Scott I bought this guitar from you about 10 years ago. Played it tonight with the same Elixir strings that were on it when I bought it. Still sounds great even if I can't play it like you did in this video.
This model of Ibanez is my main go to axe. I've had mine since it was a puppy and it still plays better than ever. Thanks Scott, I have been trying to get as much info as possible on this, parts, and schematics are hard to find. ROCK ON!
Hey Scott! Glad to see you are doing well and making new vids in the new house. It looks Great! I have 7 of these, all from the "1984" deluxe catalog. I love them!! Take care.
I just got one of these today, I think it's the 150 version. It's missing a couple pots and knobs, a couple dings, only paid $15. I like it and will fix it up. The more videos I watch of yours the more I respect your knowledge and playing too.
I've had one for 32 years. Many times I've tried other guitars thinking to replace it. "They must be better because they cost more". I keep coming back to my old Roadster.
Nice one Scott. I got mine in the later 80's and there's a humbucker with coil tapping at the bridge end, but they're all different pick-up configurations from what I've seen. The quality is amazing for the price. A total keeper which will never be sold. Mine just needs a bit of re fretting after all the hours of play - no problem.
Just purchased one of these beauties on eBay for a very reasonable price, I'm even more stoked now after listening to this demo! Guitar sounds real nice here.... can't wait to get my filthy mitts on it
Wish i had bought tis when you decided to sell it scott. I have three diff models now and they are all amazing. Love to see you find another mint roadstar.
Hello Scott, the guitar was made in the same factory, same time and also the price was the same like the Squier JV. What build quality is it compared to the squier JV? I think you have also some JV Squiers.
@grascfretal Thank you very much my friend. Great axes that you have. I like all of the Roadstars. The necks did change after '84 as you stated. I liked the new necks and the new trems too. They simply became a different guitar overall. So, I was simply into the more Strat inspired versions and in '85, they started to go their own way with everything and start to cater to the big hair trend that was going on and leaving the old school stuff behind is all. It was Whammy City after that. lol
Got one for $40.00, needed a little help but I got her all fixed up and didn't even have to buy anything for it but new knobs, it's a badass sounding guitar, especially for what I got mine for!
I've been looking for one of these with a black finish and black pickups for awhile now, but only ones I come across either have the humbuckers or are the tremelo version which I definitely don't want. But I'm picking up my new Fender Starcaster later on today! So excited!!
@Loganator259 Yeah, the U2 is great. There's a red one currently on Ebay. It looks very sweet. I'm not a fan of red guitars at all, otherwise I would grab it up. But they really did do a fine job on it.
Thanks for letting us know about this, Scott. It looks like a great deal! Having a fixed bridge is a feature which actually means a lot to me, since I bet 90% of all serious Strat players do everything they can to lock that floating bridge down. I know Fender came out with "hard tail" Strats, but I never seem to find one. Strange, considering how many people there are out there that just want a normal bridge that stays put.
@seamonie48 I hear you. Ibanez would be doing themselves a real favor by offering them again (and doing them true to the originals, not changing them a bit). It won't happen, but it would be too sweet for sure!
I have an 1984 roadstar II, i was looking to buy something else, the guy in the guitar store asked me what i had, when i told him he said "why do you want another guitar"? i though it was no big deal, i have owned it 24 years, i bought it second hand
Where I work, a closet was cleaned out today. There was a 1983 Roadstar ii. They asked me to look at it before they "got rid of it." Anyways, I have a 1983 Roadstar ii now.
@Loganator259 Then get that amp. It's every bit as important as your axe. Possibly more, you gotta have something to plug them all into. Let me know what you end up buying.
@Loganator259 I know exactly the red on you are bidding on, I'm watching it too. I won't be bidding on it, but yes, it's that good of a guitar. Everybody should have at least one of them. You never have to leave me alone. I love to help good people out my friend. Scott
@Zuhzuhzombie You are correct my friend. The Cowboy and the Cowboy Fancy models. I thought those vine inlays were great. The Scroll is too cool. Ibanez did one of those also back in the 70's. Very cool stuff.
@groovydjs I think the Bob Weir was called the Cowboy or something? His Professional model had the vine inlays. Very beautiful. I'd like to get an Epiphone Scroll too. Reminds me very much of the Ib Prof/Musician guitars, cept a little damed up on the upper horn.
@gnrmanmatt So very true. It's amazing that 30 years later, you can still pick them up for the same price. For anybody to buy any less of a guitar and pay more money for it is insane since there are still a fair amount of these constantly floating around on Ebay. Super axes.
@seamonie48 My favorite guitar by a VERY long way is my custom made white Iceman style guitar. My favorite off the rack guitar is the very cheap Paul Reed Smith SE EG. It's discontinued (of course) and it can be purchased on Ebay for $300.00 and they will blow away all of the other guitars I own or have owned or ever will own at any price. They are just AMAZING guitars. (The stop bar tailpiece versions only).
@mazec1 My pleasure my friend. God, do I know how you feel. I'm still looking for a good har tail Strat. Why they don't just put them out there as a standard model, who the hell knows. I hate the whammy systems that Fender uses on their Strats. I get sick of those things. lol They should just put a 6 saddle Tele bridge on one of their Strats too. That would be groovy. But, they always overlook and refuse to give the public something that just makes sense.
One guy I know who's an amazing player bought one of these in the 80s, still has it, and swears by it. Humbucker, though. Wish I could try out a Musician/Professional or that Bob Weir Ibanez model from the 70s.
