in mediteranean sea...