Hi Scott - I really enjoy your videos and have benefited from your advice. I love the Japanese-made Blazers & Roadstars. I have a mint 84 RS430 in White (Pro Rock'r Trem.), an 86 RG600TK (hardtail, 24 frets, active pups), and a mint 83 RS335 (hard rocker trem) in black. Was there a year when you would back off of the Roadstars from that year forward? I have heard the necks changed after 84, and, also, I didn't know how you felt about the ones with the more sensational trems.
@Zuhzuhzombie Yeah, these are true gems in all of their different forms, humbuckers and all. I've owned the Musician and the Bob Weir models, they are great and I wish I had them back. I'm sure I'll grab one of each again just to have. They are just becoming really hard to find, so....I guess I had better get them while I can. The prices on those 2 have gone through the roof and they were so affordable back in the late 70's and early 80's.
Great review, Scott I have the opportunity to purchase this guitar at a reasonable price. I was just wondering what kind frets do these axes come with? For some reason, my fingers don't get along well with small and medium frets.
absolutely its an awesome guitar, then of course all guitars are different, but i have a mexican fender strat and its ok, but the sound and quality of this ibanez strat is just amazing, i tried it in a rock school/camp
The difference is this era of Ibanez is pretty consistent, while Fender Japan were always cheapening the pickups and other specs to get more yield of profit while competing with other imports. I have four Japan Fenders, they all need upgrades but an Ibanez like this is much more gig-ready as you can tell.
I love Ibanez Whether its a prelawsuit, roadstar, bazer, rg( which means roadstar guitar), s, whatever, i love them, i just wish they would remake roadstars for today. but all we got is ebay. thanks for making a review.
mine has a floyd rose trem/bridge. it's so hard to maintain. I've been thinking bout swapping it out for a similar managable bridge like yours.. I can't imagine it without a term tho.. Thoughts?..
I have the original. Unless you have had one you would know what I'm talking about.. The domino affect of issues just because of the floyd rose has pretty much kept my roadster 440 on the shelf for the last decade It has a reputation of being a unique tremolo that does not stay in tune(hence the nuts at the headstock)strings break, allen key nuts get stripped and are impossible to replace.. and I find it to be one dimensional tho unique... at least my jazz master trem flexes both ways.. ugh.. eternally confused
I stiil have my Ibanez RS II NATURAL FINISH W/ Brown case and a Roland Amp for $150 that my father bought from his friend in the early 1980's . I remember calling my name I thought I was in trouble. I still remember it today walking in the living room Guitar hook up in amp I was the happiest teen when he handed it to me. It was my first real guitar not that cheap kmart I was playing then.
@spideyzx6r He's correct. There's no need to get another guitar unless you just want more guitars. But, these are actually as fine as they get. Pretty much everything made since these, have gone way down hill in quality. When they say "they don't make them like they used to", this is what they were talking about. I'd keep your guitar and play it until your final days.........because it will last that long.
They are the same except one has a whammy and the white one is a hardtail. So, for me...this white one because it stays in tune a bit better because of that.
In the old days, while in my first band, when I was caught up in the ignorance of American made, my singer had one of these covered in stickers, and I soon abandoned my Fender in favor of playing one of these Japanese Ibanez guitars. I will have one again, anytime the price is right.
I bet if SRV played one of these Ibanez RS 130 guitars you would not even be able to find one now lol sounds just as good as any Fender Strat if you ask my ears. Peace !
@guyinfuckinghat I've had a lot of request for Mark's stuff, I'm waiting on him to do one of my lessons first, then I'll cover his stuff. lol. Yeah, these were back when Ibanez made real, working man's guitars instead of just metal geared and kiddie axes.
@groovydjs Well it's a shame that I lost the bid but I will keep my eye out for another they look awesome, don't like red guitars anyway I will try to get a white or black one.
@Loganator259 I would stay FAR, FAR away from Schecter. They are generally no better than the bronze series of the B.C. Rich junk. The good Jackson's are the ones made before Fender bought them of course. The ESP 7 is very cool. I have a guy by the name of David Anderson do all of my custom guitars. Amazing builder.
@lovethegame777 I got both of mine with the original case, all 100% original parts, case in great condition and guitars in great condition too. $250.00 Each. The best deal in the world. These can't be beat at 4 time the price.
@groovydjs Not sure yet maybe another Ibanez, Or jackson if I could find a real ESP 7 that's what I'm gonna get, my friend is telling me to get a Schecter but I don't know about the Quality of them, who's making your custom?
@groovydjs Will do. I liked my friends Schecter ok, but the neck was way to thick for me atleast I like Ibanez, Jackson necks though, I want to get a custom really badly but a new amp is more important.
@groovydjs Sounds good to me, I have one question then I will leave you alone lol, are you still liking that peavey Mystic? because I'm bidding on a red one right now and I want to know if I'm making the right choice. Thanks.
The solid built comment @8:10 is referring to the heavy weight of the guitar. This guitar is built for massive sustain, have another listen and check out some notes he holds! Set this guitar up with your own favorite pickups, pots and switches and it's on, just don't throw out the original equipment!
@harisfender They are so cheap because 99% of guitar players are morons and would simply throw their money away at some goofy thing at Guitar Center with chocolate fingerprints all over the fretboards. It is really as simple as that. These and the Peavey T series guitars. These should all be going for a grand each, in a fair world anyway. But, I've turned a lot of people on to these now and they are selling their BIG BOY guitars now since they see just how superior these are to them. COOL!
Scott I bought this guitar from you about 10 years ago. Played it tonight with the same Elixir strings that were on it when I bought it. Still sounds great even if I can't play it like you did in this video.

Cheers Scott. One of these just came up locally to me I'm interested. Good to see your video came up first!
I bought a 1983 version of one of these based on your recommendation and I love it!
I just got one of these today, I think it's the 150 version. It's missing a couple pots and knobs, a couple dings, only paid $15. I like it and will fix it up. The more videos I watch of yours the more I respect your knowledge and playing too.

Awesome again! I have the one year built RG600 Roadstar. Fab guitars!
Thanks for sharing this awesome sound of this awesome guitar!

@Loganator259 Contratulations. I hope you really enjoy it.
Great video, exposition, playing - superb thanks :)

The RS430 is nearly identical... im guessing the floyd rose pro rockr bridge on the 430 is the only difference between them?
Thanks for letting us know about this, Scott. It looks like a great deal!
Having a fixed bridge is a feature which actually means a lot to me, since I bet 90% of all serious Strat players do everything they can to lock that floating bridge down.

That's a nice guitar. I have Roadstar 2 humbucker single coil. Thanks for the video
@harisfender You can get these all day long for about $200-$250. The best money you can spend for sure!
@Loganator259 Cool, what 7 string are you going to be picking up? I've got one and am having another one custom made for me right now.
@Loganator259 Then get that amp. It's every bit as important as your axe. Possibly more, you gotta have something to plug them all into. Let me know what you end up buying.
I just bought a 1985 white RS-140 "LEFTY" . . . . . sounds way better than a "Jap-Strat" ! ! . . . . LOVE IT
Awesome. They really are a hard guitar to beat. Some folks will never learn. lol
@carakenio Thanks my friend. Gotta love these little treasures.
I have the Roadstar II bass and bought it because for me it is above the Fender USA p bass. I found it was a lot smoother to play on.
@Loganator259 I know exactly the red on you are bidding on, I'm watching it too. I won't be bidding on it, but yes, it's that good of a guitar. Everybody should have at least one of them. You never have to leave me alone. I love to help good people out my friend.
Scott
Back in the late 70s and early 80s Ibanez allowed us poor people to have great guitars. Thank you Japan.
I'm with you!
Damn I'm getting old I repeated my comment 10 months later. Oh well.
@Zuhzuhzombie You are correct my friend. The Cowboy and the Cowboy Fancy models. I thought those vine inlays were great. The Scroll is too cool. Ibanez did one of those also back in the 70's. Very cool stuff.

@Loganator259 I hear you my friend. I have the same problem with red guitars. They just don't sit well with me.
Nice review, have a 83' RS135 myself, great guitar.
That's what I started my music journey on. The exact same one
Awesome stuff man! I just picked a Ibanez RGA121 on craigslist.
@seamonie48 My favorite guitar by a VERY long way is my custom made white Iceman style guitar. My favorite off the rack guitar is the very cheap Paul Reed Smith SE EG. I really enjoy your videos, you do a fun job of showing them off, rock on :)
You sure have chops! and the skills to match the cool guitar collection too
Whats the average retail price of one of these with original parts, original case, and in good condition?
One guy I know who's an amazing player bought one of these in the 80s, still has it, and swears by it. Humbucker, though. Wish I could try out a Musician/Professional or that Bob Weir Ibanez model from the 70s.

Great sounding Japanese guitar & sir you make it sound awesome !!!
hello , I have same one as you except need to find a bridge or one that would work . Ive been searching but i cant find anything. thanks in advance
Great review, Scott
I have the opportunity to purchase this guitar at a reasonable price.
I was just wondering what kind frets do these axes come with?
For some reason, my fingers don't get along well with small and medium frets.
Scott Grove can make a frying pan sound great , but yeah these are great guitars, the tone here under Scott's fingers is Sublime , Peace !
great review dude, but would you choose this one over a mexican fender strat???
absolutely its an awesome guitar, then of course all guitars are different, but i have a mexican fender strat and its ok, but the sound and quality of this ibanez strat is just amazing, i tried it in a rock school/camp
where do u buy these guitars btw
DooMixedUp I actually pick them all up from eBay.

just wondering if you have an Ibanez with the super 6 single coil pickups and if so how do you like them ? thanks :)

mine has a floyd rose trem/bridge. it's so hard to maintain. I've been thinking bout swapping it out for a similar managable bridge like yours.. I can't imagine it without a term tho.. Thoughts?..
The Floyd Rose is easily the best trem on the market. Nothing come to staying in tune like a REAL, ORIGINAL one. Not the "licensed" versions.
I have the original. Unless you have had one you would know what I'm talking about..
The domino affect of issues just because of the floyd rose has pretty much kept my roadster 440 on the shelf for the last decade

Matthew Hackett I never had a problem with any Floyd or term for that matter. Don't understand how you guys do and can't set it up right

it's not often that we get a 1984 review of a 1984 guitar.
@jixxxxer17 Thank you so very much. I love my chunks of wood and wires for sure. lol

@wisesatyr72 Yeah, I keep planting all these seeds and they keep sprouting up. lol
I have the early 1983 Tabacco burst model.
what kind you used multi effect and amp/combo?
Oh God this guitar sounds so great.
Hey , super vidéo ! Do’you prefer this roadstar or the blue one ?
They are the same except one has a whammy and the white one is a hardtail. So, for me...this white one because it stays in tune a bit better because of that.
@@groovydjs thank you so much . I m not a huge fan of the trem on stratocaster , let s go for the hardtail !
What other guitar is the neck on this similar to? Thanks
Lemme know if you ever wanna sell it, thx. It’s the Holy Grail of strats (imho) and I stupidly sold mine a decade ago
What Kind of captains does she have ?
@groovydjs i know they are good,, but why are they so cheap, and what are original pickups in them?
how much does it cost.. i have same ibanez but its 1982'
lovely hard to find one in good condition though

Sounds nice Scott 🎸🇺🇲
Thanx Scott
wish they still made guitars like this
@wendalclarke Yep, it's 100% original. I play through Johnson Millennium JM-150 amps.
I have the identical brother...mine is white 1984..
That neck came off the same line that Fender's legendary 80s stuff came off of.
The 135 has a phase switch, not coil tapping.
@guyinfuckinghat I've had a lot of request for Mark's stuff, I'm waiting on him to do one of my lessons first, then I'll cover his stuff. lol. Yeah, these were back when Ibanez made real, working man's guitars instead of just metal geared and kiddie axes.

beautiful roadstar from the 80s
Thanks. I love these things.
